Sowore’s agenda threat to national stability – NYCN

National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Kaduna State Chapter, has warned that the agenda of activist Omoyele Sowore poses a threat to national stability, urging Nigerian youths to resist attempts by what it described as ‘conflict entrepreneurs’ to lure them into disruptive protests.

The Council was reacting to reports of a planned nationwide demonstration tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow allegedly being coordinated by Sowore in connection with the U.S. Embassy’s recent security advisory.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Umar Abubakar, the NYCN said while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, any action that endangers public peace or national unity must be firmly rejected by patriotic youths.

According to the Council, the growing trend of using activism as a tool for political agitation and incitement is dangerous, warning that such actions only deepen divisions and distract the country from addressing real developmental challenges.

‘We must resist those who thrive on chaos and disunity. Nigerian youths should not be used as instruments by conflict entrepreneurs whose only goal is to destabilize the nation,’ the statement said.

The Kaduna NYCN described Sowore’s posture as reckless and unpatriotic, accusing him of exploiting the nation’s democratic space for personal and political relevance. ‘Leadership is about responsibility and nation-building, not about fueling disorder or seeking attention through disruption,’ the Council added.

The youth body further cautioned against ridiculing or discrediting national leaders under the guise of activism, insisting that constructive engagement, not confrontation, remains the most effective path to reform.

While reaffirming its commitment to peace and national cohesion, the NYCN Kaduna Chapter commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Youth Development, and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for championing youth empowerment and inclusion in governance.

It also lauded the Kaduna State Commissioner for Youth Development for consistent engagement with youth bodies across the state, describing such collaboration as key to sustaining peace and progress.

The statement urged all Nigerian youths to remain law-abiding, innovative, and focused on contributing positively to national development, emphasizing that true patriotism lies in building the nation, not tearing it apart.

Gombe State Government has announced, with deep sorrow, the demise of the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Col. Abdullahi Bello (rtd).

Sanwo-Olu and the imperative of sanitising Lagos Island

THE pivot and very womb of central Lagos is undoubtedly Lagos Island. It is the heartland of our ancestors. It is the centrality of our beginning, the core provenance that defines our cherished heritage.

It is the home of our great men and women.

It is the origin of all the Obas of Lagos, from Ado Keme, Gabaro, Akinsemoyin, Ologunkutere, Dosunmu Akam? ?kun, Oba Oyekan, to the present ?ba Akiolu.

It is here that sprang Alhaja Pelewura, Alhaja Ala?? Oke, Olaniyonu of Isaleko-Offin, Dawodu, Kosoko, Olusi, Doherty, J.K. Randle, Fashina, Olayeni, Olanrewaju, Bank Anthony, the Coles of Olowogbowo, the Williams, Taiwo Olowo, Salawu Ado-Dosunmu, Bello Fashola, Shitta Bey, Alli-?l?k?, Gbajumo, the George family of Evans Street, Agunbiade alias Baba O?a, L.J. Dosunmu, Alfa Momoh Tinubu, Dr. Maja, the Rhodes family, I.S. Adewale, Gbajabiamila, Oki, Fashina, Muritala Animashaun, Landude, Smith of Oke Arin/Alakoro, Pa Dallas of Evans Street, Herbert Macaulay, Fashanu of Isalegangan, Jinadu of the Faji enclave, Okunnu of Isaleeko, Savage, and so many other illustrious men and women of distinction who actually built Lagos and gave it the magnetic commercial allure that still remains the envy of the world.

It is the home of the famous Pelewura Market, which now lies in ruin and is a severe eyesore. It is the abode of the once prosperous Jankara Market, which presently festers as a glaring, perpetual wasteland of unrelenting misery and unceasing economic chaos amid a growing rot of decay and abandonment by successive local government leadership.

From the far fringes of Lafiaji in the east to Sandgrouse, Okepopo, Campos, Itafaji, ?nala, Ar?l?ya, Idumayingbo, Dosunmu, Idum?ta, winding across Tinubu Fountain in the west, hurrying toward the choked huddle of Balogun, the cluttered largeness of Isal?-?ffin, Oke-Arin, and the tumultuous stretches of Apongbon on the western edge of Lagos Island, our beloved and once-beautiful pride of place is gradually deteriorating into an unrecognisable, distorted landscape of lost hopes, perished dreams and shattered vision.

It is now a place of moribund lives, where septic waters run across homes, where the stench of putrid, clogged drainages hovers from living spaces into schools, into mosques, into churches and through the derelict, muddy, flooded, crumbling expanses of the streets and markets.

It is here the grim stare of poverty confronts us all, in the abject faces of unemployed youths taking refuge in drugs and illicit activities, where both young and old are resigned to lives of despair and penury, where the very harsh symbols of irredeemable destitution imperil the essentiality of existence.

This is the ugly face of our new Lagos Island. We now invite Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to embark on a physical, working tour, a determined and thorough evaluative examination, with the ultimate resolve to rehabilitate and cleanse the dirt and odium pervading our ancestral home.

We at De Renaissance Foundation, borne upon the common bond of our ?m? Eko Pataki ethos, now respectfully task the governor to visit the aforementioned neighborhoods and streets not in the screened, intimidating distance of an endless convoy of Sports Utility Vehicles, but rather in the intimate proximity and humbling embrace of the common man’s tricycle, popularly known as K?k? Marwa.

Yes. Let the governor remove himself from the elite-based promotional agenda of water sports or Formula One-style, Hollywood-themed events and subject himself to the harsh and worsening realities of our people’s lives.

We do not ask him to demolish or eviscerate our heritage, as is currently being done with the ancient Itafaji Market. We do not ask him to remove our people from their ancestral homeland. We are surely not against modernisation. But modernisation does not, and should not, entail the destruction of cherished ancestral structures and spaces.

The Vatican City is about 2,000 years old, and no one has ever suggested its replacement with modern architecture. So too with the Élysée Palace or the 300-year-old Buckingham Palace.

The megalithic temple in Turkey is about 11,000 years old and is still standing, fit and firm, preserved through strict renovation whenever necessary. No one has ever called for its modernisation. It is considered a national treasure. So too is the 7,000-year-old megalithic temple in Malta.

What we request is restoration, renovation, a cleansing that does not destroy our history. We expressed the same in our recent intervention regarding the proposed demolition of the old Randle Hospital.

Everywhere in the enlightened world, a people’s heritage is never allowed to decay. Such places are treasured, revered, respected, iconic places of pride, like Stonehenge in England (about 5,000 years old), the Colosseum in Rome (almost 2,000 years old), the Pyramid of Djoser in Egypt (about 4,600 years old), the city of Jericho on the West Bank (9,600 years old), and the ancient Tower of Pisa (about 850 years old).

We remember vividly some decades ago when there were suggestions to straighten the Leaning Tower of Pisa, to eliminate the tilt. The Italian government rejected the suggestion outright and instead engaged in renovation and structural reinforcement. Today, it still leans. That is preservation. That is the appreciation of a historic monument.

We have gone to this length to illustrate how iconic structures are often embraced as historic treasures that remind a people of the creativity and ingenuity of their ancestors. We do not disdain our past. We are proud of the attainments of our ancestors.

While we agree with Governor Sanwo-Olu that those who deliberately built on canals and drainages in Festac, Alaba, Trade Fair and other areas are scofflaws, our concern here is the preservation of our own Lagosian ancestry, against the seeming indifference of our elected government. The governor should kindly hasten this pro-people’s tour to protect our endangered ancestry. As the saying goes: a stitch in time saves nine.

We believe it is the duty and responsibility of government to protect and serve its people with diligence and passionate candour. This is the moment our own governor should stand up firmly and courageously and yield genuinely to the yearnings of our people.

Now is the time to rectify and mend the broken places. Now is the time to restore our pride of place, as anchored by our ancestors.

Guber poll : We’re repositioning Ekiti PDP to achieve success – Senator Ningi

Ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, the lawmaker representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Senator Abdul Ningi, has revealed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state is being repositioned to achieve success in the election.

Ningi, who is the Chairman of the PDP Congress Committee, spoke in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, during the inauguration of the ad hoc committee delegates ahead of the party’s governorship primaries scheduled for November 8, 2025.

The ad hoc delegates were drawn from the 177 wards across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state, with each ward having three members comprising two males and one female.

Addressing governorship aspirants, party leaders, and stakeholders at the PDP Secretariat, the PDP chieftain explained that the duties of the ad hoc delegates include overseeing and supervising the primary election process, ensuring proper documentation, and promoting transparency during the exercise.

The federal lawmaker also appealed to party members to remain steadfast and urged the four aspirants to embrace love and unity, ‘for Ekiti PDP to be able to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2026 election.’

He expressed optimism that despite the challenges, the PDP would bounce back to offer credible alternatives to the ruling APC.

According to him, ‘We want to reposition the Peoples Democratic Party, and that means we have to follow the laid-down rules and regulations so we don’t run foul of the law in any sphere.

‘Our mindset is what is good for this state. Our mindset is how do we resuscitate this very powerful party, particularly in Ekiti.

‘You are all living witnesses to what is happening to our party, but beyond what is happening, we know as a matter of fact that, whatever happens, there must be a reason behind it. The party has made mistakes in the past. We have realised our mistakes and we are coming together once more.

‘This is a Nigerian party and it is not a personalised party, and I want to say clearly that this party is beyond personalities.

‘And that is why some of us, from day one when we joined in 1998, have refused to look back because we believe this party can provide everything for everyone in Nigeria. You will recall this party provided for a minority to be the president of this country, that is, in the name of Goodluck Jonathan.

‘We are not in a position to have infighting in Nigeria, not to talk of Ekiti State. We know that with the few governors we have, we can drive this party to success. With the faces and personalities I am seeing here, I know it is something that is doable. It is something that is possible. It is your state.

‘The party has ruled the state before and you know why we missed it. You know the situation we are all in, whether you are happy or not. This is an opportunity for all of us to galvanise ourselves as a family. You should trust yourselves that you can deliver democratic dividends to your people. That is why we are here.’

The State Chairman of the party, Tunji Odeyemi, said the nomination exercise is crucial to the success of the party’s governorship primaries scheduled for November 8.

The former acting governor appealed to party members and leaders to shun acts capable of causing disunity within the PDP.

‘Like I have said before, this is a new chapter and we will reposition this party, that is our first mission and vision. The PDP in Ekiti will lay a very solid foundation that will stand the test of time. The structure will, no doubt, be strong enough and, with all things being equal, with the cooperation of all our members and the support of our national leaders, we will occupy the Government House come 2026,’ he said.

Women Affairs Minister inaugurates committee for NFWP-SU

Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, on Friday inaugurated the Federal Steering Committee of the Nigeria for Women Programme Scale-Up Project (NFWP-SU) at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, describing it as a national milestone in the country’s commitment to gender equality, inclusive growth, and sustainable development.

In a statement issued to newsmen on Saturday by her Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Jonathan Eze, the Minister said the Nigeria for Women Programme had become the country’s most significant women’s economic empowerment platform, transforming the way social protection and livelihood interventions are delivered.

She noted that the scale-up phase marks the expansion of the initiative to all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, integrating lessons from the first phase that ran from 2018 to 2024.

According to her, the scale-up project brings together financial inclusion, livelihood support, and social protection under one national platform, turning Women Affinity Groups into permanent economic institutions with stronger ties to formal finance, markets, and public services.

‘We are replacing fragmented interventions with a systemic model that positions women as the drivers of Nigeria’s inclusive growth, resilience, and long-term stability,’ she said.

Hon. Sulaiman-Ibrahim explained that the NFWP-SU aligns with the Nigeria Women Economic Empowerment Policy, the World Bank’s Global Crises Response Framework, and the Sustainable Development Goals on gender equality and peace.

She observed that despite being about 18 months behind schedule, the project had successfully taken off in 18 states and was rated satisfactory in the recent World Bank Implementation Support Mission.

‘The success of this scale-up depends on every one of us here. When we empower a woman, we empower a household, and when we empower millions of women, we recalibrate an entire economy,’ she added.

Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Dr. Mariam Ismaila Keshinro, described the inauguration as another milestone in the nation’s determination to advance women’s economic inclusion and empowerment.

She said the Nigeria for Women Programme, conceived as a flagship initiative of the Federal Government with the support of the World Bank, had proven successful in addressing barriers that limit women’s productivity, income, and participation in socio-economic activities

Dr. Keshinro stated that from 2018 to 2024, the parent project empowered thousands of women through access to financial services, capacity building, and the formation of Women Affinity Groups that have become veritable platforms for solidarity, entrepreneurship, and community development.

She added that the scale-up would extend these benefits to millions more across the country. ‘This committee carries both a technical and moral responsibility because the hopes of millions of Nigerian women are tied to the work we embark on together,’ she said.

The National Coordinator of the Nigeria for Women Project, Dr. Hadiza Maina, presented an overview of the progress made so far and commended the Federal Government, the World Bank, and all development partners for their continued support.

She said the scale-up project builds on the successes of the parent project by expanding its coverage and deepening its impact, with a target of reaching about four million women nationwide.

Speaking on behalf of the World Bank, Mr. Michael Ilesanmi, who represented the Country Director, praised the Federal Government for its commitment to sustaining the programme and ensuring women’s inclusion in national development.

He noted that the Nigeria for Women Programme had recorded tangible results in savings culture, entrepreneurship, and improved livelihoods among women in participating states. He assured that the World Bank would continue to support the initiative and work closely with the Federal Government to ensure its sustainability.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, commended the project as a vital driver of inclusive economic growth and human capital development. He pledged that the Ministry of Finance would continue to provide technical oversight to guarantee transparency, efficiency, and alignment with national fiscal priorities.

‘Empowering women economically translates directly into improved productivity, better family welfare, and overall national development. The Nigeria for Women Programme is a sound investment in our future,’ he stated.

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, noted that the programme aligns with the National Development Plan (2021-2025) and Nigeria’s broader economic agenda for sustainable growth.

He said that initiatives like the Nigeria for Women Programme demonstrate the government’s commitment to ensuring that no segment of society is left behind in the nation’s development efforts.

The event was attended by representatives of key ministries and agencies including Agriculture and Food Security, Health, Water Resources and Sanitation, Communications and Digital Economy, Trade and Investment, SMEDAN, NAFDAC, and EFInA, among others.

The newly inaugurated Federal Steering Committee is expected to provide strategic guidance, approve workplans and budgets, monitor project progress, and ensure synergy among implementing agencies.

Hon. Sulaiman-Ibrahim, while formally inaugurating the committee and presenting its eight-month action plan, urged all members to remain committed to the vision of transforming women’s potential into national prosperity.

She reaffirmed that women’s economic empowerment is not an act of charity but a form of nation-building, peace-building, and climate action rolled into one.

Anambra guber: Shun vote buying, Observers urges electorate

The Nigerian Situationroom, a coalition of civil society organisations, in collaboration with the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa), an election observing bodies, has urged eligible voters in Anambra to shun all kinds of inducements and distractions and participate actively in electing the next governor of the State in forthcoming November 8, 2025 governorship election.

The groups, at a voters enlightenment campaigns held at Regina caeli junction in Awka on Friday along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, said it would be wrong for voters to sale their mandates because of bags of rice, clothing or any amount of money without considering the future impact in society.

According to the Anambra State Chairman, Nigeria Situationroom, Prince Chris Azor, the best support needed from the citizenry on election day are to come out en-masse and vote without allowing inducements and other distractions to take them away from polling units.

Azor, who is also the President, International Peace and Civic Responsibility Centre (IPCRC), reassured voters that their votes would count having engaged with key stakeholders and forged effective network for protection of their mandates.

‘Today’s procession is climax of our activities towards ensuring that November 8 governorship poll records a massive turnout of voters, be credible and hitch-free as already planned by the INEC. We have galvanised and empowered the stakeholders to support in making it a reality. Anambra voters will come out en-masse and vote. Not only voting, protect your votes. With mandate protection, our votes will count.

‘We have special observers; trained and empowered to work on election day. We have the crew to counter information disorder. We are appealing to the media to set agenda on voters apathy and mobilise people to vote massively for the candidate of their choice. Let the people know that it is their right to vote and protect their votes. We are doing everything necessary to ensure that people votes counts even at collation centres ,’ he added.

Also speaking, the Director, CDD-West Africa, Dr. Dauda Garuba explained that the public enlightenment campaign supported by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), was aimed at encouraging massive participation on the November 8 poll.

Garuba, who was represented by Chibuike Mgbeahurike, recalled that Anambra State has suffered low voters turnout for long, and enjoined eligible voters yet to collect their voters cards to quickly visit their registration centres (electoral wards) for the collection and get ready to use them in exercising their franchise.

He said that when the masses vote en-masse on election day, it would boost the election integrity, lead to emergence of a popular candidate and deepen democracy for massive socioeconomic development.

According to him, the organisation and their partners have held series of engagement campaigns with stakeholders such as INEC officers, security apparatus, government institutions and parastatals, media, civil society members, political parties, traders, among others, leading to establishment of mandate protection network and fact-checkers for credible conduct of November 8 poll.

‘The idea is to encourage the masses to shun every form of distractions on election day. We want them to shutdown their shops, businesses and other engagements and go to their polling units to exercise their franchise. It is your right to join in electing whoever will govern you in the next four years because democracy is government of the people, by the people and for the people.

‘We are discouraging voters apathy. We want the outcome of the election to be a popular one. We can assure you that your votes will count. Your mandate will be protected. Don’t collect money to vote. We must rise to stop politicians from taking us for granted. We will keep voting until sometime happens. We are partnering with the security and other stakeholders to protect your mandate,’ he stated.

FCT EXCO ratifies purchase of 12 new ambulances

The Federal Capital Territory Executive Committee (EXCO) has ratified the procurement of 12 brand new state-of-the-art and customized ambulances at a cost of N1.7 billion to improve response to emergency situations in the FCT.

Also ratified is the procurement of fertiliser for farmers in the territory.

She also disclosed that FEMA’s 112 emergency toll line was functional and members of the public were free to check it out. Mandate Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon Ango Abdullahi Suleiman, on his part, stated that the FCTA had ratified the procurement of fertilisers, MPK, which has been supplied.

He said this was in ‘the quest to put a smile on the faces of farmers, and to ensure food security in the territory’. The Mandate Secretary therefore expressed hope that there would be better output at the end of the season, thereby contributing to food security in FCT, and in the nation at large.

He explained that this was necessary for effective teaching and learning for students in the FCT.

The Mandate Secretary, Youth Development, Hon Lawan Geidam, told journalists that the Federal Capital Territory Administration had approved a memorandum for the complete renovation of the Nyanya Youth Centre. He pointed out that when fully renovated, the Centre will become a good tool for youth empowerment. He further stated that the Centre had a metal fabrication, tailoring, sculpting centres, as well as an ICT centre, which will go a long way to help the youths in the Territory to be both self-employed and self-dependent.

Addressing newsmen also on the outcome of the meeting, the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Hon Chidi Amadi shed light on water supply in the FCT, saying that the Administration had gotten approval for the procurement of treatment chemicals and automatic gas oils for the smooth functioning of the Lower Usuma Dam.

It’s 2025: Is Your Insurance Provider Keeping Up With the Times?

Let’s be honest: The world is constantly changing. Technology has streamlined our lives; we buy groceries, pay bills, and request rides all from our phones. Yet, for too long, purchasing insurance meant dealing with slow websites, unnecessary calls, and stressful paperwork.

With its brand-new website, Leadway Assurance has redefined what insurance should look and feel like in 2025 – modern, mobile, and made for Nigerians who live life on the go.

Here are four ways to know your insurance provider is keeping up with the times.

1. They Think ‘Click,’ Not ‘Queue’

If your insurer still expects you to show up with files and passport photographs at an office, you might be in the wrong decade.

Leadway’s new website has taken everything online: quotes, renewals, claims, you name it. You can now get covered or update your policy faster than it takes to scroll through your messages.

Insurance shouldn’t test your patience; it should fit your lifestyle.

2. Convenience Comes First

In 2025, convenience isn’t luxury; it’s the minimum requirement.

The best insurers design for real people, not perfect ones. Leadway gets that your day can be chaotic, you’re running a business, paying bills, managing kids, and fighting traffic. So, the platform is simple, fast, and works beautifully on mobile.

No paperwork. No unnecessary calls. Just peace of mind in a few clicks.

3. They Put You in Control

Old-school insurance made customers feel like passengers. The new Leadway website experience puts you in the driver’s seat.

You can now track your claims, manage multiple policies, update your details, and even make payments at your own time. It’s your insurance, your terms.

4. They Speak Human, Not Legalese

Some insurance websites read like they were written by lawyers for other lawyers. Leadway Assurance doesn’t.

The language is clear, conversational, and refreshingly straightforward. You actually understand what’s covered and what’s not, no more decoding fine print with a magnifying glass.

Understanding your policy shouldn’t feel like an exam. And now, it doesn’t.

Keeping Up Isn’t Optional, It’s Expected

We live in a fast, digital world, and Nigerians deserve services that move with the times. Leadway Assurance has found the balance between reliability and innovation, blending its legacy of trust with the simplicity today’s customers expect.

If your insurance experience still feels like a full-time job, then it’s time to upgrade.

YEIDEP postpones Batch A grant disbursement

The Federal Ministry of Youth Development’s Initiative, the Youth Economic Intervention and De-Radicalisation Programme (YEIDEP) has announced the postponement of the business grants disbursement to Batch A applicants, initially scheduled to commence on October 20, 2025.

The programme’s Coordinator-General, Comrade Kennedy Iyere, in a statement, cited complexities in ensuring a transparent, accountable, and accurate disbursement process as the reason for the delay.

He has cautioned applicants against fake news circulating on social media platforms claiming that the disbursement has commenced, warning that internet fraudsters are peddling false information to extort money from unsuspecting individuals.

YEIDEP emphasised that every benefit or gain related to the programme is offered free of charge and advised the public to ignore criminal elements seeking to exploit them.

According to him, a new date for funds disbursement will be announced through various media platforms once the process is finalized.

Meanwhile, YEIDEP has announced that the registration portal will reopen on October 27, 2025, for Batch B recruitment, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that every registered member receives their entitled benefits.

‘We warn and caution all our registered applicants and potential beneficiaries to ignore the fake news which have flooded different social media platforms falsely reporting that YEIDEP’s business grants disbursement has taken effect.

Internet fraudsters are the ones peddling these fake news, in their desperate attempt to misinform innocent Nigerians, and make them to become gullible to their tricks of financial extortion.

‘Please be conscious not to allow anyone to deceive you. Every benefit or gain relating to YEIDEP is offered free-of-charge. We therefore advise everyone to be well guided, and be smart enough to ignore criminal elements who may want to extort money from the public by peddling fake news to aid their criminal ambitions.

‘We are also delighted to announce to the general public via this medium that the registration portal will be re-opened on Monday 27th October, 2025 for the ‘Batch B’ recruitment.

‘We sincerely wish to express our commitment towards the successful implementation of YEIDEP, as we work to ensure that every registered member receives the benefits entitled. Further updates will be communicated through our YouTube, Facebook and other digital communication channels.’
