EU Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Virginijus Sinkevičius reminds citizens of the actions by the EC in order to restore EU’s ecosystems.
In a Tweet on Sunday, on the occasion of Biodiversity day the Commissioner said that the European Commission will put forward a proposal for legally binding EU nature restoration targets, pointing out that restoring EU’s ecosystems will help to increase biodiversity, mitigate and adapt to climate change, and prevent and reduce the impacts of natural disasters.
Developing a proposal for binding EU nature restoration targets is a key element of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 as set by the EC. According to a press release on the EC’s website the Commission is preparing an impact assessment to support the development of EU nature restoration targets, and to assess their potential environmental, social and economic impacts. It is added that public and stakeholder views and insights will contribute to the impact assessment.
