’Christian genocide’: Peter Obi breaks silence on Trump’s threats against Nigeria

The presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the United States’ recent classification of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ and its indication of possible military intervention, describing the development as a wake-up call for Nigerians.

He noted that the country is facing an alarming level of insecurity marked by widespread violence and destruction of lives and property, citing reports that over 10,000 Nigerians have been allegedly killed since May 2023.

Obi said the killings are avoidable and attributed the worsening situation to weak leadership, poor governance, and lack of commitment from those in authority.

While acknowledging that insecurity predates the current administration, he criticised the ruling APC government for what he described as incompetence and failure to manage national resources effectively.

He emphasised that Nigeria should be a nation where justice and peace prevail without oppression or fear.

Obi called for constructive diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the United States, urging both countries to strengthen cooperation and adopt peaceful, practical solutions to address the security crisis.

He said, ‘The recent pronouncement by the US government declaring Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ (CPC) and indicating possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern.

‘There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and the most shocking loss of lives and property. According to Amnesty International, over 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023 and as I have repeatedly lamented, the unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians is most condemnable, and all efforts must be made to bring it to a stop. It is equally important to state that the terrible situation is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance.

‘While the insecurity did not start with the present government, what is most unfortunate is the lack and absence of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism and passion on the part of APC APC-led government/leaders to effectively govern, galvanise and lead Nigeria where no one is unwarrantedly oppressed and killed, a Nation where peace, truth and justice reign!

‘As democracies, Nigeria and the US have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter. The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and any other plausible engagement by both nations aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns. Both countries must work in concert and expeditiously towards that purpose. -PO’

This is coming after United States President, Donald Trump, in a post on his Truth Social account, instructed the U.S. War Department to prepare for a possible action in Nigeria.

He accused the Nigerian government of turning a blind eye to what he described as the ‘mass slaughter of Christians’ across the country.

Trump warned that the United States would immediately halt all aid and assistance to Nigeria if the attacks on Christians continue.

He also indicated that America might intervene militarily to eliminate what he called ‘Islamic terrorists’ responsible for the killings.

‘If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,’ Trump wrote.

He further stated, ‘I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!’

Kogi: Troops rescue two kidnap victims, recover ransom

Troops of 12 Brigade Nigerian Army deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Oguma have successfully rescued two kidnap victims and recovered the ransom money meant for their release.

Lieutenant Hassan Abdullahi, Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations 12 Brigade Nigerian Army, in a statement explained that the operation which led to the rescue of the victims took place on 2 November 2025, following credible intelligence on kidnapping activities along the Itobe-Adumu-Ejule axis, as well as reports of relatives of some of the victims attempting to deliver ransom to secure their release.

Troops acted swiftly on the information and projected a patrol to Achigili Forest to intercept the bandits.

However, while en route to the location, the troops came under fire from the criminals. In the ensuing exchange, the gallant soldiers engaged the bandits with superior firepower, forcing them to abandon two victims along with the ransom money. The criminals subsequently fled into the forest with various degrees of gunshot wounds.

Following the encounter, the troops rescued the victims and recovered the sum of ?3,800,000 intended for ransom payment.

The rescued victims were immediately debriefed to aid further operations, while the recovered cash was handed back to them.

They are currently in safe custody at the troops’ location pending handover to the appropriate authorities.

The Nigerian Army remains resolute and unwavering in its determination to protect lives and property. Members of the public are therefore enjoined to continually support the military and other security agencies by providing timely and credible information that will aid in the fight against criminal elements within the state.

Kwara: Court acquits two women in possession of firearms, ammunition case

A Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin on Monday discharged and acquitted two young women, including a pregnant mother.

They were arraigned on a four-count charge of unlawful possession of firearms, aiding and abetting kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, among others.

The accused, Aisha Haruna and Rabi Umar Murtala, were arrested by men of the Police Anti-Kidnapping Squad on 25 June 2025 in Babanla community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state, while in a vehicle.

Other suspects in the vehicle fled the scene, while the police said they found an AK-47 rifle and 31 live rounds of ammunition in the bag of one of the women.

The prosecution, led by the Senior State Counsel in the Ministry of Justice, I. B. Olorundare, had told the court that the women were intercepted by the police and members of the local vigilante team at about 5:00 p.m. inside a vehicle carrying some young women whose movement appeared suspicious.

Delivering his judgement, which lasted over an hour, Justice M. O. Folorunso said the prosecution failed to prove the allegations against the women.

According to the court, the evidence presented by police witnesses was contradictory.

Justice Folorunso, who noted that one of the defendants admitted that an English rifle was found in her bag during the police search, added that the police witness’s evidence did not state clearly whether the weapon was an AK-47 or an AK-49.

He also held that the prosecution failed to prove that the women had any intent to commit an illegal act.

The judge thereafter discharged and acquitted them.

He further directed their counsels to provide them with transportation fare to their homes in Kaduna and Kanmbi community, Moro Local Government Area, respectively.

Also, Justice Folorunso convicted and sentenced members of a three-man armed robbery gang to death by hanging for armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms.

The offence, which was committed on 2 March 2024 at Oko Erin area in Ilorin, the state capital, at about 6:00 a.m., involved the robbery of a victim of his Infinix Note 11 phone with the use of a gun.

The judge, who became emotional while delivering the sentence, wept and ordered that ‘the three young men be hanged by the neck until they die.’

Trump: Unite against foreign intervention, Afenifere urges Nigerians

The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on Nigerians to unite against any form of foreign intervention in the country’s internal affairs and to pursue local solutions to insecurity through restructuring and the establishment of state police.

Afenifere call was contained in a statement jointly signed by the leader of the group, HRH Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and National Publicity Secretary, Prince Justice Faloye, who called on the Federal Government to urgently implement state police and the 2014 National Conference restructuring resolutions.

The group noted that the insecurity across the country and rising global concern over the nation’s stability were direct consequences of the government’s failure to decentralize policing and implement the 2014 National Conference recommendations.

Afenifere warned that the country’s deteriorating security situation had become a source of international embarrassment, creating fears that foreign powers could justify intervention under the guise of humanitarian assistance.

The group said implementing state and local government police would not only restore safety and public confidence but also eliminate the growing perception of Nigeria as a failed state unable to protect its citizens.

According to Afenifere, the over-centralized police structure has left the country vulnerable and ineffective in addressing widespread violence, kidnapping, and terrorism.

The group insisted that the President must take full responsibility for the current security crisis since all policing authority is tied to his office.

The statement read: ‘Afenifere appeals to Nigerians to unify against foreign intervention and implores all Nigerians to look for local solutions to our sectarian and ethnic conflicts in restructuring.

‘Afenifere and all peace loving Nigerians hereby demand immediate implementation of state police to curb insecurity, and the implemention of the 2014 Confab restructuring resolutions to ensure peace and unity.

‘This would not only save lives but remove the threat of foreign intervention in Nigeria’s affairs that has been conduced by the carnage and its attendant chaotic situation observed even from far-flung lands of a general absence of governance arising from insecurity or of ungoverned spaces’

The statement stated further that; ‘President Tinubu should not allow foreign military humanitarian intervention to cause religious and ethnic wars due to negligence or lack of political will to restructure Nigeria for peace and equity.

‘We must not forget our history that it was the excuse of curbing Transatlantic slavery that prompted foreign military humanitarian intervention that led to our colonization.

‘It is ironic that the influx of terrorists that partly led to the end of the Jonathan administration and coming to power of APC is now threatening our corporate existence due to the APC failure to restructure and implement state police.

‘The rising international condemnation of insecurity in Nigeria is an indictment of the government that has failed to implement state police to curb insecurity, and restructuring for equity and peaceful coexistence since the 2014 Confab

‘Immediate implementation of state police and the 2014 Confab resolutions will not only save lives but remove the threat of foreign intervention in Nigeria’s affairs,’ the statement

The statement further expressed concern over what it described as the Tinubu administration’s ‘penchant for over-centralization,’ warning that the failure to appoint ambassadors to key countries like the United States was weakening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence at a critical time.

The group stated that ‘ this administration’s penchant for overcentralization of governance is counterproductive, not only within our borders, but has now reflected in our diplomatic relations or lack of it.

‘The lack of ambassadors in USA and other nations is deplorable. Afenifere demands that the Tinubu administration immediately appoints ambassadors to all our world embassies, because it is obvious that the Presidency is incapable of directly administering our diplomatic relations, since we suddenly face the threat of foreign intervention and war without diplomatic buffers’

Reaffirming its earlier position during the midterm assessment of the Tinubu administration on May 29, 2025, the group said the continued delay in implementing restructuring had led to unnecessary bloodshed and deepened national division.

Afenifere insisted that only through true federalism, equitable power distribution, and community-based policing could Nigeria overcome its challenges and preserve its sovereignty.

‘Afenifere regards the ten years delay that has wasted thousands of lives unnecessarily as culpable gross negligence by the government. Regardless of the categorization of our insecurity as either religious or tribal genocide, the point is people are dying due to the failure to create state and local goverment police for efficiency, giving the people the right of self preservation in their states and localities.

‘In our recent midterm assessment of the Tinubu administration on May 29th 2025, Afenifere once again warned that the continued overcentralized police force made him ultimately responsible for the unnecessary deaths in the Middlebelt and across the Nation.

‘As long as policing is centralized and tied to the President, all blame of insecurity resides with his office. This is not only untenable for him but the whole country, since we are all bound to suffer the collective punishment of failure in other states, some of who allegedly bargain with terrorists’.

NAAPE plans to provide loss of licence insurance cover to pilots, engineers

The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has unveiled plans to provide comprehensive Loss of Licence Insurance Cover for all Nigerian pilots and aircraft engineers.

NAAPE said the initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening the welfare and professional security of aviation personnel across the country.

According to a statement by Engr. Blessing N. Ahmadu, the scheme, developed in partnership with First Standard Insurance Brokers, is designed to protect pilots and engineers who lose their professional licences due to medical incapacity or other qualifying conditions that render them unable to continue flying or maintaining aircraft.

‘It will provide financial compensation, based on policy terms, to affected members, helping them manage career interruptions or medical recovery without financial distress’.

The statement said the President of NAAPE, Captain Bunmi Gindeh stated that the Association’reached the decision after extensive consultations with stakeholders in the aviation industry.

He explained that the move reflects NAAPE’s commitment to improving members’ welfare and promoting professional stability within the sector.

‘Loss of Licence insurance for aviation professionals has long been a standard benefit in developed aviation markets worldwide. Our members face unique occupational risks that can abruptly end their careers.

‘The goal of this initiative is to ensure that no pilot or engineer is left without financial support if they are declared medically unfit to continue their professional duties,

‘By introducing this important coverage in Nigeria, we are not only protecting individual professionals and their families but also strengthening the aviation sector by ensuring that our highly trained workforce can focus on maintaining the highest safety standards, knowing their careers are financially protected against unforeseen medical challenges.

‘NAAPE is also working to make the insurance cover affordable and accessible to all members, including those in private and charter operations,’ Captain Gindeh further stated.

The statement noted further that the President emphasised that the Association’s goal is to standardise professional welfare across both public and private aviation sectors.

On his part, Engr. Mudi Muhammad, NAAPE Deputy President, said ‘we have seen too many of our colleagues face financial hardship after losing their licences due to unexpected medical conditions.

‘This insurance programme ensures that no Nigerian pilot or engineer will face such circumstances alone. It provides a safety net that every aviation professional deserves.’

The statement noted that enrolment details and premium structures will be announced in the coming weeks. ‘NAAPE will also conduct nationwide sensitisation workshops and information sessions to educate members and eligible professionals on the benefits and enrolment process’ the statement stated.

Trump’s threat: Presidency denies Tinubu visiting US on Tuesday

The Presidency has dismissed reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to visit the United States on Tuesday to meet with U.S. Vice President JD Vance over President Donald Trump’s recent designation of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern.’

Reacting to the report, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, described it as fake news, saying there was no planned trip or meeting between President Tinubu and the U.S. Vice President.

In a post on his X handle on Monday, Ajayi wrote: ‘There is a Sahara Reporters story that President Tinubu is going to the U.S. on Tuesday to see U.S. Vice President JD Vance. That story is not true. I can see that the fake news by Sahara has become the basis for some uninformed commentaries since yesterday.

‘If President Tinubu is going to the White House, he won’t be going to see a vice president.’

Sahara Reporters had earlier alleged that Tinubu would travel to Washington for high-level diplomatic talks amid tensions over alleged mass killings of Christians in Nigeria and warnings of possible U.S. military action.

FG approves use of Lagos-Calabar Coastal road over Lekki truck accident

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation on Monday announced that the Federal Government has approved the opening of the Lekki axis of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road for use by motorists due to a truck accident in Lekki area.

In a statement released on Monday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the use of the Lekki axis of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road will be on until normalcy is restored in the area.

According to Oluwaseun Osiyemi, ‘The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation wishes to inform motorists that due to a truck accident at Chisco area, Lekki, the Federal Ministry of Works has approved the opening of the Coastal Road for use pending when normalcy is restored.

‘Motorists are implored to be patient while plying the area.’

Recall that in a swift and well-coordinated emergency response operations, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in the early hours of Monday, averted what could have resulted in an unprecedented fire disaster following the overturning of a gas-laden Howo white tanker truck along the main carriageway at Chisco in Lekki area of Lagos.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred when the driver of the truck, fully loaded with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cylinders, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn on the busy expressway.

Given the highly volatile nature of the product, the situation posed an immediate and severe threat to human life and property, necessitating urgent technical intervention.

Upon arriving at the scene, LASTMA personnel swiftly cordoned off the affected area, securing both the overturned vehicle and the CNG tanks to prevent any leakage or ignition that could have triggered an explosive conflagration.

Recognizing the magnitude of the potential danger, the LASTMA Rescue and Emergency Unit immediately activated a multi-agency emergency protocol, summoning key responders such as the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lekki Concession Company (LCC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). Through this rapid, inter-agency collaboration, the imminent threat was expertly contained, and normalcy was swiftly restored.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who was physically present at the scene, lauded the prompt and disciplined conduct of his officers and partner agencies.

He disclosed that the upturned gas tanker was professionally recovered using state-of-the-art heavy-duty cranes and recovery equipment, mobilized to the site.

According to him, ‘Our officers displayed remarkable precision, professionalism, and courage in managing the situation.

‘Their immediate action in securing the environment prevented what could have been an unspeakable tragedy. We ensured that the recovery process was conducted under the highest safety protocols to eliminate any residual risk.’

Mr. Bakare-Oki further revealed that additional LASTMA personnel were swiftly deployed to the area to manage the resultant traffic congestion and guarantee the safety of commuters navigating through the Victoria Island corridor.

While the main carriageway was closed temporarily from Chisco inward Victoria Island, motorists were immediately diverted through the new coastal road and reconnected via Bar Beach, ensuring the continuity of vehicular movement till the recovery operation was safely concluded and the road reopened to normal traffic.

The General Manager emphasized that the incident underscores the critical importance of adherence to road safety regulations, especially among truck drivers and operators of articulated vehicles transporting flammable and hazardous materials.

He admonished such operators to strictly observe prescribed speed limits, maintain their vehicles in sound mechanical condition, and exercise heightened vigilance, particularly under wet weather conditions.

He further cautioned that products such as Gas, Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Diesel, and Kerosene require utmost care during conveyance to prevent catastrophic mishaps that could endanger lives and property.

Reaffirming the Lagos State Government’s unwavering commitment to safety, Mr. Bakare-Oki assured that LASTMA, in synergy with all allied emergency and enforcement agencies, will continue to uphold the highest standards of traffic discipline, environmental safety, and coordinated emergency response, in pursuit of a Greater, Safer, and More Resilient Lagos.

How victims of leaked nude images can seek justice under Nigerian law – Lawyers

Legal experts have advised victims whose nude images were shared online without their consent to pursue both civil and criminal actions under Nigerian law, citing violations of privacy, dignity and digital rights.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, the lawyers condemned the unauthorised publication of intimate photos, particularly in cases involving models whose images were leaked by companies without consent, describing it as a breach of constitutional and statutory protections.

Human rights lawyer Mrs Jumoke Ajayi said affected individuals could approach the courts to enforce their fundamental right to privacy under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

‘When a person’s nude photos are published without consent, it amounts to an infringement of that right and defamation of character. The victim can sue both the company and the individuals involved,’ she said.

Ajayi added that victims could also file petitions with law-enforcement agencies under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, noting that Section 24 of the Act criminalises the distribution of intimate images without consent – an offence punishable by imprisonment.

Another Lagos-based lawyer, Mr Franklin Ojumu, stressed the importance of consent and clear contractual terms in modelling agreements. He said individuals must carefully review all clauses before signing, adding that if nude or semi-nude photographs were not expressly agreed, any publication of such images could be legally challenged.

‘Even if there was consent, it does not give the company unlimited rights to publish or share those images online,’ he said, noting that victims could claim damages for emotional distress, reputational harm and invasion of privacy.

Ojumu observed that Nigerian courts are becoming more receptive to digital-rights violations, and well-presented cases could set strong legal precedents.

Similarly, Mr Chibuikem Opara of the Justification Firm in Ikeja described the act as cyberbullying, actionable under the Cybercrimes Act.

He said victims could report to law-enforcement agencies and request that the ‘corporate veil’ be lifted so individuals behind the offence could be held personally liable.

He added that, under civil law, victims could sue for breach of contract, fraudulent misrepresentation and inhuman or degrading treatment, potentially at the National Industrial Court if employment or labour issues are involved.

Also weighing in, Mr Ademola Owolabi, managing partner at Adetokunbo and Co. Chambers, said the act represents a case where a contractual relationship gives rise to criminal liability, given that the company used the model’s images without express permission.

Mr Ogedi Ogu, country director of Advocacy for Justice and Accountability, described the incident as a violation of fundamental human rights.

‘I do not think the agreement to model for the company included posing nude, nor does it entitle the company to obtain, retain or commercialise her nude photos,’ Ogu said.

He added that the affected individual could seek damages and injunctive relief to restrain the company from further sharing or distributing the images.
