DPP denies allegations of violence against MCP member; reveals shocking truth behind incident

By Jones Gadama

In a brazen attempt to deflect attention from their own troubled history and ongoing internal violence, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has issued a press release accusing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of orchestrating a brutal attack on one of their members, Philos Andrea. The MCP’s narrative, however, is not only misleading but flagrantly false.

A closer examination of the facts reveals a very different story—one that exposes the MCP’s hypocrisy and penchant for violence under the guise of political victimhood.

The MCP press release dated 3rd October 2025 claims that Philos Andrea was “severely beaten” by DPP members led by Isaac Jomo Osman upon his arrival in Limbe. Yet credible sources and eyewitness accounts paint a starkly different picture.

Those who manhandled Andrea were not DPP supporters but individuals from his own circle—people he had previously tortured and terrorized.

Philos Andrea is no innocent victim; rather, he is a notorious figure who has long acted above the law, protected by powerful MCP operatives. His reign of intimidation and violence in Phalombe has been widely reported but conveniently ignored by MCP leadership.

The MaraviPost has extensively documented how the Limbe police have historically been reluctant to arrest Andrea due to pressure from influential figures such as Richard Chimwendo Banda, who allegedly intervened on his behalf to secure his unconditional release.

This impunity emboldened Andrea to continue his violent ways, reportedly engaging in beatings, stabbings, and even hacking individuals mercilessly.

It is disconcerting that the MCP, which now portrays itself as a defender of peace and democracy, has tolerated such lawlessness within its own ranks.

Isaac Jomo Osman, a former Blantyre City Deputy Mayor and a respected member of the DPP, was in fact the hero of the day.

Contrary to the MCP’s baseless accusations, Jomo rushed to the scene to save Andrea, who was on the verge of being burnt alive by an angry mob—mob members who were neither DPP supporters nor affiliated with any political party. Jomo’s swift and courageous actions prevented a potential tragedy.

“When I arrived, the situation was chaotic. Philos Andrea was being attacked by an enraged crowd, and I knew I had to act quickly to save him.

I escorted him to the Limbe police station to ensure his safety,” Jomo stated unequivocally.

Jomo’s intervention should be commended as a demonstration of responsible leadership and respect for human life—qualities the MCP appears to lack.

The party’s recent call for peace, delivered by its National Publicity Secretary Dr. Jessie Kabwila, rings hollow in light of the MCP’s own history of orchestrating violence and intimidation.

It is laughable that the MCP now positions itself as a victim when it has been an agent of unrest and lawlessness for years.

The timing of the MCP’s press release is also suspect.

Issued mere hours before the inauguration of the new administration, it appears calculated to sow discord and undermine the peaceful transfer of power that the country desperately needs.

This irresponsible behavior threatens the stability of Malawi at a critical moment.

Malawians deserve the truth. The DPP remains committed to a peaceful transition and upholding the rule of law.

It is imperative that the MCP stops playing the victim and starts addressing the violence festering within its own ranks.

Political maturity demands accountability and an end to inflammatory rhetoric designed to incite rather than unite.

The incident involving Philos Andrea was not a politically motivated attack by the DPP, but a consequence of his own violent conduct and the resultant community backlash.

Isaac Jomo Osman’s brave intervention saved Andrea from a potentially fatal outcome.

The MCP’s attempt to rewrite this reality is a disservice to the nation’s pursuit of peace and democracy.

It is time for all political actors to prioritize unity and respect for the law as Malawi charts its future.
