Mutharika orders MACRA, MEC, MHC, Prison head offices’ relocation from Lilongwe to originality

In a move stirring political debate, President Peter Mutharika directs that the headquarters of MEC, MHC, and MACRA be transferred to Blantyre, with critics calling it an attempt to erase Chakwera’s legacy.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Peter Mutharika has reportedly ordered that several major government institutions relocate their headquarters from Lilongwe to Blantyre.

According to a statement shared by former legislator and academic Dr. Jessie Kabwila on her Facebook page, the directive affects the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), the Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC), and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA).

Kabwila claimed that the move is part of a broader effort by Mutharika to undo some of the developments initiated by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera during his administration.

She wrote that Mutharika’s decision appears to be politically motivated, suggesting that it reflects an attempt to diminish Chakwera’s influence and accomplishments in the capital city.

Kabwila also alleged that the president is considering relocating the headquarters of the Malawi Prison Service (MPS) from Lilongwe to Zomba.

According to her, the move might be intended to restore Mutharika’s sense of control and comfort, following what she described as years of political sidelining under Chakwera’s leadership.

The post, which has since attracted significant public attention, has reignited discussion over the long-standing regional divide between Malawi’s Northern, Central, and Southern regions.

Critics argue that such relocations risk politicizing public institutions and undermining efforts to promote balanced national development.

Others, however, believe Mutharika’s decision could decentralize operations and create new economic opportunities for Blantyre and other southern cities.

The alleged directive comes at a time when political rivalry between the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) continues to shape public discourse on governance and policy decisions.

Kabwila’s remarks, titled “History Retraced,” seem to suggest that Mutharika’s actions are an attempt to revive old political dynamics and reassert dominance over Malawi’s administrative geography.

Whether the relocations will proceed as indicated remains to be seen, but the conversation has already sparked sharp political and social reactions across the country.
