Govt freezes funding to Zambia FA over Chipolopolo poor results

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-The Government of Zambia has suspended all financial support to the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) following a series of disappointing performances by the men’s senior national football team, the Chipolopolo.

In a statement jointly issued by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts and the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ), government expressed deep concern over the poor results registered by the team in recent international competitions.

The statement noted that despite the country’s financial challenges, the government has continued to allocate significant resources to support the national team and its technical staff, including expenses for air travel, accommodation, bonuses and a portion of the head coach’s salary.

“It is essential to understand the rationale behind continued government funding in the face of these unsatisfactory performances,” reads part of the statement.

The Ministry said it has demanded a detailed explanation from FAZ on the measures being taken to address the team’s poor performance and restore competitiveness in Zambian football.

It also seeks assurances that the head coach is delivering on his contractual obligations and that there is a clear justification for why public funds should continue to support the team despite a lack of results on the pitch.

Government stressed that transparency and accountability in the use of public funds are critical, especially when dealing with a sport that holds such a central place in Zambia’s national identity.

The statement emphasized that football remains a cornerstone of Zambia’s cultural heritage, capable of uniting communities, promoting national pride and inspiring youth toward positive lifestyles.

“Football has the power to unite communities, promote national pride and inspire youth to adopt healthy lifestyles,” the Ministry said.

“However, we must ensure that public investment yields meaningful outcomes and drives real progress,”the Ministry added.

The statement further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting sports development but underlined that continued financial backing must be based on clear accountability and performance.
