In recent statements, Timothy Mtambo, once a prominent figure in Malawi’s street activism through the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), has claimed full commitment to supporting the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) in addressing Malawi’s economic challenges.

As AFORD’s Vice President, Mtambo insists that his allegiance lies with the current Mutharika administration and that any failure by this government would also reflect a failure for AFORD. However, a closer examination of Mtambo’s political trajectory and past declarations reveals a glaring contradiction that undermines the credibility of his newfound loyalty.

His claims are not only unfounded but deeply hypocritical, betraying both the AFORD agenda and the electorate’s expectations.

To begin with, Mtambo’s recent pivot to endorse the DPP-AFORD alliance starkly contrasts with public declarations he made just before and during the 2020-2024 election cycle.

At that time, Mtambo categorically distanced himself from the DPP, particularly condemning their choice of running mate, Jane Ansah.

He went beyond mere criticism, actively campaigning against the DPP, warning Malawians about the dangers of returning the party to power.

His vocal opposition was not a subtle disagreement but a full-throttle rejection of DPP’s political project, which logically means he was not supporting the AFORD agenda as it was formally aligned with DPP.

This contradiction calls into question the sincerity of Mtambo’s current assertions.

If Mtambo was truly committed to AFORD’s agenda, he would have supported the DPP-AFORD alliance from the beginning or at least remained consistent in his stance.

Instead, his previous actions reflect a deliberate choice to undermine the alliance, directly opposing the partnership that now, retrospectively, he claims to champion.

This flip-flop is not just a matter of political repositioning but a fundamental breach of trust with both his party and the citizens who followed his activism.

Mtambo’s role as AFORD Vice President should ideally mean he upholds and promotes the party’s interests consistently.

Yet, by publicly rejecting the very alliance that defines AFORD’s current political engagement, Mtambo effectively distanced himself from the party’s strategic direction.

His refusal to support the partnership with the DPP during critical electoral moments undermines his claim to be working in AFORD’s interest.

In essence, if he was not supporting the alliance, he was not truly working for AFORD’s agenda. This glaring inconsistency must be acknowledged and scrutinized.

Moreover, Mtambo’s narrative of shifting from activism to political consolidation appears to be a convenient cover for political self-preservation.

His insistence that Malawians should “give DPP and AFORD time and space” to deliver on promises sounds more like an attempt to shield his new political allies from scrutiny rather than a genuine call for national unity.

Given his previous aggressive activism, which was critical of government failures and corruption, this sudden transformation raises questions about the motivations behind his change of heart.

The context of Mtambo’s political evolution further complicates his claims.

His leadership in the HRDC was marked by vehement opposition to the ruling party’s governance, mobilizing citizens to demand accountability and justice.

To now claim allegiance to the same administration he once opposed suggests a significant departure from his previous principles.

While political realignments are not uncommon, Mtambo’s case is problematic because it appears to lack transparency and consistency, which are essential for credible leadership.

Adding to the complexity is Mtambo’s public denunciation of those who associate him with anti-government protests, labeling such claims as “false and malicious.” While it is true that he officially left HRDC over five years ago and that the coalition has since developed its own leadership, Mtambo’s past activism and public image are intrinsically linked to protest politics. His attempt to erase that legacy seems more like political damage control than an honest reflection of his history.

This selective memory undermines the authenticity of his current political stance and confuses the public about his real commitments.

Furthermore, Mtambo’s assertion that the failure of the Mutharika administration would equate to failure for AFORD conveniently ignores the complex dynamics within the alliance.

AFORD’s identity and political relevance have historically been distinct, with its own ideological positions and constituencies. By conflating AFORD’s fate with DPP’s success, Mtambo risks reducing the party to a mere appendage of DPP, eroding its independent voice.

This diminishes the significance of AFORD’s political agenda and raises legitimate concerns about whether Mtambo is prioritizing party principles or personal political gain.

From a broader perspective, the Malawian public deserves clarity and consistency from their leaders.

Mtambo’s contradictory positions breed cynicism and skepticism, especially among those who supported him during his activist days.

Leadership is tested not only by the ability to adapt but also by the courage to remain principled amidst changing political landscapes.

Mtambo’s apparent abandonment of his previous stance without adequate explanation or accountability damages his credibility and leaves many questioning the authenticity of his current commitments.

It is also important to consider the implications of Mtambo’s position on Malawi’s democratic process.

By urging Malawians to stop “propaganda” and unite behind the government, he risks stifling legitimate dissent and political debate, which are vital in any healthy democracy.

His tone suggests a preference for political consolidation over inclusive governance and transparency, which could undermine efforts to hold the government accountable.

This is especially concerning given Malawi’s history of vibrant civil society activism, which Mtambo once championed.

Timothy Mtambo’s claims of full commitment to the DPP-AFORD alliance, premised on his role as AFORD Vice President, are fundamentally flawed and hypocritical.

His previous public rejection of the alliance, active campaigning against the DPP, and distancing from the coalition’s agenda expose a deep inconsistency in his political narrative.

Rather than embodying principled leadership, Mtambo’s current stance appears driven by political expediency and self-interest.

For the sake of transparency, accountability, and democratic integrity, it is crucial that these contradictions be thoroughly examined and openly discussed.

Only then can Malawians make informed judgments about the true nature of Mtambo’s political commitments and the future of the DPP-AFORD alliance.
