MANILA, Philippines — The Lechon Capital of the Philippines, also known as the La Loma district in Quezon City, is facing cases of African Swine Fever and temporary closure orders for businesses selling the well-loved roasted dish.

In a statement Thursday, November 13, the Quezon City Government directed the culling of swine in La Loma to contain the spread of the contagious disease, especially as lechon is typically served during the Christmas season.

Fourteen establishments selling lechon in Quezon City were ordered on Thursday night, November 12, to temporarily stop operations following the recommendations of the Bureau of Animal Industry, City Veterinary Department and City Health Department.

The local government assured the public that the African Swine Fever remains isolated in La Loma and that the threat does not exist in other markets in the city. Checkpoints have also been established around La Loma to control the movement of swine within the city.

While the disease is expected to impact businesses, the local government said establishments will receive support to ensure compliance with health and safety protocols, facilitating their safe reopening and continued service to the public.

“The Quezon City government continues to call on the public to cooperate and remain vigilant for the safety, cleanliness, and well-being of all consumers,” the statement read in Filipino.

The African Swine Fever does not typically affect humans and spreads only among domestic and wild pigs, meaning the virus cannot be transmitted to people. The primary concern is its impact on the pork industry.
