Prosecutors seek extra time to prepare documents

The Criminal Court has extended the deadline for prosecutors to file an appeal in the Section 112 case against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, granting them an additional month to prepare their submission.
The preliminary court announced on Friday that prosecutors now have until Dec 19 to formally lodge the appeal, delaying the original deadline set for Saturday. The request for more time was submitted on Wednesday, with prosecutors saying they needed additional preparation to complete the filing.
This is the third deadline extension granted since the Criminal Court acquitted the former prime minister in August. Judges ruled at the time that his 2015 interview with Chosun Ilbo in Seoul did not refer to the monarchy, but instead criticised military leaders and privy councillors involved in the 2014 coup that removed his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, from power.
The request for more time followed Attorney-General Ittiporn Kaewthip’s decision to proceed with an appeal, despite the Section 112 Review Committee’s recommendation to end the case at the first court. Thaksin’s family has said it is prepared to continue contesting the case in court.
