MANILA, Philippines — Junrey Dugaduga ruled the 3rd MGB (Miguel G. Belmonte) Chess Cup held recently at The STAR’s office in Sucat, Parañaque.
Dugaduga and the sports section’s Joey Villar actually finished tied for first with perfect five points each in as many rounds, but the former took first place after emerging with a higher tiebreak score.
It was the second title for Dugaduga, who also topped the second edition.
For Villar, it was his second runner-up finish after pulling the same result in the inaugural edition won by Pilipino Star Ngayon sportswriter Elech Dawa last year.
No less than STAR big boss Miguel G. Belmonte was there to award the winners.
Interestingly, Belmonte’s son, Santi, finished third overall and the best intermediate player with four points.
STAR chief finance officer Carlos Dizon was also present and hosted a two-game blitz duel between Dugaduga and Villar that the latter won, 1.5-.5.
