MANILA, Philippines — Eldrew Yulo has shown improvement by leaps and bounds, his brother Carlos said, after the younger gymnast qualified in the finals of four events in the 3rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships on Thursday.

Eldrew razzled and dazzled his way to the finals of floor exercise, vault, horizontal bars and the individual all-around exercise.

In an interview with reporters late Thursday evening, Carlos said that he saw great improvement on his brother’s performance.

“Sobrang laki po [ng growth]. Sobrang laki [ng difference] nung nakaka-training ko pa siya dito sa Philippines than noong nagpunta siya sa Japan,” the Olympic gold medalist said.

“Sobrang laki ng in-improve niya po talaga. Yung moves niya, mala-Japanese na rin po, and yung mindset niya, kung papaano niya ginagawa yung mga routines niya po, sobrang laking diperensya na po,” he added.

The younger Yulo scored 13.700 in horizontal bar, 13.750 in vault and 14.233 in the floor. At the end of the qualifications, he finished 15th with a total score of 78.332.

“Sobrang laking bagay po yun para sa kaniya na ma-experience po, especially yung ganitong opportunity, malaki talaga siyang competition. Madaming magaling po talaga na pagdating sa international, sila sila rin po, nagpapahirapan po eh,” Carlos said.

“Natutuwa lang po talaga ako sa pinapakita niya. And overall safe silang lahat, walang mga na-injuries and walang mabigat na fall po. Doon pa lang super blessed na po.”

Asked about whether or not he sees some glimpses of himself on his younger brother, the double Olympic gold medalist answered in the negative.

“Wala po eh, totally different movement and different style talaga. Happy ako dahil siya po yung next na generation. Hopefully next year, like really excited na makasama siya sa mga competitions.”

And with Eldrew now in the final stage, Carlos told him to focus.

“Kung anong tinraining niya, gawin niya lang. Mag-focus lang siya po. Sa finals, pagod na lahat. Ano na lang po talaga yun eh, mental strength yung labanan doon. Para sa akin, mag-focus siya, isipin niya kung ano talaga yung gagawin niya. And mag-enjoy po,” he said.

“Kasi, mahirap na nga po yung competition mismo and nakakakaba na rin po, so i-enjoy niya yung moment na magko-compete po siya.”

The men’s all-around finals will be on Saturday, while apparatus finals will be on Sunday and Monday.
