Consumer protection police shut down an elderly care facility in Bang Khen, Bangkok, on Friday after discovering it had been operating without a licence for six months.

The owner, Poramet, 26, who holds a master’s degree in business administration, admitted he lacked experience in the field and that the business had not been approved by the Department of Health Service Support, according to Pol Maj Gen Kongkrit Lertsitthikun, commander of the Consumer Protection Police Division.

The raid revealed that the facility operated without proper waste disposal systems, leading to infectious waste being dumped into public drains, which caused blockages that affected surrounding communities.

Mr Poramet told officers that his business charged 18,000 baht per client and that he registered the care home as a company to enhance credibility.

The case has been forwarded to investigators for legal action under the Health Establishment Act.

Pol Lt Gen Natthasak Chaowanasai, commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), said this case exemplifies an illegal operation that poses serious risks to the elderly.

As Thailand shifts to a fully aged society, the demand for quality elderly care services is rising, with some operators exploiting this need through unauthorised businesses, Pol Lt Col Natthasak added.
