Malawians living in South Africa face mistreatment, harassment

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Movement for Unity and Economic Change has raised alarm over the growing mistreatment of Malawians living in South Africa, describing the situation as shocking and deeply troubling.

The statement, signed by Chipulumutso Phiri, questioned why Malawians remain silent while their brothers and sisters across the border continue to face threats to both life and property.

The group said it is now clear that many Malawians in South Africa are in danger with some being targeted even when they possess valid working documents.

They expressed disappointment that such hostility is happening in a country that once relied heavily on the support of other African nations during the apartheid struggle.

According to the statement, it is surprising that South Africa, which recently took Israel to the International Court of Justice over alleged genocide in Gaza, is allowing similar acts of violence to unfold within its own borders.

The movement reminded Africans that the borders separating them were created during the colonial scramble for Africa and therefore Africans should consider themselves as one people.

With this historical context, the movement appealed to the Malawi Government, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to urgently engage the South African authorities.

They said government intervention is needed to find immediate ways of ensuring that Malawians in South Africa are protected and where necessary, safely brought home.

The group stressed that this is a painful moment, as even law-abiding Malawians with proper documents are still being mistreated by individuals taking the law into their own hands.

The statement concluded by urging the government of Malawi to quickly rescue its citizens in South Africa, saying this is the time they need support the most.
