ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A three-year-old boy died in a fire that struck a residential compound in this city yesterday morning.

The fire broke out shortly before 10 a.m. inside the Cariño Compound in Barangay Camino Nuevo.

Arson probers said the fire started in the room where the remains of the victim were recovered.

The victim’s grandmother, Elvie Bulkan, told probers that when the fire struck, every one fled except the victim who was trapped in the room on the second floor of their house.

“I was cooking when I heard people shouting that our house was on fire,” Bulkan said.

Probers are verifying information that the boy was seen playing match sticks before the fire broke out.
