BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Search teams are working tirelessly to recover the bodies of ten miners trapped since a mine collapse in Chitanthamapiri, Kasungu district, three days ago.
According to District Disaster Management Officer Shepherd Jere, one person has been confirmed dead, and two others are receiving medical attention in hospital.
The search operation is a collaborative effort involving council officials, police, local leaders, and Mota Engil, who have provided crucial machinery and fuel support.
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but concerns are growing over the safety of artisanal mining practices in the area.
This incident echoes a similar tragedy that occurred in October, where eight people lost their lives in a gold mine collapse in Kasungu.
Experts have long warned about the dangers of unregulated mining, citing inadequate safety measures and lack of enforcement.
The mining sector in Malawi is a significant contributor to the economy, but it remains largely unregulated, putting miners’ lives at risk.
