Revised Malawi’s 2025/26 Fiscal Plan: Tourists mandated to pay hotels in dollars, Euros as forex crisis deepens

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Peter Mutharika’s government has imposed a new rule requiring foreign tourists to settle hotel bills in hard currencies including U.S. dollars and euros, Finance Minister, Joseph Mwanamvekha, has announced.

Mwanamvekha said the move forms part of a broader strategy to bolster Malawi’s shrinking foreign exchange reserves.

He explained that the country’s reserves have come under severe pressure since the termination of the International Monetary Fund’s Extended Credit Facility earlier in the year.

In addition, Mwanamvekha disclosed that some donor funding has been cut back, further exacerbating the shortage of foreign currency.

To implement the new policy, tourism businesses will need to apply for special licences, enabling them to conduct foreign exchange transactions directly with the central bank.

These measures are intended to capture and conserve every available dollar, closing loopholes in the current system, the minister said.

Alongside this, the government is shortening the time exporters have to repatriate their foreign earnings from 120 days to 90 days.

Exporters will also be required to surrender any excess foreign currency after they have settled their import bills.

In a further tightening of the foreign currency regime, Malawi is banning short-term foreign-exchange derivatives, saying that some market players have abused these tools.

Mwanamvekha added that these derivative products will not be reintroduced until stricter regulations are in place to prevent misuse.

Analysts suggest that the policy represents a partial “dollarisation” of the hospitality sector—an approach that some hotels in Malawi have already used voluntarily to hedge against the volatility of the kwacha.

The new regulation may also have broader implications for tourism, as visitors adjust to the requirement to carry or convert to hard currency to pay for accommodation and other services.

Michael B. Jordan on Being Honored on the Same Day as Chadwick Boseman

Michael B. Jordan and late friend Chadwick Boseman received separate but special career milestones on the same day.

On Thursday, November 20, Boseman posthumously received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame while Jordan received the American Cinematheque Award later that evening.

“That was something special. Who could have planned it any better? For me to start the morning paying respects and honoring Chadwick Boseman, and to have this honor for myself on the same day,” Jordan, 38, said in an interview with Access Hollywood on Thursday. “I wouldn’t want to share with anyone else, man.”

Boseman and Jordan formed a friendship after they starred in the 2018 Marvel movie Black Panther. After starring in the superhero film, Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer and privately battled the illness for four years before his death in August 2020. He was 43 years old.

The Sinners actor told the outlet he was “full of grace and gratitude” to be recognized by people he looks up to.

Earlier that day, Jordan attended Boseman’s Walk of Fame ceremony alongside Viola Davis, Letitia Wright and Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger. Chadwick’s widow, Simone Ledward-Boseman, paid tribute to her late husband.

“In life, Chad was more than an actor, or even an artist,” Simone told the crowd. “He was a spiritual teacher, fortified by a family and close friends that kept him grounded in faith; a team that believed in him, protected him and fought for him. Colleagues that trusted his vision, that lifted him up and forged a real brotherhood: you have no idea how pivotal those moments were.”

Simone added that Chadwick was not only a talented actor but a role model that many looked up to.

“We recognize your skill and your devotion, and we cement your legacy as a hero and an icon,” she continued. “You lived with honor, and you walked with truth. You were as brilliant as you were beautiful as you were kind. We love you, we miss you, we thank you.”

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler also gave an emotional speech.

“This is something that people who maybe played ice hockey with Wayne Gretzky can attest to, people who played basketball with Michael Jordan can attest to: there’s something special about being that close to somebody that great,” Coogler, 39, said in his speech while fighting back tears. “You realize how much you don’t measure up, but you also realize how much the human body is capable of. Chad showed that every day.”

Michael B. Jordan Opens Up About Recovering From Lori Harvey Heartbreak

This was not the first time Chadwick has been honored since his passing. Months after his death, the actor received a posthumous Oscar nomination for his role as Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in 2021. Chadwick lost to Anthony Hopkins, for his role in The Father.

Jordan has kept Chackwick’s memory with him in many ways. Earlier this year, Jordan opened up about how his late friend inspired his process for getting into his Sinners character.

“I remember we were doing a camera test early on, when I was still finding my way into the characters, and Coog reminded me of what Chad did with T’Challa [in Black Panther] — how he really leaned into that character and embodied him throughout the shoot,” said Jordan in an April interview with The New York Times. “I said, ‘Say no more,’ and from then on, the performance was done in that light.”

Rumer Willis Shares Emotional Update on Dad Bruce Willis’ Dementia

Rumer Willis is keeping fans updated on her father Bruce Willis’ battle with frontotemporal dementia.

Rumer, 37, opened up about the actor’s health during an Instagram Q&A on Thursday, November 20, after a fan asked her, “How’s your dad doing?”

“People always ask me this question and I think it’s kind of a hard one to answer because the truth is that anybody with FTD is not doing great,” Rumer replied. “But he’s doing OK in terms of somebody who’s dealing with frontotemporal dementia, you know what I mean?”

Rumer continued, “The answer that I would give is I’m so happy and grateful that I still get to go and hug him. I’m so grateful that when I go over there, and I give him a hug, whether he recognizes me or not, that he can feel the love I’ve given him and I can feel it back from him. That I still see a spark of him, and he can feel the love that I’m giving.”

Rumer Willis Reflects on ‘Sad’ Father’s Day Amid Bruce Willis’ Health Battle

Bruce, 70, is currently living in a second home apart from his family with a round-the-clock care team. His wife, Emma Heming Willis, and daughters visit regularly. (The Moonlighting actor shares older daughters Rumer, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31, with ex-wife Demi Moore and younger daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, with Heming Willis, 49.)

Heming Willis first opened up about her husband’s living arrangement during an ABC special titled Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey – A Diane Sawyer Special in August.

“It was one of the hardest decisions that I’ve had to make so far,” she said during the episode. “But I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters. You know, he would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.”

It’s a topic she further reflected on in her book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, released in September.

“Giving and allowing the girls some space from Bruce also helps prepare them for his death,” Heming Willis wrote. “I know how dark and jarring that sounds, but that is the harsh reality of the world I must navigate to continue to protect our girls the best way I can.”

Heming Willis revealed how she told Mabel and Evelyn that Bruce would be moving out of their shared family home and into his own space.

“‘We’ve come to a point in Daddy’s disease where the care he requires is changing. It has to be more tailored to his every need,’ I told them. ‘And you should be in a home that is more tailored to your needs now,’” Heming Willis recalled. “’Also, Daddy would want you to have playdates, sleepovers, and more freedom than you’ve been able to have here. That would make him so happy.’”

Heming Willis described Bruce’s home as “a place they’d keep personal things like toys, arts and crafts supplies, bathing suits, pj’s, and games, and that we could go stay with him anytime they wanted.”

Bruce’s family revealed he was first diagnosed with aphasia, a language disorder in March 2022. The following year, they announced his condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia, a progressive brain disease that impacts communication, behavior and mobility.

Kelsea Ballerini and Chase Stokes’ Relationship Timeline

Kelsea Ballerini and Chase Stokes navigated many ups and downs in their two-year relationship.

The country singer and the Outer Banks star were first linked in January 2023 after they were spotted together at the College Football Playoff National Championship in Los Angeles.

Ballerini confirmed the romance one month later during an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, revealing that she had slid into Chase’s DMs. “His handle is ‘hichasestokes’ and I just said, ‘Hi Chase Stokes,’” she shared.

I Watched Prime Video’s New No. 1 Thriller That’s Better Than ‘The White Lotus’

From The White Lotus to Patricia Highsmith‘s Ripley books, I can’t get enough of rich people being made to suffer.

Prime Video’s newest show, Malice, is right up that same alley. It stars Jack Whitehall as a young man who ingratiates himself with a wealthy family for nefarious purposes.

It’s a delightful and dramatic slice of soap opera thriller, and Watch With Us thinks it should be your next binge-watch.

Here’s why I think Malice is better than The White Lotus and most “rich people are bad” mystery shows streaming right now.

5 Most Anticipated Prime Video Movies and Shows of Fall 2025, Ranked

It’s a Little Bit Like ‘Saltburn’ and ‘The White Lotus’ — Only Better

If the past few years are any indication, pop culture content that depicts awful rich people getting their just desserts is what the people want to see — let’s not think too hard about why that is. At any rate, Malice follows Jack Whitehall’s Adam, a tutor who worms his way into being a male nanny (or “manny”) for the much wealthier Tanner family.

The Tanners are led by businessman Jamie (David Duchovny), who is not the best dad to his kids, Dexter (Phoenix Laroche), Kit (Harry Gilby) and April (Teddie Allen), although he still seems quite hot and heavy with wife Nat (Carice Van Houten). If you enjoyed movies like Saltburn or shows like Ripley and The White Lotus, there’s a lot here to enjoy. Gorgeous locales, a family with money-induced brain-rot and a suspicious little guy intent on getting revenge against them.

And yes, while The White Lotus is great, season 3 was a major letdown and left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. Malice is even better than that season because it sets up an intriguing mystery and delivers on it. There’s no false red herrings, no obvious suspect and no loose narratives that lead to nowhere — instead, it tells a relatively straightforward revenge plot with an anti-hero you root for.

David Duchovny Plays a Jerk You Can’t Help But Like

One thing Watch With Us is gonna do is we’re gonna watch a show starring David Duchovny. Most people are familiar with Duchovny from his iconic role as Fox Mulder on The X-Files, but the guy is a fantastic actor, and funny too. He particularly excels at playing charming or impish a-holes but in a very nonchalant way, and Duchovny is in fine form, conveying this type of personality in Malice with plenty of wry humor.

Jamie Tanner is a dick, and yet it’s hard to hate him, partly because he is given some redeeming qualities. But a lot of that redemption can be chalked up to the way Duchovny plays him. Duchovny also does a great job at evoking the cruelty and carelessness of men who are so rich that petty irritations still manage to get the better of them, despite nearly all their problems otherwise being solved with their money.

It’s Fun to Watch Horrible Rich People Suffer

Watching a show like Malice can be incredibly cathartic, because while it’s so delightful to watch horrible people get what’s coming to them, it’s more fun when they’re wealthy. People who have a lot of money often feel like their wealth shields them from retribution for bad behavior, or even emboldens it — meanwhile, the rest of us, the lowly proletariat, just have to sit back and take the abuse.

Even though Adam’s motives are left unclear for much of the show, it’s entertaining to watch him spin webs, lay traps and just basically terrorize the horrible Tanner family (Jamie, in particular) in very quiet and calculated ways. He tosses Jamie’s passport into the ocean, poisons food and even flirts with Nat to try to disturb the sanctity of Jamie and Nat’s marriage. Malice combines audience fascination with luxurious lives and the nagging desire to see someone set it all on fire.

The Show Keeps Things Vague Until the Very End

From the jump, Adam is very calculated in his plan to gain the trust of the Tanner family, so we know that he is motivated by a grudge. At one point early on, Adam stands over Jamie, drunk on the ground, and says, “I could kill you right now if I wanted. But I’m not going to do that. Because I want you to suffer, just like I did.” For what reasons Adam suffered remains unspoken until closer to the season’s conclusion.

Now That ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Is Over, Watch These 5 Great Shows

Keeping Adam’s motivations unclear might frustrate some viewers, but it also allows for Malice to keep people hooked and guessing until the very end — when Adam’s plot is finally revealed in full. Why reveal all the cards so quickly? And at only six episodes, there’s not much waiting to do either. Malice is fantastically bingeable, and the reveal is well worth the wait.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Standard Bank Joy of the Arts initiative has burst into life with two key sponsorships on music and theatre unveiled this week.

On Wednesday the bank rolled out a K12 million sponsorship for the Malawi Music Business Summit in Lilongwe and will proceed to unveil another K25 million package today for the Unima Theatre Festival weekend in Zomba.

Head of Brand and Marketing Tamanda N’gombe said the Joy of the Arts, now in its second is making tremendous progress in transforming Malawi’s arts and culture scene.

“We are into our second full year of the Joy of the Arts program to demonstrate that this initiative is about creating a uniting platform where Malawian artists connect, learn, and inspire the next generation while also making a living. By linking corporate responsibility with cultural vibrancy, Standard Bank is turning Joy of the Arts into a catalyst for social cohesion and economic growth,” she said.

She said the bank partnered Hills Capital, an artist management firm for the Malawi Music Business Summit to underline its commitment towards helping the country’s music industry become a force to reckon in Africa.

“We believe our music industry has great potential and elevating this sector for artists, music producers, song writers & talent managers is exactly what we need to activate our country’s productive sectors in Agriculture, Tourism, Energy and Mining to which music adds value,” said Ng’ombe.

She said overall the Joy of the Arts initiative is designed to embrace the diversity and lure of Malawi’s vibrant art forms in music, the visual arts, performing arts and drama, media, tourism, science and culture.

“The first Music Business Summit marks a turning point for Malawi’s creative sector. We’re grateful to Standard Bank for choosing to become a key partner in this journey, as their support reflects a genuine belief in the potential artists creating economic value,” Phondo added.

Inside the first Malawi Music Business Summit, which was held at BICC in Lilongwe were sessions on music publishing, distribution, financial fitness, foreign currency management, and a global market masterclass.

Veep Ansah sets firm expectations for disability inclusion as MACODA Flag Week Begins

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Vice President Jane Ansah has delivered a decisive call for practical progress on disability inclusion as she inaugurated the 2025 MACODA Flag Week in Lilongwe.

Rather than treating the ceremony as a routine annual tradition, she positioned it as a moment for renewed commitment and clearer accountability across all sectors.

Dr Ansah emphasised that this year’s theme—advancing disability rights through both reporting and action—must serve as a direct challenge to policymakers and institutions to abandon symbolic gestures and pursue tangible outcomes.

She made it clear that Malawi cannot afford an approach that prioritises statements over results if it aspires to build a genuinely inclusive society.

At the heart of her message was the conviction that national development must benefit every citizen, regardless of disability, gender, or background.

She stressed that this vision should be reflected consistently in both policy formulation and programme implementation.

Reflecting on the recent enactment of the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2024 and the adoption of the National Disability Policy, the Vice President noted that such milestones offer a strong policy framework.

However, she warned that these achievements will remain largely symbolic unless they are enforced with diligence and seriousness.

She urged duty bearers to ensure that the legislation translates into meaningful improvements in the daily lives of persons with disabilities.

Dr Ansah directed local councils to outline precisely how they will integrate disability considerations into the utilisation of public resources.

She pointed particularly to funds such as the Constituency Development Fund and economic empowerment allocations, insisting that persons with disabilities must be deliberately included in these financial interventions.

She argued that disability inclusion should never be left to chance but must be a planned and central element of development initiatives.

The Vice President also underscored the importance of supporting learners with disabilities through the free secondary education programme.

She reiterated that economic hardship must not be allowed to block educational opportunities for disabled pupils.

Turning to agriculture, she highlighted that the reintroduced FISP remains vital for vulnerable households, including those with disabilities.

She urged agricultural and district authorities to ensure that disabled farmers are prioritised and not overlooked when distributing subsidised inputs.

Looking ahead, Dr Ansah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to embedding disability rights within the broader Malawi 2063 vision.

She noted that disability inclusion forms a fundamental part of the country’s long-term development aspirations and must remain central in national planning.

She acknowledged the operational and financial challenges faced by MACODA and appealed to the Ministries of Finance and Trade to support viable initiatives such as the Bangwe Weaving Factory.

To ensure the factory’s sustainability, she encouraged government institutions to procure textiles from the facility, thereby strengthening economic opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Dr Ansah also stressed that accessible infrastructure is essential for real inclusion, noting that progressive policies mean little if public spaces remain physically restrictive.

She called upon construction and transport authorities to make accessibility a standard requirement rather than an optional feature.

In closing, the Vice President thanked participants for their commitment before officially launching the 2025 MACODA Flag Week.

Her address not only outlined clear expectations for disability inclusion but also set a tone of urgency, responsibility, and long-term commitment.

Through her remarks, she positioned disability rights as a vital component of Malawi’s social and economic advancement.
