Tanzania’s sham election: A coup d’état in plain sight

The elections in Tanzania are nothing more than a symbolic exercise in futility, a desperate attempt by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to legitimize her stranglehold on power.

The deck has been stacked against the opposition from the beginning, with the ruling party using every trick in the book to crush dissent and deny the people their right to choose their leaders.

The arrest and prosecution of CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu on trumped-up treason charges is a stark reminder of the lengths to which Suluhu will go to maintain her grip on power.

Lissu’s popularity and potential to win the presidency posed a significant threat to Suluhu’s rule, and the charges against him are clearly designed to eliminate him from the race.

The timing of the charges, just as Tanzanians were about to go to the polls, is a brazen attempt to intimidate and silence the opposition.

It’s a move that has been widely condemned by human rights organizations and observers, who see it for what it is – a blatant attempt to rig the outcome of the election.

But Lissu’s persecution is just the tip of the iceberg.

Suluhu’s regime has been marked by a series of high-profile killings, including bishops who have dared to speak out against her undemocratic tendencies.

The message is clear: anyone who opposes Suluhu will be silenced, one way or another.

The African Union and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) must urgently step in to address the escalating crisis in Tanzania.

Their role as regional bodies dedicated to promoting democracy, human rights, and political stability in Africa compels them to act decisively against the blatant erosion of democratic norms witnessed in these elections.

Failure to intervene risks not only the further entrenchment of authoritarianism in Tanzania but also sets a dangerous precedent for other nations in the region.

The international community should demand transparency, the release of political prisoners like Tundu Lissu, and the establishment of an independent electoral commission to ensure free and fair elections.

Moreover, there should be increased monitoring and observation missions during election periods and swift consequences for any violations of democratic principles.

Civil society within Tanzania also needs support and protection to continue their vital work in holding the government accountable.

Ultimately, without robust regional and international pressure, Tanzania’s democratic institutions will continue to weaken, undermining the will of its people and the future stability of the nation.

The time for complacency has passed; urgent, coordinated action is required to safeguard democracy in Tanzania.

Women in media urged to stay objective, amplify females’ voices in governance

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson Annabell Mtalimanja has called on women in the media to maintain objectivity and professionalism in their work to help the public stay well-informed.

Speaking at the Association of Women in Media (AWOME) annual general meeting in Salima, Mtalimanja emphasized the importance of women’s leadership beyond elections to ensure long-term progress and national development.

“Women’s participation in governance is vital for national development,” Mtalimanja said, adding that , “As women in the media, it is crucial that you remain objective and professional in your work, providing accurate and unbiased information to the public.”

Mtalimanja’s remarks were echoed by AWOME board member Jane Gogodous, who urged women in the media to work towards ensuring that women’s voices are heard and represented in governance.

“As women in the media, we have a responsibility to amplify women’s voices and promote their participation in decision-making processes,” Gogodous said.

The two-day conference, themed “Beyond the Ballot: Sustaining Women’s Voices in Governance,” brought together women in the media to discuss their role in promoting women’s leadership and participation in governance.

The conference provided a platform for women in the media to share experiences, challenges, and strategies for promoting women’s voices in governance.

Mtalimanja’s call for objectivity and professionalism in the media is particularly significant in the context of Malawi’s democratic development.

As the country continues to navigate the complexities of democratic governance, the role of the media in promoting transparency and accountability is crucial.

The conference highlighted the importance of women’s participation in governance and the media’s role in promoting their voices and leadership.

As AWOME continues to advocate for women’s rights and participation in governance, the organization’s efforts will be crucial in promoting a more inclusive and representative democracy in Malawi.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-As Tanzania prepares to go to the polls today Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, has called on all political leaders and their supporters to respect the will of the people and act responsibly through the legal means provided by the laws of Tanzania.

In a statement issued on the eve of the polls, Mutharika expressed confidence in the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) deployed to Tanzania, led by Malawi’s former Speaker of Parliament, Richard Msowoya.

The mission aims to facilitate a peaceful, credible, and inclusive electoral process.

Frankie Muniz Says He Hasn’t Spoken to Hilary Duff in 22 Years

Frankie Muniz is ready to set the record straight on where his relationship with former costar Hilary Duff currently stands.

“There’s another story I haven’t told, and I don’t know if I want to tell it, but maybe I will. It’s been a long time,” Muniz, 39, shared on a September episode of “The Joe Vulpis Podcast” hosted by Joe Vulpis. “I was on the set of Lizzie McGuire, and I was in Hilary’s dressing room and her mom was there. Her mom was — I’m going to say — the epitome of a stage mom, momager. … Hilary was so cool, we had an awesome relationship, but her mom was super intense. My mom was the opposite.”

After Lizzie McGuire premiered in 2001, Duff, 38, asked Muniz — who was starring in Malcolm in the Middle at the time — to appear on her Disney Channel show as himself.

The actor said that Duff was one of the “first friends” he met after moving to Los Angeles, but their friendship was not able to stand the test of time after the actor claimed Duff’s mom questioned his career plans.

‘Lizzie McGuire’ Cast: Where Are They Now?

“Her mom was like, ‘Do you know what you’re doing this summer? What are you doing this summer?’” he recalled. “And I go, ‘Oh, I’m filming this movie where I’m playing like a junior James Bond. It’s called Agent Cody Banks.’”

When Duff’s mom questioned if the movie’s team was looking for an actress, Muniz stayed mum but knew “I had the say of who the girl was going to be.”

Although he initially thought Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk was going to take the role, he was surprised to learn Duff booked the film one day later.

“Needless to say, I wasn’t thrilled about it. And not because I didn’t want it to be Hilary,” he said. “I don’t know how much I want to say. I’m trying to think about it because I’ve already said way too much.”

Although Agent Cody Banks was released in 2003 and was a hit at the box office, the movie’s leading characters didn’t exactly stay close.

“I’ve never talked to Hilary since the last day of filming,” Muniz said. “I’ve not said one word to her since then. So that’s the truth of that. No one knows about my Hilary Duff story.”

Us Weekly has reached out to Duff’s reps for comment.

To this day, Muniz said he doesn’t hold any ill feelings towards the former Disney Channel star. In fact, he said he regrets “not just continuing to be friends with her because we had a great friendship for such a long time.”

“I would love to catch up with her,” Muniz added. “I would love to even talk about that because I’m sure she doesn’t know any of that happened.”

Hilary Duff Through the Years: Disney, Motherhood and More

More than two decades after first finding success in Hollywood, both Muniz and Duff remain booked and busy.

Muniz is expected to star in the upcoming Malcolm in the Middle revival.

As for Duff, she recently signed a deal with Atlantic Records to release new music. The “So Yesterday” singer also has a docuseries in the works that will document her long-awaited musical return and personal journey.

Cynthia Erivo ‘Never Daydreamed’ About Reconnecting With Estranged Dad

Cynthia Erivo is opening up about being estranged from her father.

“I don’t know what my life would be like if he was still around, and I can’t say whether it would be better or worse,” Erivo, 38, said during her Harper’s Bazaar interview published on Tuesday, October 28. “Better not to find out. I’ve never daydreamed about that, because it’s not going to happen. And the life that I have, I am so happy in it.”

Erivo’s interview shared in the November 2025 issue comes ahead of her memoir, Simply More: A Book for Anyone Who Has Been Told They’re Too Much, set to be released on Tuesday, November 18.

She discussed her family dynamics in the book, like being raised by her mom, Edith, in London. The Wicked star’s father left her and her sister when she was 16 and “disowned” them, according to the Harper’s Bazaar interview.

Will Kristin Chenoweth Be in ‘Wicked: For Good?’ She Says …

Erivo has previously discussed their strained relationship in a 2021 interview, sharing that the last time they saw each other was at a cousin’s wedding more than a decade ago.

“This is me admitting that there are things that he’s missed and I’m sad that he’s missed them,” she told Glossary magazine at the time, discussing the song “You’re Not Here,” which was written about their strained relationship.

“There are things that he’s going to miss and I’m sad that he’s going to miss them,” she added. “There is a part of me that wishes I could have my dad in my life. But there’s also a part of me that’s actually very comfortable because I’ve written this, knowing that he’s not going to be a part of my life at all.”

Erivo said at the time that she has no issue being “vulnerable” and sharing the story about her family publicly.

“I don’t know if I could have written anything that wasn’t honest,” Erivo admitted. “I want people to know that it is OK to talk about those things. I want them to find solace and comfort in my music. The goal has only ever been to be truthful.”

Is ‘Wicked’ Streaming Yet?

The same is to be said for her upcoming memoir.

“I have felt so supported through all of the wonderful and new things I’ve been able to share, and I thought to myself, maybe I can help someone else move through some of the things that they have going on in their lives,” Erivo wrote on Instagram in June, when announcing her memoir. “So this book is to help anyone who wants to become even more of the person they are meant to become.”

The title, she explained to Harper’s Bazaar, came from the speech Erivo gave while accepting the GLAAD Media Award in May.

“In their quiet solitude, that’s still a measure of rebellion and still deserves a little light,” she told the magazine. “What I wrote about was [that] those of us who are in the light, who are walking around with our lanterns shining bright, should just change the direction of the lanterns and shine it back on people who don’t know where their path is yet.”

Blue Ivy Carter, 13, Is Mom Beyonce’s Twin in a Pink Dress at the Angel Ball

Blue Ivy Carter was the spitting image of her famous mom, Beyoncé, while wearing a glamorous pink dress at a star-studded event.

Beyoncé, 44, took to Instagram to share a sweet moment between her own mother, Tina Knowles, and daughter Blue Ivy, 13, on Monday, October 27.

In the pic, Blue Ivy wore a head-to-toe pastel pink look while celebrating Knowles, 71, who was given a philanthropy award at the Annual Angel Ball at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

“Congrats Mom on your philanthropy award at the Angel Ball tonight ❤️,” Beyoncé captioned the post, which fans thought was actually Blue Ivy’s writing from behind the phone. Social media users gushed about Blue Ivy looking just like the chart-topping performer in the comments section.

“Blue is looking like young B!!!” one wrote, while another added, “So this is not Beyoncé at 13?” A third commented, “Blue is really Beyoncé’s doppelgänger.”

Her outfit featured a bubblegum satin dress equipped with a square neckline and thick straps. The corset bodice cascaded into an ankle-length pencil skirt. Blue Ivy added even more glamour to her look with a plume shawl, which she wrapped around her arms while walking into the venue. The dancer styled her outfit with a diamond necklace and strappy kitten heels.

Blue Ivy’s makeup was just as stunning as her look, including manicured eyebrows, winged eyeliner, long lashes and sparkly eyeshadow. She tied her makeup together with lined, pink lips and twisted her highlighted hair into an updo.

Knowles looked just as stylish as her granddaughter, whom Beyoncé shares with husband Jay Z. (Beyoncé and Jay-Z, 55, are also the parents of twins Sir and Rumi, 8.)

Beyoncé’s mom, for her part, looked regal in a red velvet dress featuring a one-shoulder strap and cutout over her chest. The design was finished with a sheer column skirt with delicate floral beading and more velvet, creating an A-line silhouette. She accessorized with red gloves, a diamond ring and matching earrings.

Tina complemented her ensemble with a full beat, including bronzed eyeshadow, wispy lashes and bright pink lips. Her caramel mane was parted to the side and styled in voluminous curls.

Not only do Beyoncé and Blue Ivy look identical, but they also enjoy hitting the stage together. Blue Ivy traveled alongside her mom during the Renaissance World Tour in 2023 and the Cowboy Carter Tour, which concluded in July 2025.

In her Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, Blue Ivy was seen working even harder to improve her dance moves after seeing online criticism.

According to the New York Times, Blue Ivy’s performance on tour was only supposed to be a one-time occurrence, and even still, Beyoncé was protective over her little one.

“She told me she was ready to perform, and I told her no,” she explained.

After making her debut, Blue Ivy appeared in every show during her Cowboy Carter Tour. Rumi also walked on stage as her mom sang “Protector” and posed with the duo.

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour kicked off in April 2025 in Inglewood, California, and concluded in Paradise, Nevada, on July 26.
