By Edwin Mbewe

CALIFORNIA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawian heroine Temwa Chawinga who plays for Kansas City Current and Scorchers on Wednesday once again shined making her name the Americans household talk as she scooped USA’s National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Most valuable Player during the league’s awards gala in San Jose, California for the second consecutive season.

Chawinga beat four other nominees, including teammate Bia Zaneratto, San Diego’s Delphine Cascarino, Gotham’s Esther Gonzalez and North Carolina’s Manaka Matsukubu after a weighted voting process involving players, coaches, the media and fans.

Speaking after winning the accolade, Temwa described her achievement as a dream come true “Thank you so much to my fellow players, coaches and the fans who voted for me.

It’s a big dream to be here to win this twice in two seasons. I really appreciate it”,

“To the other finalists in this category, all the best, next year is also another chapter. We just have to move forward”, she added.

The accolade marked yet another milestone for Temwa in her second season which also saw her defending the Golden Boot with fifteen (15) goals.

With this latest award, she becomes the first player in the league’s history to win back-to-back Most Valuable Player accolades.

National Women’s Football Association Chairperson Adellaide Migogo said other players should learn from Temwa’s hard-working spirit.

“Temwa has shown that in life we should not be contented with what we have already achieved. Last season, she won two awards. This season she has managed to defend them. Temwa was not contented with what she achieved last season and wanted to do more.

“This is what other players can learn from her. They shouldn’t get satisfied with what you have today. Always work hard to achieve more in life”, She added.

In the 2025 season Temwa Chawinga managed to score 15 goals and three assists in 23 games.

She became the fastest player to reach 25 regular-Season goals, doing so in just 34 matches.

She then broke another record by reaching 30 goals in only forty (40) games.

The Scorchers star also became the first to score in her first four regular-Season matches against two different clubs and again by netting in seven straight matches.

Six of her 15 goals were match-winners, tying her own league record, while her eight -game scoring streak matched another benchmark she set last season.

Her heroics helped power the Kansas City Current to a record -breaking campaign, including league highs in points at 65 with 21 wins and the club’s first-ever NWSL Shield in which she scored her 13th goal.

The industrious campaign saw her being named NWSL player of the Month in March and May.

Temwa’s impact was also felt on the global stage as she earned her first -ever Balloon D’Or nomination, finishing 17th.

She also secured nominations for both CAF Women’s player of the year and Best FIFA Women’s player.

MPs raise concerns over council access meetings

By Zakeyu Mamba

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Members of Parliament (MPs) have expressed growing concerns over being barred from attending and speaking at local council meetings, raising questions about oversight and accountability at the local government level.

MPs Yona Dadawisa Nkandawire and Richard Chimwendo Banda brought the matter to Parliament on 20th November 2025, during ongoing deliberations in Lilongwe.

They highlighted instances where some local councils have imposed restrictions on MPs, limiting their ability to participate fully in council proceedings.

Banda reported that, although he was allowed to attend a council session, he was denied the right to speak, which he described as a challenge to Parliament’s role in ensuring transparency in local governance.

He emphasized that such restrictions undermine MPs’ ability to monitor the activities of local councils effectively.

Responding to the concerns, Local Government Minister Ben Phiri stated that MPs do have the right to inquire about the use of council funds, stressing that oversight by Parliament is essential to promote accountability.

However, he clarified that a court ruling currently prevents MPs from participating in voting during council meetings, which limits their direct influence over council decisions but does not negate their oversight functions.

Speaker of Parliament Sameer Sulemani confirmed that Parliament is actively addressing the matter.

He indicated that measures are being considered to ensure MPs can carry out their oversight responsibilities effectively without infringing on the legal frameworks governing local councils.

The debate underscores ongoing tensions between Parliament and local councils regarding transparency, governance, and the monitoring of public funds.

MPs’ concerns reflect a broader demand for strengthened accountability mechanisms, particularly in ensuring that local authorities operate openly and in line with legal standards.

As the discussions continue, the issue highlights the delicate balance between local council autonomy and parliamentary oversight, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between different arms of government to protect public interest and maintain good governance practices.

Cole and Chelsea Deboer ‘Don’t Get Sick of Each Other’ Working on HGTV Show

HGTV stars Cole and Chelsea Deboer (née Houska) have mastered the art of mixing business and pleasure.

“We actually don’t get sick of each other,” Chelsea, 34, told Us Weekly exclusively at the 2025 CMA Awards in Nashville on Wednesday, November 19. “We just have so much fun. We always do little lunch dates [so] we’re kind of lucky that we get to be together so much.”

Cole, 37, concurred, adding that balancing working together is their “most asked question.”

“This is my best friend, so why not work together and do all the things?” Cole told Us.

Chelsea Houska and Cole DeBoer’s HGTV Show ‘Down Home Fab’: Everything to Know

The couple — who met at a gas station in South Dakota in 2014 before tying the knot in October 2016 — launched their HGTV show, Down Home Fab, which centers on their home renovation and design business in South Dakota, in early 2023. They have since aired three seasons.

“One thing I’ve learned is that it’s OK to have a team and give them things to do rather than trying to do everything yourself,” Cole told Us of what he’s taken away from the process of the show.

For her part, Chelsea said she has learned the art of “accepting help” and gaining confidence.

“Coming into the HGTV world, we were new to the game, and we were just new to remodeling in general,” she told Us. “Getting that confidence over the last three years, I’m like, OK, now we’re here and we deserve to be here.”

She continued: “I’m such an HGTV fan, so the fact that we get to meet the people I’ve watched on TV, I’m like, ‘This is so cool.’”

Yet, Down Home Fab isn’t the couple’s first rodeo when it comes to reality TV.

Chelsea got her start on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant and subsequently Teen Mom 2 when she had her first daughter, Aubree, with then-boyfriend Adam Lind. Following their split, she sparked a romance with Cole, which fans followed along on Teen Mom 2. (She ultimately left the show after 10 seasons in 2020.)

Chelsea and Cole went on to welcome son Watson Cole in January 2017, daughter Layne in August 2018 and daughter Walker June in January 2021.

In addition to their home renovation series, the couple also have a brick-and-mortar store in South Dakota called Down Home by DeBoers.

“It’s a little western-y vibe, but I like a modern western-y mix,” Chelsea told Us of their business. “We’ve got cow hides everywhere, and so we love it. We just launched online and it’s been amazing.”

The pair donned their very best western chic looks for the CMAs, with Chelsea calling her maroon dress “a little Ella Langley moment.”

“I wanted a cool vibe,” she told Us. “I’m into feathers and stuff right now.”

Cole, on the other hand, kept things simple and sleek with a black suit.

“I had several [outfits], but she had to decide what she wore first, and then I just picked based off hers,” he told Us.

Million Dollar Listing’s Tracy Tutor Explains ‘RHOBH’ Casting Rumors

Million Dollar Listing’s Tracy Tutor is setting the record straight on how close she came to securing a diamond on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

“That was really heavily talked about, and I never said boo about it,” Tutor, 50, exclusively shared with Us Weekly while celebrating Mauricio Umansky’s new partnership with ARI. “I’m not sure where that rumor mill started other than, like, a year or two ago, Andy [Cohen] asked me on Watch What Happens Live — I think a fan had asked.”

During a January 2023 appearance, Tutor was in fact asked if she would ever consider joining the Bravo reality show.

“I was born and raised in LA. I know a lot of the women on the show,” she said. “I love them all — not equally — and I think I could bring a little heat.”

So how close did Tutor get to joining the show?

“There was some chatter, some discussion about it,” she told Us at ARI’s Beverly Hills store on Tuesday, November 18. “But they had already sort of, I guess, figured out how they were going to run their season. And I think they have a great cast.”

Tutor expressed her excitement at Rachel Zoe joining the show for season 15. Amanda Frances is also a newcomer, while Natalie Swanston Fuller will be a “friend” of the ladies.

“They have Rachel Zoe this year. She’s amazing,” Tutor said. “It’s great to have her back on Bravo because I used to watch her however many years ago that was. I’m aging myself. They need to shake it up a little bit, right?”

For more than five seasons, Tutor appeared on Bravo’s real estate show titled Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles. Although the show was put on pause in March, the realtor remains close with her costars, including Josh Flagg and Josh Altman.

“Josh Flagg and I spend a lot of time together. We travel together. We’re doing a little YouTube funny interview series together,” she revealed. “We have a blast. I haven’t seen Altman in a bit, but I love him to death.”

While cameras may be down, Tutor continues to find success in the real estate market while working with Compass.

After news broke that Chrishell Stause was leaving Selling Sunset, Us had to ask if Tutor would ever consider starring in the Netflix series.

“F*** no,” she said with a laugh. “First of all, I’d have to go to the Oppenheim Group. That would be a problem. By the way, Jason [Oppenheim] would be like, ‘You’re a lot, Tracy.’ He’d have a run for his money, I’d tell you that much. But I love those boys.”

For now, Tutor is happy with the life she is living as she continues raising two daughters.

“Life is good right now,” she explained. “They’re little savvy little women, and they have attitudes, and they have souls, and they’re successful, and they’re getting great grades. I just got back from a listing in Montecito. Things are good on the work front and dating, I’m seeing someone, so we’ll see if I launch that soon or not.”

Mutharika deeply tightens screws against public officers’ unnecessary international travels

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Peter Mutharika’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-lead Government has tightened rules on international travel for senior public officers, directing all officials at Grade C — including heads of statutory bodies and state-owned enterprises — to fly economy class.

The directive is contained in an addendum issued on Thursday, November 20, 2025 by Chief Secretary Justin Saidi.

The addendum aims at strengthening the expenditure controls already in place for the 2025/26 financial year.

The circular has made it clear that no exemptions will be allowed.

“Travel bookings and related expenditure must comply with existing procurement and financial procedures and be supported by original documentation for audit purposes,” reads the communication in part.

Saidi however warned, “Any breach, according to the notice, will be treated as non-compliance and may attract administrative action”.

The development comes barely weeks after Saidi also made announcement in which government froze recruitment and promotions, halted the purchase of new vehicles and high-value assets, cut fuel entitlements for ministers and senior officials by 30 percent, and tightened controls on foreign travel, including limits on delegation sizes and removal of government top-ups for donor-funded trips — all aimed at managing pressure on the national budget.

The measures, according to Saidi take effect immediately and will apply throughout the financial year.

Many social and economic governance experts have lauded Mutharika for living within the means amid Malawi’s economic challenges including shortages of forex, high inflation and among others.

Senior MDF officers granted injunction against deployment

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-High Court Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda on Thursday granted five senior Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officers an injunction, retraining government from redeploying them to civilian institutions.

Affected Major Generals including Chikunkha Soko, Saiford Kalisha, Swithan Mchungula, Kakhuta Banda and Brigadier General Harold Dzoole.

Judiciary spokesperson Ruth Mputeni disclosed that the injunction will operate as a stay of the redeployment pending judicial review.

The senior MDF officers were redeployed to work as directors of security at Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom), National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma), Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) and Electricity Generation Company (Egenco).

The are arguing that the deployment is against Defence Act that only MDF council is mandated for such decisions not head of state or Chief Secretary.

Is former President Lazarus Chakwera still politically relevant

It all started like a rumor prior to 2014 elections that Lazarus Chakwera would quit his pastoral career and venture into active politics.

Indeed after losing twice consecutively 2014 and 2019, Chakwera ascended to power with the courtesy of Tonse Alliance.

Many Malawians had a gargantuan hope that the Tonse Alliance would deliver what was promised bearing in mind that it was composed of experienced political gurus including former President, Joyce Banda and former vice president, Saulos Chilima among others.

Unfortunately, on 16 September 2025, Malawians decided to boot out Chakwera regime in preference to Peter Mutharika due to escalating high prices of goods and services, scarcity of fuel, forex and food, and most importantly, rampant corruption, among others.

Although many Malawians hold the view that Chakwera leadership grossly fell short of their aspirations, one question persistently lingers, is Chakwera still politically relevant?

This question can be answered from both the national and international point of view.

Firstly, at national level, it is no longer a secret that Chakwera was unanimously endorsed as the leader of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) even after his presidential election loss this year.

The truth of the matter is that all members of MCP who were elected at a convention still maintain their positions till 2029 regardless of whether they lost 2025 general elections or not. So Chakwera is not an exception.

Secondly, according to Malawi Constitution, Chakwera is still politically relevant.

So far, Chakwera has served one term as the President of Malawi. The Malawi Constitution therefore empowers him to stand again for the second term.

It must be noted at this time that supremacy of the Malawi Constitution entails that any law, rule, regulation or guideline that contradicts it must be rendered invalid.

For instance, even if MCP constitution may bar Chakwera, he is still mandated by Malawi Constitution to stand again unless he voluntarily decides not to.

Furthermore, as President Mutharika will not stand in 2030, because he will have completed his maximum two presidential terms, Chakwera is likely to contend with weaker candidates such as Atupele Muluzi and Dalitso Kabambe.

At this time, Chakwera will have an added advantage over others of having an experience of being the President of Malawi before.

Thirdly, over a million people who voted for Chakwera in the just ended presidential elections prove a point that he is still politically relevant.

Moving forward to the international scene, the appointment of Chakwera by Commonwealth to lead an envoy on peacekeeping negotiations in Tanzania signals his political relevance at a broader level.

Indeed the international community has noted that Chakwera showed statesmanship when he conceded defeat to the incumbent president Mutharika even before official results were announced by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

Some critics contend that Chakwera was chosen for that position simply because Malawi is a close neighbor of Tanzania. However, Tanzania does not share its borders with Malawi only. Therefore, it is an honor that Commonwealth saw it fit to dress Chakwera in such prestigious robes.

Some schools of thought surmise that Chakwera’s background of being a reverend and President of Assemblies of God for over 25 years puts him at an advantage of resolving disputes among various warring factions. This sounds logical too.

Despite this honour, it is on record that human rights activists in Tanzania rejected Chakwera on the basis that Chakwera government was ineffective and corrupt. They also cited that it is premature to clinch negotiation deals when some incidents of killings are still under investigation.

Much as Chakwera government was allegedly involved in corrupt deals, there is no evidence that proves Chakwera was directly involved in corruption.

Furthermore, peace deals do not exonerate wrong doers from facing justice. Therefore, it is possible to agree on ending conflict thereby halting escalating human violations further while investigations are still underway.

Finally, based on the foregoing discourse, it sounds logical to conclude that former president Chakwera is still politically relevant both at national and international level.
