After Four decades in power, is Paul Biya’s grip on Cameroon slipping?

…..As opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary declares victory, Cameroon faces mounting uncertainty under the world’s oldest ruler, whose hold on power shows both resilience and strain.

Cameroon stands at a defining crossroads, its political atmosphere thick with anxiety and expectation following the country’s fiercely contested 2025 presidential election.

For the people of Cameroon, the moment feels both familiar and unsettling — another tense post-election period under the 92-year-old Paul Biya, the world’s oldest serving president and one of Africa’s longest-ruling leaders.

Biya, who first assumed office in 1982, has outlasted generations of politicians and weathered countless storms.

Yet this election has renewed speculation that his four-decade hold on power may finally be showing signs of strain.

The uncertainty gripping the nation stems from opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s dramatic declaration of victory — a bold move that has electrified his supporters and rattled the establishment.

Bakary claims to have secured the people’s mandate, describing the outcome as a turning point for a nation yearning for new leadership and a break from the political stagnation that has defined the Biya era.

His declaration has reignited divisions across the country, fueling both hope and hostility in equal measure.

For many Cameroonians, the announcement symbolizes the growing frustration with decades of authoritarian rule, rising economic hardship, and an unresolved conflict in the English-speaking regions that has scarred the nation.

The official results are still pending, but both Biya’s ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) and Bakary’s camp have already proclaimed victory, setting the stage for a potential showdown.

The streets of Yaoundé, Douala, and Bamenda echo with a mix of celebration and fear as citizens brace for the possible fallout.

Reports of isolated clashes and heightened security have only deepened the tension, as many worry that the political standoff could spiral into unrest.

Biya’s staying power has long been anchored in his mastery of political control — a delicate balance of patronage, repression, and caution that has allowed him to outmaneuver rivals for over four decades.

But the 2025 campaign revealed a leader increasingly removed from the people he governs. His rare public appearances and frail demeanor have raised questions about his health and his ability to lead a nation yearning for dynamism.

Observers say the Biya regime’s reliance on loyal military and bureaucratic networks has maintained order but also stifled reform, leaving the political system stagnant and heavily centralized.

Critics contend that this control has come at a heavy cost — eroding democratic accountability, silencing dissent, and concentrating power among a small political elite that benefits from the status quo.

The challenges facing Cameroon today are immense. From a fragile economy crippled by corruption and inequality to an unresolved separatist crisis in the Anglophone regions, the nation remains on edge.

Unemployment, particularly among the youth, continues to rise, and many young Cameroonians express deep frustration at being excluded from decision-making processes that shape their future.

To them, the Biya era represents a generational impasse — an unchanging system where promises of reform have long since lost credibility.

Supporters of the president, however, defend his legacy as one of stability and continuity in a volatile region. They argue that Biya’s leadership has prevented the kind of chaos that has engulfed neighboring nations, portraying him as a steady hand in turbulent times.

Yet the widening gap between the government’s claims and the daily struggles of ordinary citizens is increasingly impossible to ignore.

International observers, including the African Union, the European Union, and regional blocs, are watching closely, urging restraint and transparency as the nation awaits the final tally.

For many across Africa, Cameroon’s political moment is being seen as a test — not just of Biya’s resilience, but of whether aging leaders entrenched in power can adapt to modern democratic expectations.

The stakes are high for Issa Tchiroma Bakary as well. For him, this election is not simply a bid for office but a call for generational change — an attempt to end a political legacy that has defined Cameroon for most of its post-independence history.

Biya’s government, however, insists that the electoral process was credible, warning that any premature declarations of victory could destabilize the peace and unity of the country.

The situation remains fragile, with fears that escalating tensions could reignite conflict or provoke violent crackdowns reminiscent of previous elections.

After four decades at the helm, Paul Biya remains both a revered and reviled figure — a man whose rule has brought relative calm yet prolonged stagnation, whose leadership symbolizes both experience and excess.

Whether his grip on Cameroon is slipping or simply evolving under pressure remains to be seen.

But as the nation waits for clarity, one truth is undeniable: the next six to twenty-four months will define Biya’s legacy and Cameroon’s path forward.

In that time, the world will watch to see whether the aging president can stabilize his divided nation once more — or whether the tides of change, long restrained, will finally sweep through Yaoundé and usher in a new era for the people of Cameroon.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets thrash Mafco in TNM Super League

.…Bullets 3-0 Mafco

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-FCB Nyasa Big Bullets continued their impressive run in the TNM Super League with a dominant 3–0 victory over Mafco FC on Tuesday afternoon at a lively Kamuzu Stadium.

The game began on a balanced note with both teams showing intent and trading early free kicks though neither side could create meaningful chances.

As the match progressed, Bullets began to take control, with Frank Willard and Ephraim Kondowe dictating the tempo and creating pressure on the Mafco defense.

The hosts finally broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when striker Hassan Kajoke latched onto a fine cross to put Bullets ahead, sending the fans into jubilation.

Moments before the halftime whistle, Bullets were awarded a penalty after a foul inside the box and Kajoke stepped up once again, coolly converting to make it 2–0 before the break.

In the second half, coach Peter Mponda made tactical changes, introducing Babatunde Adepoju and Yamikani Mologeni to maintain the attacking tempo. The substitutions proved decisive as Babatunde added the third goal in the 77th minute, sealing the victory in style.

Despite making several substitutions, Mafco failed to find their rhythm with their best chance coming from Rodwell Robert, whose shot sailed over the bar midway through the second half.

Bullets, on the other hand, remained compact and disciplined, showcasing their depth and game management.

Hassan Kajoke was named Man of the Match after scoring a brace and showing great leadership in attack.

Speaking after the match, Bullets assistant coach Gilbert Chirwa expressed his delight, saying, “It’s very important that we played well and managed to score three goals and most importantly, we didn’t concede”.

“This second round is very tough, so collecting three points like this means a lot. What you saw today is exactly what we’ve been working on in training. The players executed our game plan perfectly,”he added.

Looking ahead to the upcoming Blantyre derby, Chirwa added, “We’re ready. The derby is always a special match. We’ll prepare well and fight to get another good result.”

On the other side, Mafco coach Siteroe Gondwe that The referees contributed to our loss today; otherwise, we played better.

Therefore, Bullets are leading the log table with 49 points from 20 games, while Mighty Wanderers are sitting in second place with 42 points from 18 games.

What ‘Murdaugh: Death in the Family’ Got Wrong About Alex’s Murder Trial

Hulu’s Murdaugh: Death in the Family unpacks the scandals, deaths and murder trial that made the Murdaugh family notorious — but what did the show get wrong?

Based on the “Murdaugh Murders” podcast, the scripted series, which premiered in October, followed journalist Mandy Matney as she investigated and blogged about the powerful family leading up to and in the wake of their downfall.

Matney began looking into the Murdaugh family and their crimes after Paul Murdaugh was under criminal indictment for Mallory Beach’s wrongful death before Alex Murdagh killed Paul and his mother, Maggie Murdaugh, in 2021. Alex was found guilty on all four counts related to their murders.

Alex was previously accused of misappropriating funds from his law firm, clients and the government through a scheme involving embezzlement, wire fraud and money laundering. He is currently facing a total of 102 grand jury criminal charges and 19 indictments relating to fraud and drug offenses. He was disbarred, had his assets seized and is serving two consecutive life sentences for the murders of Maggie and Paul.

Alex Murdaugh’s High-Profile Murder Trial: Where Are the Key Players Now?

Executive producer Michael D. Fuller spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about finding the balance between true events and creating a show.

“For anyone who knows the real story, it’s sprawling and it’s complex. The thing that was my guiding principle that I tried to imbue the process with is we might not always be able to do the [full] truth because [of] the restrictions of episode count and the running time. But let’s always try to be aware of what the truth is,” he shared in October. “Then let’s make sure that in our story’s truth we know why we made this decision. We know why we made this adaptation choice.”

The priority was to have “utmost respect and reverence” to the victims depicted on screen. Fuller also recalled how Alex’s trial affected the series since it was filming at the same time.

Murdaugh: Death in the Family is currently streaming on Hulu. Keep scrolling for a breakdown of every inaccuracy or onscreen shift the show made in order to create the TV show:

Alex Murdaugh’s Jellyball Operation

Before he was arrested, Alex was involved in a jellyfish harvesting and processing business that was shut down in 2015 amid environmental concerns. Fuller told Us it was included in the series for context despite it taking place years before the other events in Alex’s life involving Paul’s boat crash in 2019.

The Timeline of Gloria Satterfield’s Connection to the Murdaughs

Satterfield was the Murdaugh’s housekeeper who died in 2018 after suffering a fall at their home. Her death was connected to the Murdaugh family scandals when a large settlement was revealed to have been stolen by Alex. He ultimately admitted to lying about the circumstances of Satterfield’s death, which was previously ruled an accident.

In Murdaugh: Death in the Family, Satterfield was seen comforting Paul and the family after the 2019 boat crash but in real life she had already died.

A More Defined Jawline and Tighter Neck Are Possible With This Firming Serum

Perhaps it isn’t noticable to anyone but you, but a sagging neck and jowls can really do a number on your self confidence. The good news is that there is a quick fix — and no, it doesn’t require a trip to the plastic surgeon. Women, especially those over 40, are raving about the ShapeShift V-Line Jaw Defining Serum by SickScience Labs, swearing that it creates a noticeable difference in just a couple of weeks.

The reason that this serum is so effective is because it uses NX35 technology, a patented exosome technology that sends coded instructions to cells, triggering a response at the molecular level. In simpler terms, it works to naturally sculp the jawline and lift the neck so that both areas look visibly tighter.

But the magic isn’t just happening internally. The same product also softening, smoothing and hydrating the skin, which means it’s tackling wrinkles, crepiness and skin slackening for an overall more youthful appearance. The 100% vegan, cruelty-free and fragrance-free serum is also hypoallergenic, so it’s suitable for sensitive skin, and there’s no need to worry about dyes, silicones, parabens and phthalates — this pick has none of that.

To properly use the ShapeShift serum, dispense one or two pumps into your hands. In an upward motion, apply the product to your jawline, under your chin and neck. You can apply it day and night, but once you reach sculpted results that you’re happy with, you only need to use it once a day.

Shoppers are truly amazed with how quickly they can notice a difference in their appearance. The serum has earned an average of 4.7 out of five stars from over 400 reviews.

“I have only been using this a couple of weeks but am already noticing results,” said one verified purchaser. “My neck is visibly firmer. Excited to see what will continue to happen with regular use!” s

“I’ve tried so many products that have claimed to firm the jawline, and nothing has worked until now. I’m in my mid 40s and have struggled with tech neck since my 20s,” another five-star reviewer said. “By week two, my jawline was more pronounced, and the appearance of fine lines had decreased. My skin also felt smoother.”

Like with any skincare product, the best results come with consistent use, but it’s encouraging to see that this serum offers a noticeable difference straight away. Don’t delay — grab this gel from SkinScience Labs now!

NBM plc fires up Scorchers ahead of AFCON qualifiers

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has reiterated its full support to the Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, as they leave the country for Angola to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on Thursday.

Speaking after seeing off the team at Bakili Muluzi International Airport in Blantyre on Tuesday, NBM plc Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Akossa Hiwa, said the Bank, as the official sponsor, is proud to stand behind the Scorchers and remains optimistic about their performance.

“We have all the faith in the Scorchers because they have shown that they are a force to reckon with on the pitch. They have given 100%, and as a sponsor, we are fully behind them,” said Hiwa.

Hiwa added that NBM plc employees, known internally as ‘Blue Hearts’, are united in their support for the Scorchers, with a series of internal and external initiatives planned to rally the nation behind the team.

“We are all rallying for them and will have a number of activities to show our support. This is not just about sponsorship; it’s about national pride and empowerment,” said Hiwa.

She emphasized that NBM plc’s investment in women’s football reflects the Bank’s broader obligation to grassroots development and inclusivity in sports.

“NBM plc was the first to sponsor a full tournament in the women’s league and the first to take up the Scorchers. We believe this provides a platform for the development of the sport and inspires young girls across Malawi to know that their dreams are valid.”

“This is more than sponsorship. It is about building a legacy that shows young Malawian girls that they too can rise to the world stage,” said Hiwa.

Hiwa urged the Scorchers to give their best performance at the tournament, saying the nation’s hopes and aspirations rest on their shoulders.

Meanwhile, the team’s coach Lovemore Fazili expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness after weeks of intensive training.

“We have touched every part of the game from goalkeeping to attack and I believe we are ready. I promise Malawians that when we go to Angola, we will bring good results,” said Fazili.

The Scorchers are scheduled to play the decisive return fixture on October 28 at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
