Govt freezes funding to Zambia FA over Chipolopolo poor results

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-The Government of Zambia has suspended all financial support to the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) following a series of disappointing performances by the men’s senior national football team, the Chipolopolo.

In a statement jointly issued by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts and the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ), government expressed deep concern over the poor results registered by the team in recent international competitions.

The statement noted that despite the country’s financial challenges, the government has continued to allocate significant resources to support the national team and its technical staff, including expenses for air travel, accommodation, bonuses and a portion of the head coach’s salary.

“It is essential to understand the rationale behind continued government funding in the face of these unsatisfactory performances,” reads part of the statement.

The Ministry said it has demanded a detailed explanation from FAZ on the measures being taken to address the team’s poor performance and restore competitiveness in Zambian football.

It also seeks assurances that the head coach is delivering on his contractual obligations and that there is a clear justification for why public funds should continue to support the team despite a lack of results on the pitch.

Government stressed that transparency and accountability in the use of public funds are critical, especially when dealing with a sport that holds such a central place in Zambia’s national identity.

The statement emphasized that football remains a cornerstone of Zambia’s cultural heritage, capable of uniting communities, promoting national pride and inspiring youth toward positive lifestyles.

“Football has the power to unite communities, promote national pride and inspire youth to adopt healthy lifestyles,” the Ministry said.

“However, we must ensure that public investment yields meaningful outcomes and drives real progress,”the Ministry added.

The statement further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting sports development but underlined that continued financial backing must be based on clear accountability and performance.

Nancy Meyers Mourns ‘Fearless’ Diane Keaton After Her Death: ‘Lost a Giant’

Nancy Meyers is honoring her friendship with the late Diane Keaton.

“These past 48 hours have not been easy,” Meyers, 75, wrote via Instagram on Monday, October 13. “Seeing all of your tributes to Diane has been a comfort. As a movie lover, I’m with you all — we have lost a giant. A brilliant actress who time and again laid herself bare to tell our stories. As a woman, I lost a friend of almost 40 years — at times over those years, she felt like a sister because we shared so many truly memorable experiences.”

She continued, “As a filmmaker, I’ve lost a connection with an actress that one can only dream of. We all search for that someone who really gets us, right? Well, with Diane, I believe we mutually had that. I always felt she really got me so writing for her made me better because I felt so secure in her hands. I knew how vulnerable she could be. And I knew how hilarious she could be, not only with dialogue (which she said word for word as written but managed to always make it sound improvised) but she could be funny sitting at a dinner table or just walking into a room.”

Prior to Keaton’s death at age 79, she and Meyers collaborated on 1987’s Baby Boom, 1991’s Father of the Bride and the 1995 sequel. The pair reunited for 2003’s Something’s Gotta Give.

“But the truth is — Diane didn’t just ‘get me.’ I’ve watched all of her groundbreaking spectacular work with Woody Allen a million times and I watch her performance in Warren Beatty’s REDS with awe,” Meyers wrote. “Diane did exactly the same for them because that is what she does. She goes deep. And I know those who have worked with her know what I know … she made everything better.”

She continued, “Every set up, every day, in every movie, I watched her give it her all. When I needed her to cry in scene after scene in Something’s Gotta Give she went at it hard and then somehow made it funny. And I remember she would sometimes spin in a kind of goofy circle before a take to purposely get herself off balance or whatever she needed to shed so she could be in the moment.”

Meyers noted that Keaton was “fearless,” adding that the late actress was “like nobody ever, she was born to be a movie star, her laugh could make your day and for me, knowing her and working with her — changed my life.”

Meyers concluded, “Thank you Di. I’ll miss you forever.” Alongside the message, Meyers shared a throwback image of Keaton smiling.

News broke on Saturday, October 11, that Keaton died in California. She is survived by daughter Dexter and son Duke, whom she welcomed via adoption in 1996 and 2001, respectively.

No further details surrounding Keaton’s death were shared at the time, with a spokesperson for the family asking “for privacy” while confirming her death to People. Us Weekly reached out for comment.

‘Boots’ Season 1

Closeted teenager Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer) endured relentless bullying in high school and lives with his deeply religious parents, so he sets off to join the Marine Corps with his straight best friend. This was a dangerous move in the 1990s, as being gay in the military was illegal and could result in jail time or worse. However, Cameron keeps his secret and weathers the first week of boot camp as he plunges into a radical coming-of-age transformation.

Boots is based on the memoir The Pink Marine by Greg Cope White, but has a bit of a personal angle for series creator Andy Parker as well. The series will make you cry and laugh in equal measure in its empathetic exploration of gay masculinity, and in watching Cameron’s emotional, physical and mental journey towards radical self-acceptance.

‘John Candy: I Like Me’ (2025)

Colin Hanks directs this fascinating portrait of the life of beloved comic actor John Candy, who passed away tragically at the age of 43. Using a mix of rare, never-before-seen- seen footage, including outtakes, private home movies, archival material, audio commentary and interviews with friends and collaborators, Hanks chronicles Candy’s life as a young sketch comedian with Second City Television to his glory days as a massively successful film star in the ’80s and ’90s.

Fans of comedy classics like Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Splash will find a lot to love in John Candy: I Like Me, which is an affectionate tribute to a comic talent who was taken off the stage far too early. The archival footage in particular offers a compelling glimpse of a side of the star that few got to see before he passed.

Watch John Candy: I Like Me now on Amazon Prime Video.

‘The Bikeriders ‘ (2024)

In the 1960s, local Chicago woman Kathy Bauer (Jodie Comer) meets hot-headed biker Benny (Austin Butler) and they marry five weeks later. Kathy becomes ingratiated with the Vandals Motorcycle Club (based on the real-life Outlaws Motorcycle Club), who ruled the streets of Chicago, led by their enigmatic leader, Johnny (Tom Hardy). But tensions mount as an agitation from within the group threatens Johnny’s leadership.

Netflix’s Most Popular Movies — 3 You Need to Watch Now (October 13-17)

The Bikeriders is based on the photo book of the same name by photographer Danny Lyon (played by Mike Faist in the film), and the film depicts Lyon traveling around with the Vandals, interviewing them and creating a photo portrait of their lives. The moving drama film bears a rough authenticity from director Jeff Nichols and powerhouse emotional performances from the cast. It’s a surprisingly emotional look at masculinity and biker culture that will hit you where it hurts.

‘The Chair Company’ Season 1

Fans of Tim Robinson’s absurdist brand of comedy can’t go wrong with his newest venture, The Chair Company. Robinson and I Think You Should Leave co-creator Zach Kanin created this surreal mystery series about William “Ron” Trosper (Robinson), whose embarrassing moment at work leads him down a conspiratorial rabbit hole. The series is similar in tone to Friendship, the quirky A24 comedy starring Robinson from earlier this year, so if you liked that, you will likely enjoy The Chair Company.

9 New Movies to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, Prime Video and More (Oct. 10-12)

Ron Trosper is promoted to lead an ambitious new shopping mall development at his work, and on the day of the announcement meeting, he collapses to the floor when attempting to sit in his chair. Prince Andrew Told Jeffrey Epstein ‘We Are in This Together’ in 2011 Email

Another email between Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein has surfaced.

Multiple U.K. outlets obtained the apparent correspondence, dated February 2011, from the disgraced royal family member to the late billionaire sex offender.

“I’m just as concerned for you! Don’t worry about me!” the alleged email read. “It would seem we are in this together and will have to rise above it.”

Andrew’s message concluded, “Otherwise keep in close touch and we’ll play some more soon!!!!”

Prince Andrew’s Alleged Emails to Jeffrey Epstein: ‘We’ll Play Some More’

Epstein was arrested on federal charges of sex trafficking minors in Florida and New York in 2019. One month later, he died by suicide at age 66 at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York.

The Daily Mail claimed on Sunday, October 12, that it had verified the message came from an email address used by Andrew. Epstein’s email was previously revealed in several court documents. The publication claimed that Andrew declined to comment.

Us Weekly has reached out to a representative of Andrew for comment.

A separate series of emails between Andrew and Epstein were unearthed earlier this year — which were also reportedly sent in 2011. Andrew included the same signoff in one of his messages: “We’ll play some more soon!!!!”

Andrew previously stated during his infamous 2019 BBC Newsnight interview that he had stopped contacting Epstein in December 2010.

The Duke of York sat down with journalist Emily Maitlis at the time to address his friendship with Epstein and the allegations that he had sexually assaulted the late Virginia Giuffre when she was underage. The alleged assault reportedly took place on Epstein’s property.

Prince Andrew Through the Years: Royal Life, Fatherhood, Scandals and More

Giuffre allegedly met Epstein’s former associate Ghislaine Maxwell (who is currently incarcerated) in 2000 while working as a locker room attendant at Mar-a-Lago resort, now owned by President Donald Trump. Andrew denied Giuffre’s claims during the interview, saying he had “no recollection of ever meeting this lady” despite there being a photo of them together.

Guiffre eventually sued Andrew for sexual abuse in 2021. They settled outside of court for an undisclosed sum. Guiffre died by suicide at age 41 this past April.

Andrew stepped down from his royal duties following the Newsnight interview.

“It has become clear to me over the last few days that the circumstance relating to my former association with Jeffrey Epstein has become a major disruption to my family’s work and the valuable work going on in the many organizations and charities that I am proud to support,” he said in a statement at the time. “Therefore, I have asked Her Majesty if I may step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, and she has given her permission.”

Andrew further addressed his “ill-judged association” with Epstein in the statement.

“His suicide has left many unanswered questions, particularly for his victims, and I deeply sympathize with everyone who has been affected and wants some form of closure,” he added. “I can only hope that, in time, they will be able to rebuild their lives. Of course, I am willing to help any appropriate law enforcement agency with their investigations, if required.”
