“I need to control my emotions,” a choked-up Begley, 76, told Us at the Environmental Media Association (EMA) Awards on Saturday, October 11. “I was extremely close to Diane. I loved her a lot.”
The pair first starred together in the 1992 TV movie Running Mates, and more recently appeared in the hit 2018 romantic comedy Book Club, which made more than $100 million at the box office.
Begley held his composure as he remembered Keaton for being “like a sister to me” and “a dear, dear friend” while speaking to Us at the Studio City, California, awards show.
“It hit me hard when I heard of her passing,” he acknowledged. “She’s with us still [in spirit]. She’s not going anywhere.”
Book Club’s three other leading ladies — Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen — all paid tribute to their late friend following the news of her death on Saturday.
“It’s hard to believe…or accept…that Diane has passed,” Fonda, 87, wrote via Instagram. “She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress!”
Bergen, 79, added in her own statement to People, “This is a huge loss, both personally and for all of us. Diane was a true artist — tremendously gifted and uniquely talented in so many disciplines, yet also modest and wonderfully eccentric. I will miss her terribly.”

“There was no one, nor will there ever be, anyone like her,” Steenburgen said on Saturday. “I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend. My love to her family. What a wonder she was!!!”
The four leading ladies starred in Book Club as close friends trying to spice up their sex lives after reading erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey together. The 2018 comedy also featured Craig T. Nelson, Andy García and Don Johnson in supporting roles.
Little is known about Keaton’s death at this stage, as her spokesperson disclosed no additional details. Her family — which includes two children: daughter Dexter and son Duke — “asked for privacy” as they mourn the late actress.
A friend of Keaton’s told People on Saturday that the Father of the Bride star’s health “declined very suddenly” in the final few months of her life. While she had once been a fixture of her Brentwood, California, neighborhood on walks with her dog Reggie, Keaton reportedly disappeared from public life in recent months to spend time with only her “her closest family.”
Keaton made her final screen appearance in 2024 comedy Summer Camp, in which she starred opposite Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard and Eugene Levy. The role capped off a near-60 year Hollywood career that saw Keaton win a Best Actress Oscar for 1977’s Annie Hall and receive the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award, among many other honors.
Diane Keaton often discussed her decision to never marry despite dating some of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors in the 1970s.
“Today I was thinking about this. I’m 73 and I think I’m the only one in my generation, and maybe before, who has been a single woman all her life,” she told People in 2019.
The actress — who died at age 79 on October 11 — had multiple high profile relationships with her Hollywood costars early in her career. Keaton was a muse for actor-director Woody Allen during their few years together as a couple, in addition to dating her Godfather and Reds costars Al Pacino and Warren Beatty, respectively.
Keaton became a mother relatively late in life when she adopted two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke, in her 50s but never felt the need to tie the knot.
Keep scrolling for a look back at Keaton’s comments on why she never married.
The Right Thing
Keaton offered a blunt response in a 1996 ABC News interview when asked why she “never got married.”
“I think I never got married because I didn’t want to get married,” Keaton replied. “I didn’t choose to get married and the people that I was with, it was best that we were not married. I did the right thing.”
An Oddball
Speaking to People in 2019, Keaton suggested marriage may never have worked for her because she considered herself to be an outsider.
“I think that I’m strange,” she quipped. “I don’t know anything, and I haven’t learned. Getting older hasn’t made me wiser.”
Keaton argued that there was “something missing in me” and that a husband would need someone who “nurtured” them, which she was not capable of.

“I’m an odd ball,” she confessed. “I remember one day in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you’re going to make a good wife.’ And I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a wife. No.’”
‘Seduced By Talent’
The First Wives Club actress pushed back against the disparaging theory that she may have been “sad” about never marrying.
“[I’m not sad] because I think that I needed more of a maternal aspect,” she told People. “I don’t think it would have been a good idea for me to have married, and I’m really glad I didn’t, and I’m sure they’re happy about it, too.”
She added, “When I was young, I was looking to be loved by these extraordinary people. I think I should not have been so seduced by talent. When you’re both doing the same job, it’s not so great. I should have found just a nice human being, kind of a family guy.”
Conflicted Feelings
Speaking to YouTuber Kjersti Flaa in 2019, Keaton examined whether she was “really being honest” when she said she never wanted to “be someone’s wife.”
“I did say that and sometimes I think that’s not really right,” she admitted. “I think, in abstract, it might have been a really good idea to be married because I think it really is an important, wonderful institution for people to get together and stay together and live together. I don’t think I had it in me, though.”
Keaton suggested it would have been “taxing” to have “had the role [her] mother had” as a housewife.
“I didn’t want that. I didn’t want to have my mother’s role,” she insisted. “I saw that she had a lot of ambition that she couldn’t realize because of four kids and a husband in the ‘50s.”
‘A Different Sort of Love’
Keaton stressed in that 2019 interview that, “since marriage never really happened,” she developed “a different sort of love” for other people in her life.
“I really love the family that I have … those people are really, really important to me and my friends,” she added.
Ideal Husband
While Keaton often gave thoughtful responses when discussing marriage, she once light-heartedly pondered whether one Hollywood hunk might change her mind.
After host Ellen Degeneres broke the bad news that Tatum was married at the time to Jenna Dewan, Keaton had a tongue-in-cheek complaint: “Channing Tatum is actually married to someone else… not me?”

Book Club’s Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen have offered their heartfelt tributes to Diane Keaton following news of their costar’s death at 79.
“It’s hard to believe…or accept…that Diane has passed,” Fonda, 87, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, October 11.
Keaton’s spokesperson confirmed to People on Saturday that the actress died, though no further information was initially provided. Her family — which included two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke — “asked for privacy” in their time of mourning.
In her tribute, Fonda remembered Keaton as a “spark of life and light” who never took herself too seriously.
“[She was] constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view,” Fonda recalled. “Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress!”
The pair worked together on the 2018 romantic comedy Book Club, along with fellow Hollywood legends Bergen and Steenburgen. The Bill Holderman-directed comedy — which made more than $100 million at the box office — cast the four actresses as friends who spice up their love lives after reading erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey in their book club.
“This is a huge loss, both personally and for all of us,” Bergen, 79, told People on Saturday. “Diane was a true artist — tremendously gifted and uniquely talented in so many disciplines, yet also modest and wonderfully eccentric. I will miss her terribly.”
Steenburgen, 72, described Keaton as “magic[al]” in her own statement, as she looked back on her costar’s unrivaled place in Hollywood history.

Many other tributes poured in following the shocking news of Keaton’s death, including her First Wives Club costar Bette Middler, who shared how “unbearably sad” it was to lose the “brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary” actress.
“She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star,” Midler wrote via Instagram. “What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!”
Ben Stiller referred to Keaton as “one of the greatest film actors ever” via X, while Henry Winkler eulogized the Oscar winner as “an extraordinarily talented woman.”
“Every so often a person comes along that defies all definition,” Keaton’s Mrs. Soffel costar Matthew Modine wrote via X. “They’re a wonderful mystery. Sometimes they go digging within themselves attempting to discover something hidden inside — and then discover something magical — which they keep private. Diane was like that. All that and more — all packaged behind her gorgeous smile, razor sharp wit, and deliciously infectious laugh. Good speed, sister.”
Keaton’s career spanned nearly 60 years, and saw her win a Best Actress Oscar for 1977’s Annie Hall. She later branched out as a writer and filmmaker, in addition to continuing to act in popular comedies until shortly before her death. (Her final film role was the 2024 comedy Summer Camp, in which she starred with Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard.)

News of Keaton’s death broke on Saturday, October 11. A spokesperson for her family told People the actress died at her home in California. No additional information regarding her death was provided as Keaton’s family asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Keaton and Hawn, 79, costarred in the 1996 film The First Wives Club alongside Bette Midler. The trio played Elise Elliot (Hawn), Annie Paradis (Keaton) and Brenda Cushman (Midler). The movie also starred Maggie Smith, Sarah Jessica Parker, Stockard Channing, Dan Hedaya, Victor Garber, Stephen Collins, Elizabeth Berkly and Marcia Gay Harden.
In 2015, Hawn explained why a sequel to the movie had never been produced despite fans continuously asking to see the threesome back in action.
“We were all women of a certain age, and everyone took a cut in salary to do it so the studio could make what it needed,” she told Harvard Business Review at the time. “We all took a smaller back end than usual and a much smaller front end. And we ended up doing incredibly well. The movie was hugely successful. It made a lot of money. We were on the cover of Time magazine.”
She continued: “But two years later, when the studio came back with a sequel, they wanted to offer us exactly the same deal. We went back to ground zero. Had three men come in there, they would have upped their salaries without even thinking about it. But the fear of women’s movies is embedded in the culture.”
However, things seemed to change in November 2020, when Hawn hinted at the possibility the trio would reunite for a follow-up movie.
“The script has to be approved, and right now they’ve just given us another draft, so I gotta read that,” Hawn, 79, told Entertainment Tonight on November 18. “So, we’re inching our way toward it, let’s put it that way.”
The movie, which was never made, would have starred the original trio of women, as well as their children and grandchildren, after the man they each married dies in a department store. In 2024, Midler told People the movie was in “development hell.”
“It’s in the abyss where all good scripts go to die,” she added. “Fifteen years is the time limit, I think. When it’s been in development for 15 years, you kind of throw up your hands.”
Midler offered a tribute to Keaton on October 11. “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died,” Midler, 79, wrote via Instagram. “I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me.”
“She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star,” Midler also wrote. “What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!”
The late Diane Keaton chose an unconventional path to parenthood when she adopted her children well into her 50s — and was candid about the reason behind her decision.
“I didn’t think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother,” Keaton — who died at the age of 79 on Saturday, October 11 — previously told Ladies’ Home Journal. “Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist. It was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.”
Keaton welcomed daughter Dexter, 29, and son Duke, 25, via adoption and as a single mom in her 50s. While Keaton never married during her tenured and prestigious film career, she did date a few famous faces, including Woody Allen, Warren Beatty and Al Pacino.
In 2019, the Something’s Gotta Give actress opened up to People about her decision to never take a walk down the wedding aisle.
“Today I was thinking about this — I’m 71 and I think I’m the only one in my generation, and maybe before, who has been a single woman all her life,” she told the outlet at the time, before adding that it would “not have been a good idea for me to have married.”
“I’m really glad I didn’t, and I’m sure they’re happy about it too,” she added, referring to her Hollywood exes.
Later, in 2023, the actress once again reiterated that she was happy to live life as a single mom.
“I don’t date,” she told AARP The Magazine at the time, while insisting that it was “highly unlikely” that she would find herself in another romantic relationship in the future. “I don’t remember anyone calling me, going, ‘This is So-and-So, I’d like to take you out.’ They don’t happen. Of course not.”

The famed actress went on to explain her longstanding stance on marriage – a mindset she established when she was a teen.
“I remember one day in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you’re going to make a good wife,’” she said. “And I thought, ‘ I don’t want to be a wife. No.’”
While Keaton’s family asked for privacy in the wake of her death, many of her costars and fellow Hollywood stars paid tribute to the late actress.
“The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died,” Keaton’s The First Wives’ Club costar Bette Midler shared via Instagram on Saturday. “She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”
Keaton’s former Father of the Bride costars also paid tribute to the late actress.
“This breaks my heart. Getting to work with Diane Keaton will always be one of the highlights of my life,” Kimberly Williams-Paisley — who famously played Keaton’s daughter in the iconic films — wrote in the comments section of People‘s Instagram post announcing the actress’ death, alongside a red heart emoji.
There is growing skepticism among Malawians about whether the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has truly undergone a transformation, as evidenced by the physical altercation of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s Director General, George Kasakula.
This incident occurred because Kasakula publicly supported former President Chakwera and criticized President Mutharika for his advanced age.
Much as the Malawi Police Service has been applauded for swiftly apprehending the culprits, it is disheartening to note that the DPP administration chose to promote such uncivil atrocities by condemning Kamlepo Kalua and Noel Lipipa who openly spoke out against such acts of savagery and violence.
In all honesty, the reality is that Malawians are eagerly anticipating how the DPP government will tackle the economic challenges plaguing our country, such as soaring prices and a shortage of foreign exchange.
It should be acknowledged that Malawians have no interest in seeking revenge or retribution, as seemingly encouraged by the current administration.
Unfortunately, it t has been discovered that the delay in appointing a full cabinet has a potential to hinder the DPP effective governance.
It is crucial to prioritize this process to ensure that all ministries are operational so that they can start addressing the needs of the citizens promptly.
A lot of patriotic Malawians hold the view that the establishment of a new ministry of state should be critically assessed.
If it does not contribute significantly to governance or public service delivery, resources could be better allocated to existing ministries.
A reformed DPP is highly expected. Many Malawians are beginning to fear that the notorious DPP cadets, who have the history of torturing innocent Malawians, are beginning to resurface creating more panic among the citizenry.
It is essential for DPP to reform by focusing on justice and democratic values rather than on political retribution, vengeance and violence.
Furthermore, amid a worsening economy, a clear and actionable economic recovery plan is needed.
This should include strategies for job creation, investment in key sectors, and support for small and medium enterprises to stimulate growth.
In light of the revelation, from September 2025, that individuals continue to cast their votes based on regional and tribal affiliations, it is imperative for the present government to strive towards uniting all citizens of Malawi, regardless of these divisions.
This can be accomplished by implementing inclusive policies, fostering community involvement, and highlighting the importance of a national identity that embraces diversity.
To restore public trust, it is vital to ensure that appointments are made based on integrity and competence.
Avoiding individuals with known ties to crime and corruption will help in building a transparent and accountable government.
It is not too early for the DPP administration to start articulating how it will meet the commitments made during the campaign.
This will not only build credibility but also foster public confidence in the government’s ability to deliver on its promises.
Lastly but not least, immediate action is required to tackle food security, foreign exchange shortages, and fuel scarcity.
This may involve strategic partnerships, investment in agriculture, and efficient management of resources to stabilize the economy.
In conclusion, addressing these priorities will require strong leadership, collaboration, and a commitment to the welfare of all Malawians.
By focusing on these areas, the DPP government will potentially work towards a more stable, prosperous, and united Malawi.
