South Africa to hand over G20 Presidency to “Empty chair” amid U.S. boycott

PRETORIA-(MaraviPost)-South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Friday that his country will symbolically hand over the G20 presidency to an empty chair during the upcoming summit in Johannesburg, as the United States declines to attend.

The gesture highlights what many interpret as a diplomatic gaffe and a strain in relations between Pretoria and Washington at a time when South Africa seeks to assert its role on the global stage.

Ramaphosa, speaking from Soweto while overseeing preparations for the summit, said: “I have said in the past I don’t want to hand over to an empty chair, but the empty chair will be there. I will probably symbolically hand over to that empty chair and then talk to President Trump…”

The remark was prompted by the announcement from the U.S. that no government officials would attend the 22–23 November summit in South Africa.

The absence of U.S. leadership at the summit marks a rare low point for the G20 — an institution built on the cooperation of the world’s major economies.

The United States cited alleged human-rights abuses in South Africa, particularly claims of violence against white South Africans, as grounds for the boycott. These claims have been widely rejected by South African officials.

For South Africa, the presidency of the G20 is a major diplomatic milestone — the first time an African country holds the rotating leadership of the bloc.

The handover to the U.S., traditionally a powerhouse in global governance, was expected to go smoothly and symbolically.

Instead, the “empty chair” moment signals tension, distrust, and a rerouting of global power dynamics.

Ramaphosa’s reference to handing over to an empty chair carries significant symbolism.

On one hand, it reflects South Africa’s willingness to proceed with leadership and agenda-setting even when one of the bloc’s most influential members opts out.

On the other hand, it may be seen as a diplomatic rebuke — a message that the U.S. absence will not halt the G20’s function, but that the void will be visible.

Despite the tension, Ramaphosa made clear that trade and cooperation with the United States remain priorities for South Africa.

“We export products to that country that in the end don’t end up in the White House. They end up in the hands of consumers in the United States,” Ramaphosa noted.

He added that while some might argue for disengagement, South Africa must sometimes engage with countries that are not friendly to safeguard the interests of its people.

The upcoming summit in Johannesburg is expected to focus on issues high on the agenda of the Global South: climate resilience, debt relief, and inclusive development.

South Africa’s theme for the presidency, “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” reflects this shift in priorities.

With the U.S. absence looming, the onus falls on other leaders and emerging economies to fill the vacuum.

Critics argue that without robust U.S. participation, the G20’s influence could diminish.

The United States has historically played a central role in shaping global economic and financial governance. Its absence may reduce the summit’s capacity to enact major agreements.

Supporters of South Africa’s approach, however, view the moment as an opportunity: the Global South can step forward, diversify leadership, and reduce reliance on traditional powers.

Ramaphosa’s “empty chair” gesture may thus serve dual purposes: a provocation and an invitation. It warns that global diplomacy cannot simply rely on one dominant player, and invites others to engage more fully.

For the Johannesburg summit, it may encourage African, Asian, and Latin American leaders to press their agenda, potentially with greater autonomy.

How the U.S. responds if invited to the hand-over remains uncertain.

Whether it sends even a low-level representative or stays completely away could send even stronger signals about its role in global governance.

For South Africa, the practical implications are serious: hosting a summit of this scale demands security, infrastructure, and resources.

The eyes of the world will be on Johannesburg next week.

In the end, the “empty chair” might become a powerful reminder: that in a changing world, leadership vacuums speak as loudly as fulfilled seats.

How the G20 adapts will reveal whether it remains relevant or becomes a relic of a shifting geopolitical order.

Lucien Laviscount Was ‘Taken Aback’ by the ‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5 Premiere

Lucien Laviscount is keeping expectations high while teasing twists and turns in season 5 of Emily in Paris.

“Expect the unexpected,” Laviscount, 33, who plays Alfie, exclusively told Us Weekly while attending the Netflix House Philadelphia VIP Housewarming Party on Monday, November 10. “I know that when I first got the pilot [for the season 5 premiere], I was taken aback a little bit.”

Laviscount is excited for fans to see the final product. “But again, the Emily in Paris universe just keeps on churning out great stuff,” he hinted. “I leave all my fate in the writers. This season is a fun one.”

The Netflix series, which premiered in 2020, centers around Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) and her often hilarious attempts to find her footing in France after moving from the U.S. for a new job. Emily subsequently ends up caught in a love triangle between Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and Alfie (Laviscount).

Which ‘Emily in Paris’ Stars Are — and Aren’t — Returning for Season 5?

Emily intentionally started season 4 by choosing Gabriel but it ended as quickly as it started. She ended the season by moving on with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) in Rome and she wasn’t the only one going on new adventures. Alfie, meanwhile, brought up a girlfriend that viewers have yet to meet — but Laviscount didn’t appear to rule out his character still having possible feelings for Emily.

“Time will tell all,” he said about the chances of him returning to the love triangle. “I’m just happy I get to come back and work with these people every season.”

Laviscount’s costar Ashley Park, who was also at the Netflix House Philadelphia VIP Housewarming Party, offered similar hints about what will unfold when the show returns on December 18.

What I’ll say is that was a teaser [that Netflix released] and that was only in Rome,” Park, 34, who plays Mindy Chen, shared “We also filmed in Paris and Venice so that was truly a teaser.”

What to Know About ‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5

Park promised that fans are in for a fun ride.

“This gives you a taste of the tone and what you can be excited for in the first couple of episodes,” she added. “But there’s a lot more. The best is yet to come.”

While season 5 will be going through some changes with Emily making a move to Rome, creator Darren Star previously shut down fan concerns that Emily in Paris would now be Emily in Rome.

“All I know is [I don’t want to do] Emily in Space. I don’t need to go to space,” Park quipped to Us on Monday about possible scenarios for story lines in the future. “I’ll go anywhere else. Preferably a beach.”

Emily in Paris returns Thursday, December 18, on Netflix.

3 New to Hulu Movies I’m Watching This Weekend (November 14-16)

Need an escape from all the chaos happening in the world right now? Then Hulu is the streamer for you.

The service has tons of escapist fare available with just a few button clicks and a reasonable subscription fee.

We’re big fans here at Watch With Us, which is why we’ve curated a brief list of three new to Hulu movies you should stream this weekend.

You can’t go wrong with The Jane Austen Book Club, It Could Happen to You or The Personal History of David Copperfield. Heck, watch all three and leave all your worries at the doorstep.

‘The Jane Austen Book Club’ (2007)

William Shakespeare is arguably the most famous English writer ever, but I’d wager Jane Austen is the most beloved. The author of Emma and Pride and Prejudice has charmed readers since the early 19th century, so it’s not unreasonable that the book club at the center of the 2007 film The Jane Austen Book Club revolves around someone who only wrote six complete novels and who has been dead for nearly 200 years.

8 New Movies to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, Disney+, More (November 14-16)

Like all of Austen’s heroines, the film’s main characters are all looking for love, even if they won’t admit to it. Sylvia (Amy Brenneman) is stuck in a dead marriage, while Jocelyn (Maria Bello) just got out of one and is blind to fellow member Grigg’s (Hugh Dancy) obvious interest in her. Prudie (Emily Blunt) is already in love with her husband, but is increasingly tempted by a student in the art class he teaches. As the club reads one Austen book after another, each member takes inspiration from the author’s headstrong heroines and finds the courage to take a chance on love again.

The Jane Austen Book Club benefits from a great cast of veteran actresses and then-up-and-comers who have since become genuine stars. Bello’s career has slowed in recent years, but she’s in her prime here as a woman who doesn’t want to open herself up to romance again. Blunt is also terrific — if a bit miscast — as a mousy (!) woman who wants to take a bite of the forbidden fruit Tery (Kevin Zegers) seems to offer her. The film is a chick-lit picture done right, and it will bring a much-needed smile to your face.

The Jane Austen Book Club is streaming on Hulu.

‘It Could Happen to You’ (1994)

What would you do if you won the lottery? That’s a common enough question, but the charming 1994 movie goes a bit further with it. When kind NYPD cop Charlie (Nicolas Cage) doesn’t have money to tip broke waitress Yvonne (Bridget Fonda) at his favorite Queens diner, he offers a deal — he’ll come back tomorrow and double his tip, or he’ll split his lottery winnings. It’s no spoiler to reveal that Charlie wins $4 million and splits it with Yvonne, which garners a lot of media attention for them both and scorn from Charlie’s greedy wife, Muriel (Rosie Perez). Things get even more complicated when Charlie and Yvonne begin to fall for one another.

It Could Happen to You’s is a deliberately old-fashioned romance, populated mostly by working-class people who are true to their word. Even when Charlie and Yvonne strike it rich, they don’t forget their blue-collar roots, which is why they fall in love. Cage does his best Jimmy Stewart impression, while Fonda shows all the charisma and appeal that should’ve made her a bigger star. It’s Perez, though, who steals the show in every scene she’s in as Craig’s firecracker wife. You want to hate Muriel, but Perez’s manic energy makes it really hard to.

It Could Happen to You is streaming on Hulu.

‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’ (2020)

Does the world need another Charles Dickens adaptation? Lots of people would answer “no,” but I say, bring them on! One of the best is The Personal History of David Copperfield, a spirited and funny adaptation of the author’s celebrated 1850 novel, David Copperfield.

Dev Patel stars as the title character, a poor but enterprising English lad who gradually rises through London society. After enduring some hardships as a child, including a traumatizing stint at a factory that’s one of Dickens’ literary trademarks, David matures into a young adult and becomes a lawyer-in-training while living in London. But his poor past comes back to haunt him, and his present fortunes — not to mention a potential future with the beautiful Dora (Morfydd Clark) — could be in jeopardy.

10 Must-Watch Comedy Movies on Hulu Right Now (October 2025)

What makes The Personal History of David Copperfield different from most other adaptations is that it never once feels stuffy or, God forbid, “respectful.” While more or less faithful to Dickens’ original text, the movie changes things up for the better, giving the story a liveliness that makes it easy to watch. Credit cowriter and director Armando Iannucci, who brings his gift of wordplay, which made his cutting-edge shows The Thick of It and Veep so addictive to watch, to Dickens’ very Victorian story. Among the large and impressive cast, Patel stands out as a Dickens hero you envy and root for, even though all the odds are stacked against him.

The Personal History of David Copperfield is streaming on Hulu.

Refugees smile as court orders police to release confiscated containers

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a significant victory for two refugees, a court order has led to the release of their shipping containers, seized by police during the 2023 refugee relocation exercise.

Tayub Garffar Jusab and Jean Claude Mbarubukeye, the two refugees, walked out of the National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe with smiles, having successfully reclaimed their property.

The police had suspected that some containers posed a security threat, but a recent search found no evidence of weapons, prompting the court to order their release.

The two refugees had sought legal intervention, and their efforts have paid off.

Inua Advocacy Communication Officer Brenda Buliyani has encouraged other refugees whose containers were seized to come forward and reclaim their property through proper legal channels.

“This is a positive development, and we hope it sets a precedent for others who have had their property seized,” she said.

National Police Service spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed that 14 containers have been released so far, following court orders.

“We have 53 containers with pending interest from owners, while 72 remain unclaimed,” he said.

Kalaya added that the police are committed to upholding the law and protecting the rights of all individuals, including refugees.

The relocation exercise in 2023 was aimed at addressing security concerns and managing refugee populations.

However, the seizure of containers has been a contentious issue, with many refugees claiming they were unfairly targeted.

The successful reclamation of the containers is seen as a testament to the power of legal advocacy and the importance of upholding human rights.

As refugees continue to navigate the complexities of their situation, this development offers a glare of hope.

The incident highlights the need for clear policies and procedures governing the treatment of refugees and their property.

It also underscores the importance of access to legal aid and advocacy services for vulnerable populations.

As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: the rule of law and respect for human rights must guide all actions, including those related to refugee management.

Meghan Trainor Claps Back at Criticism of 60-Lb Weight Loss: ‘I Feel Great’

Meghan Trainor is clapping back at criticism of her 60-pound weight loss.

The “All About That Bass” singer, 31, told Entertainment Tonight in an interview on Thursday, November 13, that her new song, “Still Don’t Care,” is a response to people scrutinizing her appearance.

“‘I’m literally, for the first time ever, after having babies, taking care of my health to the highest level. I’ve never felt better, and I look incredible. I feel great,” Trainor said. “And that’s when people attack me.”

She continued, “I was like, ‘Wait a second. I’m taking care of myself. You don’t like it?’ So what am I supposed to do? I have to find a way to not be affected by that.”

Meghan Trainor’s Quotes About Her Weight Loss Journey After Rise to Fame

Trainor, who shares sons Riley, 4, and Barry, 2, with husband Daryl Sabara, previously opened up about using GLP-1 medication Mounjaro — the brand name for tirzepatide — to help her after giving birth to her second child in July 2023.

In March, the singer shared pictures of herself at Billboard’s Women in Music event on Instagram and said it was “a little bit disheartening that so many of the questions (and comments) were focused on my body instead of my music, my passion, or the decade of hard work that got me here.”

“This is what it’s like to be a woman in the music industry,” she wrote.

“No, I don’t look like I did 10 years ago. I’ve been on a journey to be the healthiest, strongest version of myself for my kids and for me,” Trainor explained. “I’ve worked with a dietician, made huge lifestyle changes, started exercising with a trainer, and yes, I used science and support (shout-out to Mounjaro!) to help me after my 2nd pregnancy. And I’m so glad I did because I feel great.”

Meghan Trainor Turns Heads With New Look After Using Weight Loss Drug

During an April episode of her and Sabara’s “Workin’ On It” podcast, the couple opened up about taking Mounjaro, explaining that they “do everything together.”

“We did 75 Hard after Riley was born and, man, did we crush,” Trainor said. “Then, we heard more and more of our friends — and even our doctors — were on Mounjaro and Ozempic.”

She continued, “I was like, ‘I don’t want any of that,’ and ‘I know how to do it on my own,’” she explained. “I could do that, but when I asked my doctor, I was like, ‘Tell me everything.’ I did the research, and I felt safe.”

Sabara, 33, then added, “So, I did it, too.”

Celebrities Who’ve Spoken About the Ozempic Weight Loss Trend

“I also gained some [sympathy] pregnancy weight,” the actor said. “We’ve been on this journey for a while and we learned how there are right ways to do it.”

Trainer said she has “no shame” about taking the GLP-1 medication, adding, “We were like, ‘We have to make sure we don’t lose muscle that we worked so hard gaining all those years.’ We stay in the gym, we work out, we eat right, and we just noticed that we were less hungry.”

“I’m really proud of myself for learning. It was really hard to do and I’m going to keep getting better and keep getting stronger, achieve things I never thought I could achieve and no one can stop me — not even mean comments,” Trainor said.
