Why It Was Important for Patricia Altschul to Honor Late Butler in New Book

It was a no-brainer for Patricia Altschul to spend a good portion of her new memoir honoring her late butler, Michael Kelcourse.

“He was a family member,” Altschul, 84, exclusively told Us Weekly while promoting her memoir, Eat, Drink, and Remarry: Memories from a Lifetime of Art, Class, and Southern Charm, released on Tuesday, November 11.

“He was the consummate professional, but we also felt like he was a member of our family,” she continued. “He lived here and was with us practically every day. Even on his days off, a lot of times, he wouldn’t want to go any place or do anything but come over and make dinner or play with the dogs.”

Altschul announced Kelcourse’s death in October 2024 with an emotional Instagram post. Kelcourse’s death came years after he suffered a rare acute spinal stroke in February 2021.

“He deserved to be memorialized, and I wanted to do that,” she told Us. “He was with me [for] 18 years. 18 years is a long time.”

‘Southern Charm’ Stars Who Left the Series: Where Are They Now?

Altschul recalled hiring Kelcourse in 2004, after the death of his former boss, who she described as “an ancient dowager who maintained an enormous estate” in New York.

“We met, and I liked everything about him,” she wrote, revealing that Kelcourse was her companion when she was looking at new properties, including Altschul’s iconic Charleston mansion. When Southern Charm premiered in 2014, Kelcourse became a breakout star.

“Michael became the resident expert on cocktails and everything domestic, and so many fans wrote to him for his housekeeping advice that we had to incorporate an ‘Ask Michael’ button on my website,” Altschul recalled.

She also made it clear that they never had a romantic relationship.

“I have trouble writing the words. Did I ever have a romantic relationship with Michael? No … God, no,” Altschul shared. “The relationship between an employer and a butler is completely professional and built on trust and mutual respect. Period. Please don’t ask again.”

All joking aside, Altschul got real when she recalled the morning that Kelcourse had his stroke in her book.

“As he fell to the floor, he pulled the phone down with him and managed to press the ‘All page’ button. ‘Call an ambulance,’ he said into the speaker. ‘I’m having a stroke,’” she wrote. “I was asleep upstairs but woke up when I heard his panicked voice and immediately dialed 911.”

‘Southern Charm’ Season 11 Everything to Know: Trailer, Premiere Date

Altschul’s son, Whitney Sudler-Smith, “raced” to Kelcourse’s room and “put a pillow under his head” until the ambulance arrived. The spinal cord stroke left him paralyzed.

“The news of his condition — and the terrible uncertainty of his future — was devastating,” she wrote.

Kelcourse moved to a full-time care facility in Florida to be “close to his family” in the years preceding his death.

“Wonderful, dedicated, kind, and exceptional-these were the words people used to describe Michael,” she wrote. “He was all that and so much more.”

Eat, Drink and Remarry is out now.

Zambians question music industry’s silence as General Kanene buries his daughter

……While the community and colleagues from Komboni Radio stood by him, fellow musicians were notably absent during the funeral of General Kanene’s one-year-old daughter, Sophia.

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-Citizens in Zambia have expressed concern over the apparent silence and absence of the country’s music industry during the funeral of popular musician Clifford Dimba, better known as General Kanene.

Kanene, who recently lost his one-year-old daughter, Sophia, laid her to rest this week in an emotional ceremony attended by members of his local community and close friends.

The funeral attracted strong support from neighbours and community members who live around Kanene, as they rallied together to help him meet the daily needs of the mourning period.

Despite the tragic news spreading widely across social media and entertainment circles, no notable figures from the Zambian music industry appeared at the house of mourning or at the burial ceremony.

This lack of presence has sparked public debate, with many questioning why fellow artists did not show solidarity during one of their colleague’s most painful moments.

Observers say this incident reveals a deeper truth about the nature of fame and relationships in the entertainment world.

Many have argued that fame often brings people close for selfish reasons, creating relationships that are mostly transactional rather than genuine.

When tragedy strikes, these shallow connections often disappear, leaving the affected person to rely on family, neighbours, and genuine friends for emotional and practical support.

A visibly heartbroken yet composed General Kanene was surrounded by colleagues from Komboni Radio, where he currently works, as well as friends he interacts with daily.

Witnesses described the atmosphere as both somber and supportive, with community members doing their best to comfort the grieving artist.

Social commentators have taken the moment to remind people of the importance of building real, lasting relationships based on sincerity rather than status or fame.

Kanene, who has endured both personal and professional challenges over the years, received a heartfelt farewell message from many ordinary Zambians who continue to view him as one of their own.

“R.I.P little angel,” read a touching post shared by TV Yatu, capturing the sorrow that has swept through Kanene’s local community.

As the music industry reflects on this moment, many are calling for unity, empathy, and stronger human bonds among artists beyond the stage and spotlight.

Chakwera MCP’s Govt fuel mismanagement exposed, DPP steps up to restore stability

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi finds itself grappling with a severe fuel shortage that has paralyzed key sectors of its economy and disrupted the daily lives of its citizens.

At the heart of this crisis lies a troubling legacy of mismanagement and corruption linked to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) government under former President Lazarus Chakwera.

As the nation struggles to fill its empty fuel reserves, which have been depleted since July 2024, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government has stepped forward with decisive action aimed at stabilizing the situation and restoring confidence in the country’s energy security.

The roots of the current fuel shortage run deep, tracing back to the MCP administration’s failure to effectively manage the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) and maintain adequate fuel reserves.

Our investigations reveal that the MCP regime allowed systemic corruption and financial malfeasance to fester unchecked within the fuel supply chain.

The siphoning off of an estimated 22 billion kwacha through questionable fuel suppliers under MCP’s watch was not merely a case of poor planning but a deliberate plundering of resources that were critical for sustaining Malawi’s energy needs.

This corruption scandal exposed the fragile underbelly of Malawi’s fuel infrastructure.

Instead of safeguarding the country’s reserves and ensuring steady fuel availability, the MCP administration’s cadres allegedly prioritized personal gain over national interest.

The consequences have been dire: since mid-2024, Malawi’s fuel reserves have been empty, leaving the nation vulnerable to economic shocks and operational paralysis in sectors dependent on reliable energy supplies.

Citizens have borne the brunt of this crisis, facing soaring transport costs, scarcity of essential goods, and an uncertain economic future.

In stark contrast, the DPP government, now at the helm, has adopted a markedly different approach to tackling the crisis.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the new administration has prioritized transparency and accountability as fundamental pillars in restoring Malawi’s fuel security.

The DPP has initiated comprehensive audits of NOCMA’s operations to uncover the full extent of mismanagement and corruption inherited from the previous regime.

These audits are crucial for identifying weaknesses and enforcing corrective measures that prevent a repeat of such a debilitating crisis.

Moreover, the DPP has emphasized the importance of stringent oversight mechanisms to ensure that fuel procurement and distribution processes are conducted with integrity.

By instituting rigorous vetting procedures for suppliers and empowering independent watchdogs to monitor NOCMA’s activities, the current government is sending a clear message that graft and embezzlement will no longer be tolerated.

This proactive stance is not only stabilizing the immediate fuel supply but also laying the groundwork for sustainable management practices that can safeguard Malawi’s energy future.

The economic stakes could not be higher. Should the fuel shortage have persisted unchecked, Malawi’s economy would have faced catastrophic disruptions.

Transportation networks, which are vital for moving goods and people, would have suffered severe interruptions, exacerbating inflation and limiting access to essential commodities.

The ripple effects would extend to increased unemployment and heightened social unrest, deepening poverty levels and eroding public trust in governance.

The urgency with which the DPP has acted highlights its commitment to averting these potential disasters and cushioning ordinary Malawians from further hardship.

It is important to acknowledge the resilience and determination demonstrated by the DPP in the face of a crisis not of its making.

While the MCP government’s negligence and corruption created the fuel scarcity, the DPP has taken up the mantle of responsibility with vigor and transparency.

The administration’s efforts to rebuild trust through accountability and reform are critical not only for resolving the current shortage but also for restoring hope in Malawi’s institutional capacity to manage public resources effectively.

Yet, the path ahead remains challenging. Rebuilding fuel reserves and ensuring uninterrupted supply require sustained political will, financial investment, and continuous vigilance.

The lessons from the MCP era must serve as a cautionary tale, underscoring the dangers of complacency and corruption in managing strategic national resources.

The DPP’s ongoing reforms must be supported by all stakeholders, including civil society and international partners, to foster an environment where transparency and good governance become the norm rather than the exception.

The fuel crisis in Malawi is a stark reminder of how poor leadership and corruption can jeopardize national security and economic stability.

The MCP government’s failure to maintain adequate fuel reserves and its entanglement in corrupt practices have left the country vulnerable to avoidable hardship.

Conversely, the DPP’s prompt and transparent response to the crisis signals a renewed commitment to good governance and public accountability.

By confronting the challenges head-on and instituting reforms, the DPP is not only working to stabilize the current situation but also striving to ensure that Malawi’s energy sector can support sustainable development and prosperity for all its citizens in the years to come.

Malawi Justice Minister Mhango reviews Chikangawa plane crash investigation reports

.…Charles Mhango vows thorough scrutiny of domestic and German investigation findings before advising national leadership

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s Minister of Justice, Charles Mhango, has confirmed that by the end of this week, he will have completed reviewing all investigation reports related to the plane crash that claimed the life of former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others in Chikangawa, Mzimba.

Speaking on today’s edition of the program Kulinji, Mhango explained that he had summoned the relevant reports concerning the accident and began examining them last Friday.

He noted that among the three reports he received, he has now completed reviewing the first, which was issued by the German investigative body, BFU, and is currently analyzing the report of the investigation conducted locally in Malawi.

Mhango added that he will then proceed to examine the final BFU report before finalizing his assessment.

According to the Minister, once all reports have been fully reviewed, he will provide his recommendations to the Head of State, advising whether a further investigation is necessary or if no additional inquiry is required.

When asked about initial findings, Mhango said he could not comment extensively at this stage, but he observed that several individuals who were invited to provide evidence to the investigation committee either refused to attend or submitted their testimony under apparent fear.

The Justice Minister assured Malawians that all reports are being scrutinized with professionalism and that his guidance to the national leadership will be impartial and based strictly on technical evidence, without bias.

The President, immediately after being briefed, emphasized that he would await the Minister’s professional advice before making any decision on whether a subsequent investigation should be launched.

Malawi FA praised for district-level referee training program

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE–(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Referees Manager, Duncan Lengani, has commended the association’s leadership under President Fleetwood Haiya for introducing the nationwide District-Level Referees Training Program, describing it as a timely intervention in enhancing officiation structures in the country.

Lengani made the remarks on Tuesday when FAM rolled out the nationwide referee training program targeting aspiring match officials at the district level as part of its ongoing football development initiatives.

“We are conducting referee training across the country, and this has been made possible through the dynamic leadership of the FA in collaboration with the National Bank of Malawi,” said Lengani.

He added that the training sessions will continue until December this year.

“As referees, we are grateful to FAM and NBM for giving us this opportunity to identify and nurture talent from the districts and to increase the number of qualified match officials who can officiate at all levels of football in Malawi,” Lengani said.

The program is being implemented in collaboration with the National Bank of Malawi under the NBM Championship, which is currently underway in all 31 football districts across the nation.

The initiative began in Mangochi last week before moving to Mchinji and has now reached Mzuzu, where sessions kicked off with students from Mzuzu University.

The next districts scheduled for the training are Nkhata Bay, Rumphi, and Blantyre.

Apostle Kawinga ministries aids Ntchisi farmers with solar-powered irrigation systems torwards food security boost

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Salvation for All Ministries Foundation International (SFAMI), led by Apostle Clifford Kawinga, has launched a solar-powered irrigation initiative aimed at supporting local farmers in Ntchisi District.

The program, which also includes the distribution of 50 bags of farm inputs to each beneficiary, is set to benefit over 200 farmers from the areas of Senior Chief Chawanda and Senior Chief Kalumo.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Apostle Kawinga said the initiative seeks to empower smallholder farmers to enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen food security through sustainable irrigation systems.

“We believe in transforming lives through practical support. With these solar-powered irrigation systems, farmers will be able to irrigate their crops efficiently, even during dry seasons,” said Apostle Kawinga

Chairperson for Chonkho Veronica Manuel expressed her gratitude, noting that the new system would greatly ease the burden of water pumping for irrigation.

“This development will make our farming much easier and more productive. We are truly grateful for this support,” she said.

In their remarks, both Senior Chief Chawanda and Senior Chief Kalumo commended SFAMI for the initiative, noting that it will enable farmers to grow crops all year round instead of relying solely on rain-fed agriculture.

They also urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the equipment for their personal and community benefit.

The project is expected to significantly boost crop yields, improve livelihoods, and contribute to economic growth within the beneficiary communities.

Former Malawi leader Bakili Muluzi withdraws from Lungu burial mediation

…..Former Malawi president cites unresolved complexities in dispute over late Zambian leader Edgar Lungu’s final resting place.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Former President Bakili Muluzi has officially withdrawn from his role as mediator in efforts to resolve the ongoing disagreement between the Zambian Government and the family of the late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

Lungu, who passed away in June this year while receiving treatment at a hospital in South Africa, has not yet been buried due to sharp differences between his relatives and the government over his final resting place.

The Zambian Government has been pushing for Lungu’s remains to be repatriated to Zambia for a State funeral, arguing that as a former head of state, he deserves to be laid to rest on national soil with full honours.

However, members of Lungu’s family have opposed this plan, insisting that he be buried in South Africa, citing alleged mistreatment and humiliation the late president suffered under the current administration while he was alive.

In a statement released today, Dr. Muluzi confirmed his decision to step away from the mediation process, explaining that although significant progress had been made, certain deep-seated issues remained unresolved.

He said the complexity of the dispute and the sensitivity of the emotions involved required both parties—the Lungu family and the Zambian Government—to engage directly and find a mutual path toward closure.

Reads part of Muluzi’s statement: “It is our sincere hope that space will yet emerge for renewed, calm and principled communication so that closure may be reached.”

Muluzi, who was appointed to help mediate the standoff earlier this year due to his experience in conflict resolution and statesmanship, expressed optimism that dialogue would eventually prevail despite his withdrawal.

He emphasized that true reconciliation and respect for the late leader’s legacy can only be achieved through understanding, empathy, and a willingness by both sides to compromise in good faith.

As the stalemate continues, the fate of Edgar Lungu’s burial arrangements remains uncertain, leaving both the Zambian nation and his family in an emotional impasse months after his passing.
