…Urge urgent government action to restore peace

The Plateau State Association in the United Kingdom (PSA-UK) has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, warning that escalating violence is inflicting severe damage on lives, livelihoods and the country’s global reputation.

Speaking at a virtual press conference monitored by BusinessDay on Friday, PSA-UK President Solomon Chollom and Publicity Secretary Sendi Zechariah said the security situation has deteriorated far beyond isolated incidents and now reflects a nationwide breakdown in safety and governance.

PSA-UK noted that the pattern of violence—ranging from mass killings to abductions and attacks on places of worship—has grown in scale and brutality over the years, spreading across nearly all regions.

“The Plateau State Association UK (PSA-UK) expresses deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria and the devastating impact it continues to have on lives, livelihoods, development and global perception of both Plateau State and the nation at large. It is alarming and heartbreaking that what began as isolated incidents decades ago has now snowballed into a nationwide catastrophe—one that has spared no region and continues to expand in scale and brutality,” the group said.

The association criticised the Federal Government for what it described as a lack of strong political will to arrest and prosecute perpetrators of major attacks. It argued that despite armed groups—including armed Fulani herders—publicly claiming responsibility for several assaults, many attacks are still officially attributed to “unknown gunmen,” a narrative the group described as untenable.

PSA-UK added that several of these violent groups maintain visible online footprints and often issue public claims of responsibility, making the lack of decisive security action more difficult to justify. It said if security agencies lack the capacity to track and disable these networks, the government should seek international assistance.

The group cited several recent incidents that have heightened public anxiety, including the killing of a senior military officer by insurgent fighters, attacks on worshippers in Kwara State, the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, and ongoing killings and village annexations in Plateau State. It added that bandits negotiating with the government and preventing farmers from accessing their farmlands reflect a dangerous level of impunity.

While expressing support for the Nigerian Armed Forces, PSA-UK urged the military hierarchy to conduct an internal audit to assess professionalism, neutrality, readiness and training, amid growing claims of compromise in certain operations.

The association also expressed solidarity with families who have lost loved ones and with displaced persons living in camps across the country. It encouraged citizens to hold their elected leaders accountable, noting that the constitutional power to elect leaders includes the power to recall them when they fail.

In a direct appeal to the President and the Federal Government, PSA-UK stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the foremost responsibility of national leadership. It rejected attempts to shift blame to state governors, saying governors do not control the military or federal security agencies.

The group called on the Federal Government to urgently dismantle armed groups, rescue abducted citizens and rebuild public trust in security institutions. It also urged the Plateau State Government to strengthen local intelligence networks and called on the international community to increase diplomatic pressure and humanitarian support.

PSA-UK reaffirmed its solidarity with victims of violence nationwide, describing the situation as not just a security challenge but a humanitarian and moral emergency. It pledged continued advocacy for a Nigeria where communities are safe and citizens can live without fear of abduction, displacement or targeted attacks.

The G20 leaders called for “just, comprehensive, and lasting
peace” in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo
in a joint declaration published on Saturday,
Azernews reports.

“We affirm our unwavering commitment to act in accordance with
international law, including international humanitarian law and the
Charter of the United Nations and its principle of peaceful
settlement of disputes and in this regard, we condemn all attacks
against civilians and infrastructure,” leaders said in the
statement.

The declaration was previously adopted earlier today with “an
overwhelming consensus” at the very beginning of the summit, rather
than at the end, which was the usual practice, and despite the
United States’ boycott. Leaders also addressed the importance of
climate change and several key global challenges.

Bank of Thailand chief wants weaker baht

Vitai Ratanakorn sees room to cut interest rates to give sluggish economy a lift

Vitai Ratanakorn sees room to cut interest rates to give sluggish economy a lift

“The central bank wants to see the baht weaken to an appropriate level that reflects the true state of our economy,” governor Vitai Ratanakorn told reporters on Saturday.
“The central bank wants to see the baht weaken to an appropriate level that reflects the true state of our economy,” governor Vitai Ratanakorn told reporters on Saturday.

Bank of Thailand governor Vitai Ratanakorn said on Saturday that a weaker baht would be beneficial for the economy, and that there was room to cut interest rates if needed to support growth.

The baht has gained about 6% against the US dollar so far this year, becoming Asia’s second-best performing currency. The baht’s strength has posed a threat to exports and tourism.

“The central bank wants to see the baht weaken to an appropriate level that reflects the true state of our economy,” Mr Vitai told reporters at an event in Chiang Mai, without mentioning a specific level.

“I think the baht can weaken further,” he said, adding that the strength of the currency had been driven by a weaker dollar and Thailand’s current account surplus.

The baht in September hit a four-year high, partly because of its high correlation with gold.

The “baht situation should improve next year” with the country’s current account surplus expected to narrow, Mr Vitai said.

He also said there was room to lower interest rates if needed. “We’re reviewing the data. There is room for a further cut.”

The headline inflation rate in Thailand has been in negative territory for the past seven months. Policymakers have attributed continued price declines to supply-side factors, rather than weak demand.

The central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee left its key rate unchanged at 1.50% on Oct 8, after cutting it four times in the past year.

The next rate meeting is on Dec 17, and some economists expect a further reduction.

The Thai economy has faced multiple headwinds, including US tariffs, high household debt and the strong baht.

The economy expanded just 1.2% on an annual basis in the third quarter, the weakest pace in four years. Compared with the second quarter of this year, GDP contracted by 0.6%.

The central bank predicts the economy will grow 2.2% this year and 1.6% next year. Last year’s growth was 2.5%.

The government of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has set up a “Connect the Dots” task force to investigate irregular money flows that may be fuelling the baht’s unusual strength despite Thailand’s poor economy.

The government has said it will set up a special team to track suspicious fund movements linked to online gambling, scam accounts, and other “grey money” transactions.

The Bank of Thailand is ready to use its policy tools if speculators are attracted to the baht and causing distortions in the currency, Mr Vitai said.

But he cautioned that the central bank can only manage to reduce currency volatility, not reverse exchange-rate trends.

The federal government has ordered the closure of 41 unity secondary schools over the surging security concerns across the country.

Tunji Alausa, the minister of education, in a statement, gave the directive to shut down the concerned schools following “recent security challenges” in parts of the country and the need to prevent breaches.

The directive was issued through a circular dated November 21, 2025, from the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to the circular signed by Hajia Abdulkadir, the director of senior secondary education, on behalf of the minister, all principals of affected schools are to enforce the closure without delay.

The 41 schools are in states across the North-West, North-East, North-Central, and parts of the South.

“Sequel to the recent security challenges in some parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breaches, the minister of education has approved the immediate closure of the listed Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) with immediate effect.

“Principals of affected colleges are to ensure strict compliance,” the circular, read in part.

The move came amid renewed mass abduction of students from learning institutions across the country.

Shalom Bamigboye, a technology founder and product strategist, has hailed the Nigeria Payment Stack (NPS) as “an enormous opportunity for payments and transactions across the country”. Speaking at the 2025 Kwara Build Tech Conference, Bamigboye highlighted the NPS’s potential to drive interoperability and transition Nigeria into full Open Banking.

The NPS, launched by the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), aims to unify and modernise Nigeria’s payment ecosystem. Its features include real-time transactions, instant settlements, advanced payment messaging, and enhanced security measures.

President Volodymyr Zelensky, together with several European
leaders, is working to amend key provisions of the US-proposed
peace plan ahead of the November 27 deadline,
Azernews reports, citing RBK-Ukraine and
Bloomberg.

According to the report, European partners are attempting to
secure additional time for Ukraine to refine a new ceasefire
framework with Russia, as concerns grow over the implications of
the plan put forward by US President Donald Trump.

The proposed 28-point plan envisions Ukraine recognizing Crimea,
Donbass and other occupied territories as part of Russia. It also
requires Kyiv to abandon its pursuit of NATO membership, although
it leaves room for deeper economic cooperation with the EU. In
exchange, Moscow would receive partial sanctions relief and the
chance to rejoin an expanded G8 format.

Other provisions include placing the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power
Plant under international oversight, dividing its energy output
between Russia and Ukraine, and reducing the size of the Ukrainian
army. Reconstruction efforts would rely partly on frozen Russian
assets, though mechanisms for this remain undefined.

Critics argue that the proposal heavily favors Moscow and risks
undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty, prompting Kyiv and European
leaders to push for significant revisions before any further steps
are taken.

Ukraine and US to discuss peace plan in Switzerland

KYIV – Representatives of Ukraine and the United States are preparing to meet in Switzerland to discuss Washington’s plan for ending the war with Russia, a Ukrainian negotiator said on Saturday.

US President Donald Trump has given Ukraine less than a week to approve the 28-point plan to end the nearly four-year conflict, which would result in the invaded country ceding territory, cutting its army and pledging to never join NATO.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s European allies, who were not included in drafting the agreement, were scrambling at the G20 summit in South Africa to come up with a counter-offer to Trump’s plan to beef up Kyiv’s positions.

“In the coming days in Switzerland we are launching consultations between senior officials of Ukraine and the United States on the possible parameters of a future peace agreement,” Rustem Umerov, who is on Ukraine’s negotiating team, wrote on social media.

“This is another stage of the dialogue that has been ongoing in recent days and is primarily aimed at aligning our vision for the next steps,” added Umerov, a former defence minister, who is now the Secretary of the Security Council.

He previously led a few rounds of negotiations with Russia in Turkey, which yielded no breakthrough. This time, Zelensky appointed his top aide, Andriy Yermak, to lead the team, according to a presidential decree.

The decree said the talks will also include “representatives of the Russian Federation.”

There was no immediate confirmation from Russia whether it would join the talks.

‘Just peace’

In a joint declaration, the G20 leaders called for a “just, comprehensive and lasting peace”, but not only in Ukraine, but also in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the “Occupied Palestinian Territory”.

France’s Emmanuel Macron sent a somber message to the gathering, saying “the G20 may be coming to the end of a cycle”, adding that the grouping was struggling to resolve major crises around the world.

He referred specifically to a new unilateral US plan to end the war in Ukraine that accepts some of Russia’s hardline demands.

Shortly before that, Macron met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the sidelines the summit, boycotted by the US, to discuss a joint response to Washington’s plan.

Starmer had earlier said the aim was to “look at how we can strengthen this plan for the next phase of negotiations”.

Difficult choice

Ukraine faces one of the most challenging moments in its history, Zelensky said in an address to the nation, adding that he would propose alternatives to Trump’s proposal.

“The pressure on Ukraine is one of the hardest. Ukraine may face a very difficult choice: either the loss of dignity or the risk of losing a key partner,” Zelensky said in his address, referring to a possible break with Washington.

To end the war, the US plan envisages recognising territories controlled by Moscow as “de facto” Russian, with Kyiv pulling troops out of parts of the Donetsk region.

Ukraine would also cap its army at 600,000, rule out joining NATO and have no troops from the alliance deployed to its territory.

In return, Ukraine would get unspecified “reliable security guarantees” and a fund for reconstruction using some Russia assets frozen in foreign accounts.

While Russia would gain territory, be reintegrated into the global economy and rejoin the G8, according to a draft of the plan.

Putin said the blueprint could “lay the foundation” for a final peace settlement, but threatened more land seizures if Ukraine walked away from negotiations.

Better equipped and larger in numbers, the Russian army is slowly but steadily gaining ground across the lengthy front line.

Ukrainians were meanwhile facing one of the toughest winters since the war began, after Moscow carried out a brutal bombing campaign against energy infrastructure.

This comes as a sweeping corruption probe that unveiled graft in the energy sector was unravelling in Kyiv, sparking public outcry.
