The tragic real-life story of the Von Erich brothers is brought to life by director Sean Durkin in this harrowing true family drama about love and loss. During the 1980s, the Von Erich family was a formidable presence in the world of wrestling, but they were “cursed” by numerous tragedies in their family. Despite the unthinkable losses that they endure (which is to the extent that one death actually had to be cut from the film), they remain committed to one another and to wrestling stardom.
The film features a gut-wrenching performance from Zac Efron in the role of Kevin Von Erich, who proves that he is well past his teen heartthrob era and has evolved into a genuinely talented actor. The sharp, nuanced script is powerful and affecting, and will leave you a puddle of tears by the end (or, perhaps, through much of the film).

In 1994, figure skater Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie) is implicated in a plot to injure her competition, and the life that the working-class athlete struggled to achieve since she was a child suddenly comes crashing down. I, Tonya takes things all the way back in Harding’s life, showing her difficult childhood and reputation as “white trash,” which forces her to fight her way to being taken seriously in the figure-skating world.
Robbie’s portrayal of Harding was hailed as strong and weighty, while Allison Janney’s performance as Harding’s abusive mother, LaVona, earned her an Academy Award. With a killer soundtrack and superb direction from Craig Gillespie, I, Tonya is both supremely entertaining while being a scathing takedown of classicism in America.
In 1980, director Martin Scorsese brought the controversial life of boxer Jake LaMotta to the screen, with Robert De Niro in one of the best roles of his career. Adapted from LaMotta’s own memoir, Raging Bull tells the rise-and-fall story of the middleweight boxer: how he rises through the ranks to take home the middleweight crown and is eventually destroyed by his own personal demons.
While it met with polarized reviews when it was released, the film has come to be recognized as one of Scorsese’s best works. Often difficult to watch, the film is a no-holds-barred examination of masculinity, repression and the occasional impossibility of human redemption. In addition to De Niro as LaMotta, the film features an excellent performance from Joe Pesci.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has expressed deep disappointment over the government’s continued delay in implementing the new salary structure for recently promoted teachers across the country.
According to TUM’s Secretary General, Charles Kunchenga, the union is concerned that the government has not yet acted on the long-awaited salary adjustments despite several appeals and assurances.
Kunchenga noted that the situation is particularly frustrating because the issue of teachers’ welfare continues to be ignored even as the country approaches another election period.
He emphasized that teachers feel neglected, as the government has not honored its commitment to improve their working conditions, especially for those who have been promoted but are still receiving salaries equivalent to their previous grades.
The TUM Secretary General further pointed out that this delay demotivates hardworking teachers who continue to serve under difficult circumstances in both rural and urban schools.
He added that last year, the government also failed to raise teachers’ salaries, a move that has further deepened frustration within the education sector.
The union expressed concern that education continues to receive low priority despite being one of the most critical sectors for national development.
These remarks were made today as the Teachers Union of Malawi joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Teachers’ Day — a day set aside to celebrate and honor the dedication, resilience, and contribution of teachers.
While the day is meant to inspire hope and appreciation for the teaching profession, many Malawian teachers say they have little to celebrate due to the persistent challenges they face.
The Teachers Union of Malawi has since called on the government to urgently address the issue of delayed salary adjustments and ensure that all promoted teachers are placed on the appropriate pay scale without further delay.
The union has reaffirmed its commitment to continue advocating for the welfare and dignity of all teachers in Malawi, stressing that quality education can only be achieved when educators are treated with fairness and respect.

KADOMA-(MaraviPost)-Two former Zimbabwean football stars, Abbas Amidu and Reuben Mhlanga, are facing serious legal troubles after being arrested for alleged drug trafficking.
The duo, once celebrated figures in the country’s football circles, were apprehended by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on October 3rd along the Kwekwe-Kadoma highway while transporting a massive consignment of cannabis.
According to police reports, Amidu a former Caps United and Black Leopards (South Africa) striker and Mhlanga, who previously played as a defender for Dynamos FC, were found in possession of approximately 750 kilograms of cannabis with an estimated street value of US$75,000.
The drugs were reportedly concealed in sacks and hidden within a truck believed to be traveling from the country’s western border region toward Harare.
ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests, revealing that the operation was the result of a coordinated effort between the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Drugs and Narcotics unit and officers stationed at Kwekwe.
“Our team acted on intelligence that a large consignment of dangerous drugs was being transported through the Kwekwe-Kadoma route. Upon intercepting the vehicle, a thorough search led to the discovery of 750 kilograms of dagga,” he said.
He added that both suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to appear in court soon to face charges of possession and trafficking of dangerous drugs, offenses that carry lengthy prison sentences under Zimbabwe’s Dangerous Drugs Act.
Amidu, aged 33, is the younger brother of former Warriors and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Khama Billiat. Once regarded as a promising talent, his football career took him across borders to Egypt and South Africa before fading out of the spotlight in recent years.
Mhlanga, on the other hand, made his name as a no-nonsense defender for Dynamos during the mid-2010s before retiring to pursue small business ventures in Harare.
Sources close to the investigation suggest that the pair might have been working with a wider network of traffickers operating between Zimbabwe and neighboring countries, using long-distance routes to smuggle drugs into urban centers.
Police are said to be pursuing additional suspects believed to be part of the operation.

Aaron Phypers’ cousin Kathleen McAllister is supporting Denise Richards’ allegations of abuse.
McAllister made a virtual appearance during a Monday, October 6, court hearing focused on Richards’ request to have a temporary restraining order against her estranged husband made permanent. Per People, McAllister alleged that she witnessed her cousin assaulting Richards in January 2022. At the time, she was working in Phypers’ wellness center in Malibu.
“I saw Aaron hit Denise and immediately she had a really bad black eye,” she claimed on Monday. “I’m literally in shock now to this day about it.”
McAllister, who claimed that Phypers struck Richards with the palm of his hand, added that The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum was “in shock. I was in shock.”
Denise Richards Calls Ex Aaron Phypers’ Mom to Testify in Divorce
According to McAllister, the exes had been quarreling: Phypers, 53, accused Richards, 54, of installing “listening devices” in his office. She claimed “there was alcohol mixed in,” which heightened an “evening of chaos and arguing [that] kept escalating.”
Both Richards and Phypers appeared in a Los Angeles court Monday amid their bitter legal battle. The latter filed for divorce on July 7 after six years of marriage. Phypers demanded that Richards pay monthly spousal support, after which Richards asked for a temporary restraining order. She claimed that “Aaron would frequently violently choke me, violently squeeze my head with both hands, tightly squeeze my arms, violently slap me in my face and head.” The court granted her request.
Speaking to the court on Monday, McAllister detailed a separate altercation that took place in Phypers’ office in March 2021. Richards, she claimed, “hid in the bathroom” from her husband.
“Aaron was terrorizing her, and she was looking for support,” she said, per People. “I was in my office, and she was texting from the bathroom.”

McAllister characterized the first few months of 2022 as an alleged “period of escalating abuse” and “yelling and arguing.” She claimed to have heard Phypers threaten to kill Richards “several times,” and described being fearful for her life as well as Richards.’
“We both were,” she said, claiming, “He threatened to kill us.”
McAllister alleged that Phypers “would be raging and threatening that if we told anybody, he’d kill us all. As abuse escalated through the years, he exploited our empathy.”
Us Weekly has reached out to Phypers for comment.
Denise Richards Details July 4th Fight With Aaron That Led to Divorce
Phypers has denied Richards’ allegations that he was abusive during the marriage, previously telling Us in a statement, “These accusations are completely false and deeply hurtful.”
He alleged, “Denise and I, like many couples, have faced our share of challenges, but any suggestion of abuse is categorically untrue. I have always tried to approach our marriage with love, patience, and respect. I ask for privacy as we navigate personal matters, and I hope that the public and media will refrain from spreading harmful and baseless claims.”
The former couple will be in court through Wednesday, October 8.
