Upbeat for Malawi ahead Brazil’s COP30 summit

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Dr Yusuf Mkungula has urged those scheduled to attend Thirtieth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), scheduled to take place in Belém, Brazil, from 10th to 21st November 2025, to be organised and speak with one voice.

Dr Mkungula said this in Lilongwe on Thursday during the second National Stakeholders preparatory meeting.

He said the 30th Session of the Conference of Parties has the unique benefit of building on the significant outcomes of COP 29, with the Global Stocktake outcomes clearly highlighting the need for more ambitious national targets, whilst noting that there is a significant gap in achieving the 1.5 Degrees Celsius temperature target.

“For Malawi, as a climate-vulnerable Least Developed Country, COP 30 is a platform to ensure our voice is heard and our priorities include: climate finance, adaptation ambition, loss and damage, just energy transition, and nature-based solutions.

“It is due to this spirit that we have successfully chaired the Least-Developed Countries (LDC) Group since 2024, and I would like to encourage all to invoke the same spirit as we attend COP 30 to make our voice heard as Malawi, and as a member of the LDC group, as well as the African Group all falling into the group of G77 and China,” said Dr Mkungula.

The Principal Secretary encouraged participants to approach COP 30 with a full understanding of Malawi’s position, national priorities, challenges, and gaps as they participate in the negotiations and various multilateral and bilateral engagements.

Rabi Gaudo, UNDP’s Resilience and Sustainable Growth Portfolio Manager, commended the Government of Malawi for its strong leadership in coordinating national climate action, which is the very foundation upon which global climate ambition is built.

Gaudo said the preparatory meeting is a vital step in ensuring that Malawi enters the negotiations with a unified, coherent, and impactful voice.

“The impacts of climate change on Malawi are profound and far-reaching. Increasingly frequent droughts, floods, and unpredictable rainfall patterns continue to erode hard-won development gains, threaten food security, and deepen socio-economic inequalities.

“These effects weigh most heavily on the most vulnerable among women, young people, and marginalised communities. As we look toward COP30, our shared task is clear: to turn commitments into concrete, sustainable action,” he said.

Gaudo added that Malawi must move beyond negotiating positions alone and ensure that climate action is visible, measurable, and transformative, adding that solutions being championed must be inclusive, equitable, and innovative, ensuring that no one is left behind.

He added,” COP30 represents a critical milestone in global climate diplomacy. It will set the trajectory for the next decade of climate action, guided by the enhanced ambition of the third cycle of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

“For Malawi, this is an opportunity not only to present its revised NDCs but also to show how our strategies are both aligned with global targets and rooted in national realities”.

White House Shutdown Cuts, Government Services Interrupted, Gaza City Evacuation

President Trump’s budget director is canceling billions in projects and threatening mass layoffs as the White House uses the government shutdown to push for deeper spending cuts. The shutdown’s ripple effects are spreading nationwide, with key federal services slowing or stopping. And in Gaza, Israel has issued a final evacuation order, warning that anyone who remains in Gaza City will be treated as a militant as Hamas considers changes to Trump’s ceasefire plan.

What’s Next for Chicago Fire’s Kidd and Severide After Shocking Baby Loss?

Chicago Fire’s Stella Kidd and Kelly Severide’s road to parenthood was upended once again during the season 14 premiere — so what’s next for the couple?

Warning: Spoilers below from Chicago Fire season 14, episode 1.

During the Wednesday, October 1, of Chicago Fire, fans learned that Kidd’s season 13 finale pregnancy reveal was not meant to be. After Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Severide (Taylor Kinney) met with their doctor, Kidd was told that she suffered a miscarriage just one week after she took the pregnancy test.

“The good news is that there’s nothing in the exam or the labs to suggest any issues that would stop you from having a healthy pregnancy in the future,” the doctor told them, but Kidd was visibly in shock over the news.

Severide responded, “That’s great to hear,” but Kidd was in a fog. After the appointment, Kidd started to cry and apologized to her husband, thinking out loud, “I should’ve waited a couple days to tell you or taken another test.”

“You don’t have to apologize for anything. We’re in this together. Every step of the way,” Severide replied, trying to reassure Kidd that it’s OK that the pregnancy didn’t work out. (Last season, the couple also experienced heartbreak when their adoption of a baby fell through at the last minute.)

At the end of the season 14 premiere, Kidd and Severide received a surprise visit from Terry, who was previously in charge of their failed baby adoption.

Instead of proposing a new baby for the couple to care for, he asked them if they’d be “willing” to meet a teenager who is about to be removed from his group home and become his foster parents.

‘Chicago Fire’ Season 14 Questions Answered: Will Carver and Violet Last?

The episode ended with the firefighters stunned by the concept, which showrunner Andrea Newman revealed is exactly what they wanted for Kidd and Severide this season.

Newman exclusively told Us Weekly and Give Me My Remote on Thursday, September 25, that Kidd’s “hesitations” about getting pregnant — partly because she was raised by her aunt after her parents’ deaths as a teen — was “haunting” her when she discovered she was expecting so soon after the failed adoption.

“We all saw how Severide reacts, and he is so happy and so joyous. So in that moment, any hesitation [Kidd] had, and seeing him react that way went out the window, but that’s still underneath,” Newman shared. “We thought it would be interesting to explore for Kidd [that] when she finds out the pregnancy has not stayed around, she’s carrying guilt for that. She’s carrying guilt because she knew that she wasn’t 100 percent in the way that Severide was 100 percent.”

One Chicago’s Most Memorable Couples

The showrunner explained that moving forward Kidd and Severide will be “shifting gears” and learning in the moment that “there’s no way to plan every step” of becoming parents.

“They had one story in their head of what family was going to look like, and now a new story is going to be written for them,” Newman teased, noting that Kidd helping Natalie, a teen she saved as a child from a fire, during season 13, and losing her own parents as a teenager will continue to shape that story.

She added, “At the end of the day, it’s a lot of obstacle courses and wrenches thrown in a couple that you know is very much in love — but there’s always going to be challenges that come with being a parent, and that’s very much so for them and how they manage this.”

Chicago Fire airs on NBC Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET.

Nina Dobrev Breaks Silence on Zac Efron Dating Rumors

Nina Dobrev is breaking her silence on the rumors that she and Zac Efron are romantically linked following her split from Shaun White.

Dobrev, 36, was asked by TMZ on Wednesday, October 1 about Efron, 37, after photos of the pair looking cozy on vacation went viral last month. The snaps came just one week after news emerged of the TVD alum’s split from White, 39, after five years together.

“Anything to that Zac Efron thing?” a TMZ reporter asked Dobrev, who shook her head no in response.

“You’re just mates?” the reporter asked in a follow-up question. Confirming that was the case, Dobrev replied, “Yeah.”

The actress also shared how she was dealing with facing a breakup in the public eye, revealing her stance on what’s next.

“You know what? I’m excited for the future and the only thing that’s guaranteed is change,” she told the outlet.

Rumors began to swirl that Dobrev and Efron were romantically linked when they were spotted together in Europe during a spate of recent outings.

They both attended crypto billionaire Brad Garlinghouse‘s wedding in the South of France on September 20 and appeared separately in mutual friend Keleigh Teller’s Instagram Stories from the big day.

The same weekend, Dobrev and Efron were photographed onboard a yacht with Chase Crawford, Keleigh and her husband, Miles, per photos obtained by Deux Moi.

The Daily Mail published photos on September 18 of Dobrev and Efron swimming in the sea just off the Italian coastline — fueling romance rumors even further.

Despite the speculation, an insider confirmed to Us Weekly last month that Dobrev and Efron are not an item and that their relationship is purely platonic.

“Nina and Zac are not dating and have been good friends for over a decade,” a source exclusively told Us. “Their friends always joke that they should date, but that is not what is going on. They have been there for each other through many phases of life and have always had each other’s back.”

Us Weekly learned in September that Dobrev and White had called off their engagement after five years together.

Dobrev and White initially sparked dating speculation in February 2020. Us broke the news two months later that they were officially together.

Inside Nina Dobrev and Shaun White’s ‘Next Steps’ After Their Split: Source

The snowboarder popped the question to Dobrev with a five-carat ring from designer Lorraine Schwartz at The Golden Swan in New York City in October 2024.

After their split, a source told Us exclusively that Dobrev was heartbroken about her relationship with the Olympian ending.

“Nina is devastated,” the insider shared. “They had finally started planning the wedding and things were in motion.”

In October 2021, White opened up to Us about their relationship, which was long distance at the time.

“We have a nice little system of how to stay in touch,” he explained. “Plane tickets are pretty much booked for any opportunity that we can go see one another. So, I know during the holiday break, we’re going to meet up, and we’re going to meet up again probably around Christmas time. Anything that happens in between, then I’ll jet over and see her. You just make it work.”

He added: “I think that’s the goal of it all and the key to it all is just making the time. [Nina’s] super organized and on top of it, so I give it to her. She always finds a way to make it happen.”

UGI contributes MK4.5 million to IIM annual conference

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-United General Insurance Company Limited (UGI) has donated MK4.5 million to the Insurance Institute of Malawi (IIM) to support its upcoming annual conference, set for October 2 to 3.

Speaking during the symbolic cheque presentation on Tuesday, UGI Sales and Marketing Manager Golden Jamu, said the decision to support the conference was because IIM’s mission of promoting professionalism and excellence in the insurance sector aligns with UGI’s core values.

“We believe this support will help foster professionalism and excellence within the sector. The conference also provides a vital platform to tackle challenges such as climate change, which has disrupted the industry and severely affected farmers, one of our key client groups,” said Jamu.

He further noted significant changes in the insurance landscape, including the entry of Banks into the industry, stressing the importance of dialogue and collaboration to adapt to the evolving environment.

“There have been a lot of changes in the industry in terms of how insurances are provided, as you know previously the insurance was being done between insurers, brokers and customers but now we have Banks that are also providing insurance,” he added.

IIM Vice President Kondwani Kainga who received the cheque on behalf of the association expressed gratitude for UGI’s continued sponsorship.

“We are very grateful for the donation we have received. UGI has been a consistent supporter of our initiatives, and this contribution shows their commitment to strengthening the insurance industry in Malawi,” he said.

Kainga said this year’s conference will be held under the theme ‘Innovate, Adapt, Thrive, Survive: Insurance in Malawi in the Face of Disruptions.’

Inspired by challenges such as Cyclone Freddy and other calamities, the theme calls on the industry to innovate and collaborate to provide effective risk transfer solutions and enhance resilience for Malawians.

“As we know, the nation has faced many challenges, including Cyclone Freddy. Insurance, as a risk transfer mechanism, provides solutions, and we must adapt to changing times to serve the people of Malawi and beyond. To achieve this, we need to be resilient, adapt, innovate, and collaborate as an industry,” said Kainga.

Over 200 delegates, including local and international representatives, are expected to attend.

Lazarus Chakwera: A pastor whose legacy remains in shambles after messing up Malawi (2020–2025)

In June 2020, Malawi elected Lazarus Chakwera, a former Assemblies of God pastor, as president.

His rise to power was seen by many as a beacon of hope for change and reform.

However, his administration faced significant challenges that highlighted the complexities of religious leaders transitioning into political leadership.

One of the primary issues was the lack of political experience among clergy-turned-politicians.

Chakwera’s background in theology did not equip him with the necessary skills to navigate the intricacies of governance.

This gap in political acumen led to difficulties in policy formulation and implementation.

Additionally, the administration struggled with managing a diverse and often fragmented coalition government.

The Tonse Alliance, which supported Chakwera’s presidency, was composed of various political parties with differing ideologies.

This diversity, while beneficial in some respects, led to internal conflicts and a lack of cohesive policy direction.

Economic mismanagement became another significant concern.

Despite promises to revitalize the economy, Malawi experienced high inflation rates, food shortages, and increased poverty levels.

These economic challenges were compounded by natural disasters such as Cyclone Freddy and subsequent droughts, which devastated agriculture and infrastructure.

Corruption within the administration further eroded public trust.

High-profile scandals and the perceived failure to address corruption allegations tarnished the government’s image.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), tasked with combating graft, faced its own challenges, including leadership changes and allegations of misconduct.

The education sector also suffered under Chakwera’s leadership.

Despite promises to improve education, the sector remained underfunded and struggled to meet the needs of a growing student population.

Healthcare, another critical area, did not see the anticipated improvements.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the weaknesses in the healthcare system, with inadequate resources and infrastructure to handle the crisis.

Chakwera’s administration also faced criticism for its handling of fuel shortages and energy crises.

The government’s response was often seen as reactive rather than proactive, leading to public dissatisfaction.

Religious leaders who had supported Chakwera’s candidacy began to express their disillusionment.

The Catholic Bishops Conference accused his administration of leading the nation not to prosperity but to “Bagamoyo,” a metaphor for betrayal.

This criticism reflected the growing frustration among religious communities with the government’s performance.

In the 2025 presidential election, Chakwera was defeated by former President Peter Mutharika, who secured 57% of the vote.

Mutharika’s return to power was seen as a rejection of Chakwera’s leadership and a desire for a return to stability.

The election results underscored the challenges of governance faced by religious leaders in political office.

The disadvantages of pastors leading a nation are evident in Malawi’s recent history.

While their moral authority can inspire hope, the complexities of governance require a diverse skill set that extends beyond religious training.

In conclusion, while religious leaders can play a vital role in shaping national values and ethics, their transition into political leadership must be accompanied by a comprehensive understanding of governance, economics, and diplomacy.

Without this, the nation may face the disadvantages witnessed in Malawi from 2020 to 2025.
