Rooney questions Amorim’s leadership at Manchester United

MANCHESTER-(MaraviPost)-Wayne Rooney has delivered a stinging assessment of Manchester United under manager Ruben Amorim, claiming he no longer recognises the club he once captained and achieved legendary status with.

The former United striker, who won five Premier League titles and a Champions League medal at Old Trafford, expressed his disappointment over the direction of the club, saying Amorim has failed to inspire belief both in the squad and among supporters.

“I don’t recognise the whole football club. There’s no identity, no structure, no fight. I don’t see the passion that defined Manchester United when I played there.

“Honestly, I don’t have faith that Amorim is the man to turn it around,” Rooney said in an interview with British Media.

Amorim was appointed during the summer after United parted ways with Erik ten Hag but results have been far from convincing.

The team has struggled in the league, dropping crucial points and failing to establish consistency.

Rooney argued that the problems at Old Trafford go beyond individual players, suggesting a lack of clarity in coaching and strategy.

“You look at the performances, you look at the body language of the players and you have to ask yourself: what is the plan? Where are we going?” he questioned.

United fans, already frustrated by years of decline since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, have been divided over Amorim’s appointment.

Many had hoped his successful spell at Sporting Lisbon would translate into a fresh approach in Manchester but so far the optimism has faded.

Rooney’s comments add to the mounting pressure on Amorim, whose future is already being debated just months into his reign.

Critics argue that the club lacks not only a tactical identity but also the resilience that once made it the most feared side in England.

The ex-England captain urged the club hierarchy to reassess their long-term vision.

“The fans deserve better. This isn’t about one bad game or one bad season. It’s about what Manchester United stands for. And right now, I don’t see it,”he added.

While some supporters believe Amorim should be given time to rebuild, Rooney’s blunt remarks highlight the growing impatience surrounding Old Trafford.

After six Premier League matches, Manchester United find themselves in 14th position on the table with just seven points, having won two games, drawn once and lost three.

Bankers knock out holders to open FDH Bank Cup semifinals account

…..Eagles 0-3 Silver

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The central Bankers have progressed to the 2025 FDH Bank Cup semifinals following their commanding 3-0 victory over holders Blue Eagles on Thursday at Nankhaka Stadium in the capital, Lilongwe.

Silver Strikers, which have just qualified for the second round of the CAF Champions League, showed their class over the home side and appeared tactically outmatched.

The Bankers controlled possession for the majority of the match.

Nickson Mwase opened the scoring in the 38th minute of the first half with a powerful header after receiving a long throw-in from right-back MacDonald Lameck.

Andrew Joseph and Zebron Kalima posed a constant threat to the home side, terrorizing the Eagles defense several times in the first half.

In the 13th minute, Joseph missed a clear chance for the Bankers when he received a beautiful delivery from MacDonald Lameck but fired his effort off target.

Eagles also came close to scoring on several occasions. In the 9th minute, the home side won a free kick close to the box following a foul by Nickson Mwase on Tonic Viyuyi.

Gustavo curved the ball into the box, but Mwase rescued his side with a brilliant clearance.

In the 36th minute, Eagles captain Gilbert Chirwa sustained a head injury following a collision with a Silver player, and play was paused.

Both sides kept pushing for goals until the whistle blew for the end of the first half.

In the second half, both teams started on a high note as they looked to book their place in the semifinals.

However, it was Eagles who won a corner kick in the 49th minute following a foul on John Banda by Nickson Mwase.

Banda struck the ball into the box, but it was well defended by Maxwell Paipi.

In search of goals, Eagles coach Deklek Msakakuona made his first substitution, bringing on Lanken Mwale for Micium Mhone, who seemed off the pace, in the 54th minute.

Silver Strikers doubled their lead through new signing Ernest Petro, who cleverly connected with a long pass from Nickson Mwase in the 57th minute.

The goal energized the visitors as they controlled the game, exchanging passes in their own half while penetrating in the attacking third.

As the match progressed, Nickson Mwase, who stood firm in Silver’s defense, got injured and play was temporarily paused as medics attended to him.

Silver head coach Peter Mgangira made a triple substitution as Zebron Kalima, Binwell Katinji, and Uchizi Vunga were replaced by Stain Davie, Chinsinsi Maonga, and Chikondi Kamanga.

His opposite number, Deklek Msakakuona, responded by introducing Andrew Mapemba and Webster Mzunda for Tonic Viyuyi and John Banda.

In the 77th minute, the home team won a free kick in Silver’s half.

Lanken Mwale took it quickly but the ball went off target.

Gilbert Chirwa was seriously injured again in the 82nd minute, and play was once more paused. The coach replaced him with Matias Nyirenda.

As part of their game management, Silver coach Mgangira made two more changes, taking off MacDonald Lameck and Andrew Joseph for Emmanuel Allan and Innocent Shema.

With these changes, the Bankers, who were humiliated by Eagles in the last edition of the cup when they were knocked out in the round of 16 ensured they never surrendered their lead and secured sweet revenge over the cops.

Just minutes later, Emmanuel Allan extended Silver’s lead, putting the game beyond reach for the reigning champions.

He beat Eagles’ defenders and goalkeeper before slotting the ball into the empty net in the 90+3 minute.

Soon after the goal, the final whistle blew, confirming that Eagles had been knocked out of the competition in the quarterfinals and that the Bankers had opened their FDH Bank Cup semifinals account.

Reacting to the defeat, Blue Eagles head coach Deklek Msakakuona acknowledged the result, saying it was a difficult game in which his team struggled in many areas.

He promised to rectify their weaknesses ahead of league games and other cup competitions.

Silver Strikers head coach Peter Mgangira praised his players for their fighting spirit and for following instructions.

“We are happy we have won today and progressed to the semifinals. The boys gave their best. We will see where we finish, but we can’t talk about the championship yet,” he said.

In other quarterfinals, Check Sporting Club will play against Mighty Wanderers at Dimba Stadium in Mchinji, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets will take on Kamuzu Barracks, and Civil Service United FC will face rookies Mchinji Villa FC.

Abida Sidik Mia denies allegations of removing ESCOM transformer

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Deputy President Abida Sidik Mia has strongly denied allegations that she was involved in the removal of an electricity transformer belonging to ESCOM.

Mia, who previously served as Member of Parliament for Chikwawa–Nkombedzi and as Minister of Water and Sanitation in President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration, described the claims as politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing her reputation.

She insisted that no individual, including herself, has authority over ESCOM property, which is managed independently by the power utility.

“These are baseless accusations and nothing more than smear politics,” Mia said.

She further assured the public that she would ensure the truth comes to light and that justice prevails.

Reflecting on her record as a legislator, Mia emphasized that her work focused on delivering development projects rather than interfering with utility infrastructure.

“As Member of Parliament, my role was to bring development such as classrooms, hospitals, markets, police units, and other social amenities,” she explained.

She stressed that her service was centered on uplifting communities and improving people’s lives, not on undermining public institutions like ESCOM.

Mia expressed disappointment that political opponents were resorting to fabrications in an attempt to discredit her leadership.

She called on Malawians to reject divisive politics and instead focus on development and unity.

Her response comes amid heightened political tensions in Chikwawa, where accusations and counter-accusations have recently dominated public debate.

Observers note that the controversy highlights the challenges faced by politicians in balancing community expectations with national governance responsibilities.

Mia concluded by reaffirming her commitment to transparency, accountability, and service to the people.

She declared that her political journey will remain rooted in integrity and a focus on meaningful development.

NBM plc supports PRSM annual conference with MK8 million

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has given MK8 million to the Public Relations Society of Malawi (PRSM) in support of its annual conference, scheduled for October 30 to November 2, in Mzuzu.

Speaking during the cheque handover ceremony on Tuesday, NBM plc Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager, Akossa Hiwa, said the Bank has been a longstanding partner of PRSM, and remains impressed by the society’s commitment to capacitating public relations professionals in the country.

“We are appreciative of the role they are playing and we look forward to what will be discussed at the conference,” said Hiwa.

She further elaborated that the Bank believes the conference will create a platform for public relations practitioners to share knowledge and best practices.

“In the age of rapid information, high public expectations, and shifting perception, skilled communicators are the bridge to real information and reality; they serve the audience to see through the noise.”

“We are confident the conference will sharpen skills, provide fresh insight, and renew energy to take up the role as catalysts of change in Malawi. We hope that this year’s conference will go beyond discussions to include Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), reflecting NBM plc’s strong emphasis on communication with both internal and external stakeholders,” said Hiwa.

In her remarks, PRSM Vice President Rachel Kalera-Mhango expressed gratitude for the Bank’s generous support.

“They have been one of our longest supporters in various activities we hold, and this shows how committed they are to this profession and the work the society is doing. This year’s conference will be held under the theme ‘Building the Malawi we Want by 2063: Leveraging on Effective Strategic Communication as a Catalyst of Change’. The theme is aimed at creating a platform for PR practitioners to converge and share ideas and information related to Malawi’s 2063 vision.”

“We might talk about 2063 vision, but if there is no dedication in mindset change, we cannot achieve anything, so there has to be effective communication, that’s where PR comes in,” said Mhango.

As she becomes accustomed to her new surroundings and her cruel stepfather (Sergi López), Ofelia begins to stumble upon strange clues that suggest she has a magical destiny.

‘The Truman Show’ (1998)

In an age where corporations wield more power and reality feels more subjective by the day, The Truman Show feels more relevant than ever. Jim Carrey stars as Truman Burbank, a man who is adopted from infancy by a television network and raised for his entire life on a soundstage.

When Truman begins to notice the cracks in his world, a movement begins on the outside to free him from his artificial reality, while creator/director Christof (Ed Harris) becomes more determined than ever to keep Truman in his place. Alternating between funny and philosophical, The Truman Show is a movie about what is and isn’t real and what it means to be free.

10 Best Comedy Movies of the 2020s So Far, Ranked from Least to Greatest

‘The Worst Person in the World’ (2021)

Never mind that it’s Norwegian — this film is so deeply relatable that you’ll see yourself in it even if you’ve never been further north than Michigan. It’s a romantic dramedy that follows a young student named Julie (Renate Reinsve) as she tries to figure out her life. She goes from studying medicine to photography to writing, but that’s not nearly as challenging as sticking with a decision about her love life.

Torn between comic book artist Aksel (Anders Danielsen Lie) and barista Eivind (Herbert Nordrum), Julie makes mistakes at every turn, unable to resist choices that make her feel like the worst person in the world. Director Joachim Trier blends fantasy sequences with heartbreaking realism in this funny and clever movie.

‘Coming to America’ (1988)

Before rom-coms and cultural satire were regularly blended together, Coming to America nailed the formula. Eddie Murphy stars as Prince Akeem, heir to the throne of the wealthy African nation of Zamunda, who travels to Queens, New York, in search of true love. Alongside his loyal aide Semmi (Arsenio Hall), Akeem trades royal riches for working-class life at a fast-food restaurant, hiding his identity as he courts Lisa (Shari Headley).

The movie remains one of Murphy’s most beloved performances, packed with sharp social commentary, laugh-out-loud gags and unforgettable supporting characters. Decades later, its charm, humor and genuine romance still hold up beautifully.

‘Girls Trip’ (2017)

Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish? You don’t really need anything other than the cast list to know that this movie will rock, but it might help to know that it was written by black-ish creator Kenya Barris and his frequent collaborator Tracy Oliver. It follows four college besties (known as “the Flossy Posse”) who reunite for the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.

A weekend of debauchery goes from bad to bananas, and old resentments come out as the misadventures continue. Let’s just say there’s a scene with a grapefruit that will stick with you forever. With its blend of raunchy humor and genuine friendship, Girls Trip is one of those great modern comedies you can rewatch anytime.

Paris and Janet Jackson Hug in Sweet Family Reunion at Paris Fashion Week

Paris Jackson had a sweet family reunion with her aunt, Janet Jackson, during Paris Fashion Week!

Michael Jackson’s only daughter was spotted greeting Janet, 59, outside the Tom Ford spring/summer 2026 fashion show in Paris on Wednesday, October 1.

The niece and daughter duo seemed delighted to see each other at the event as they embraced in a hug before walking into the venue together.

For the occasion, Paris, 27, wore a long-sleeved black dress with a daring waist-high split. She wore her long blonde hair loose and completed the look with black high heels.

Janet, meanwhile, was clad in all black as well, opting for a long black skirt and short-sleeved leather top that was belted at the waist. The “Rhythm Nation” singer rounded off her look with a black leather jacket, oversized gold hoop earrings and her hair in a tight bun.

Paris’ reunion with her aunt comes just a few months after she confirmed her split from Justin “Blue” Long in July. At the time, the Daily Mail published pictures of an emotional Paris looking upset during a walk. “Those are breakup tears,” Paris responded in a post on X.

Paris and Long reportedly began dating in June 2022. The King of Pop’s daughter confirmed their engagement in December 2024.

“Happy birthday, my sweet blue,” Paris wrote in an Instagram post. “Doing life with you these last years has been an indescribable whirlwind and I couldn’t dream of anyone more perfect for me to do it all with.”

She added, “Thank you for letting me be yours. I love you.”

As well as being a doting aunt to Paris and her brothers Prince, 28, and Bigi, 23, Janet is also mom to son Eissa, 8, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Wissam Al Mana.

“The most important thing I’ve done, the biggest thing I’ve done, is become a mother, and it’s had a beautiful impact on my life,” Janet said in a September 2024 interview with The Guardian.

“I wanted to have three children, but thought, ‘I should stop there, that’s probably all I can handle.’ Because you have to give all of yourself,” she continued. “Obviously, you have to work, but you don’t come first anymore. Your life completely changes. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

With a name like Disney+, you might mistakenly think that the streamer only peddles in children’s movies.

But that is decidedly not the case, and as the company now owns 21st Century Fox and its associated subsidiaries like Searchlight Pictures and the FX networks, it has an even larger array of more mature fare to choose from that you can’t find anywhere else.

Watch With Us combed through the Disney+ catalogues and picked the five best movies for adults that you can stream right now. From horror comedies to character dramas and artist biopics, there’s a little something for everyone.

‘Ready or Not’ (2019)

Grace (Samara Weaving) has just gotten married to the love of her life, Alex (Mark O’Brien), whose family happens to be ridiculously loaded. On their wedding day, she meets his intimidating, deeply dysfunctional family, heirs to a vast fortune in the board game industry. A bizarre tradition sees Grace draw from a deck of playing cards and pick a game that must be played by the whole family. She chooses “Hide and Seek,” thinking it to be innocent, but in reality, she must fight for her life as her husband’s family hunts her for sport.

This rollicking mix of horror, comedy and action did gangbusters at the box office upon its release, and for good reason. The film manages to balance a perfect mix of dark humor, genre subversions and entertaining action and terror, producing an all-around crowd-pleasing picture. The film was a hit with critics, too, who praised the film for its expert skill at offering social critique of the wealthy elite while succeeding as a vivacious popcorn flick. It can be difficult for a film to toe the line between smart and fun, but Ready or Not does it with confidence and style.

‘Tron’ (1982)

Before you hit the theater to check out the upcoming Tron: Ares, you have to go back to where it all began with the original Tron from the 1980s. The first Tron stars Jeff Bridges as computer engineer Kevin Flynn, and was notable at the time for being one of the first films to make extensive use of computer-generated imagery (otherwise known as CGI). The film was only a modest box office success but spurred a cult following and a subsequent media franchise, including comic books, video games, a TV series and two feature film sequels.

When Kevin Flynn realizes that his work is being stolen by an executive at his company, he tries hacking into the system. But his attempt causes him only to be transported into the software world of his computer. There, he must fight a series of programs to escape, including the digitized version of executive Ed Dillinger (David Warner), called Sark, along with the Master Control Program. Along his journey, he is aided by programs named Yori (Cindy Morgan) and Tron (Bruce Boxleitner), based on two of Kevin’s coworkers.

‘A Complete Unknown’ (2024)

The rise to fame of iconic folk musician Bob Dylan is told in this riveting film from Walk the Line director James Mangold, starring Timothée Chalamet as the “Like a Rolling Stone” singer himself.  A Complete Unknown is loosely based on the 2015 non-fiction book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald and features a supporting cast playing various folk music icons, such as Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez and Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash. The film received a number of Academy Award nominations — including Best Picture — and was praised by critics for its performances and solid direction.

A Complete Unknown begins with Dylan’s touchdown in New York City from his home in Minnesota, where he hitchhikes all the way to meet his ailing idol, Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy). From there, the aspiring singer manages to change the course of the 1960s with his hypnotic talent that perfectly captures the zeitgeist and catapults him from small-town boy into a worldwide celebrity. But the folk icon finds himself restless in his own milieu, and he makes a stylistic decision that changes the course of his career — and music history — forever.

‘The Devil Wears Prada’ (2006)

Editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), is a notoriously impossible boss to work for. When naive aspiring journalist Andrea “Andy” Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is hired as Miranda’s personal assistant, she is flung headfirst into the cutthroat world of the fashion industry. As Andy struggles to adapt to this inhospitable work environment — egged on by Miranda’s senior assistant, the petulant Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt) — she slowly learns to deal with Miranda’s demanding nature, and learns more about herself and what she wants from her life in the process.

The Devil Wears Prada has remained a staple of the pop culture collective consciousness for a reason, to the extent that a highly anticipated sequel film separated by two decades is set to be released next year. The film features several iconic performances, from the biting cruelty of Streep as Miranda to the kind honesty of Stanley Tucci as her art director, Nigel, and the breakout performance of Blunt. With its winking sense of humor, dynamite narrative and singular performances from a terrific cast, if you still haven’t seen The Devil Wears Prada, you still have plenty of time to right your wrongs before The Devil Wears Prada 2.

‘The Straight Story’ (1999)

Director David Lynch is most known for his surrealist dreams and nightmares as seen in films such as Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, and his acclaimed TV series Twin Peaks. But perhaps lesser-known is the quiet character study he directed in 1999 called The Straight Story, an adaptation of a real-life incident in which an Iowa man, Alvin Straight, drove 240 miles to Wisconsin on a lawnmower to see his ailing brother in 1994. What is easily Lynch’s most narratively simplistic film, it is also no less profound. It particularly excels in its realistic dialogue and committed performances, in particular from lead actor Richard Farnsworth.

7 Must-See Animated Movies For Adults, Ranked

Straight (Farnsworth) is an aging, ornery man who lives with his disabled daughter, Rose (Sissy Spacek), and rebuffs lifestyle suggestions from his doctor to improve his precarious health. Yet he receives a wake-up call when he finds out his brother, Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton), has suffered a stroke. Despite the fact that they have been estranged from one another for a decade, Straight understands that he doesn’t have much time left with his brother. With no other means of transportation, he decides to make the journey to Lyle at five miles per hour atop his riding mower.
