A magnitude 5.8 earthquake jolted waters off Davao Oriental on Saturday evening, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). In its latest update, the Phivolcs said the quake, which was of tectonic origin, occurred at 6:27 p.m.
Its epicenter was spotted 62 kilometers southeast of Manay, Davao Oriental, with a depth of 10 kilometers.
Intensity III is reported in the City of Mati, Davao Oriental.
Meanwhile, instrumental intensities were recorded in the following areas:
Intensity III – Sta. Maria, DAVAO OCCIDENTAL; Nabunturan, DAVAO DE ORO; Malungon, SARANGANI Intensity II – City of Digos, DAVAO DEL SUR; Alabel and Kiamba, SARANGANI; Tupi, SOUTH COTABATO; Palimbang, SULTAN KUDARAT
Phivolcs said damage to properties is expected, but aftershocks may not be possible following the tremor.
On Friday, two major quakes struck Manay, Davao Oriental-the first was the magnitude 7.4 at 9:43 a.m. and the second was the magnitude 6.8 tremor at 7:12 p.m.
Seven individuals died, and more than 8,000 others were affected by the earthquakes, according to the initial situational report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council this Saturday. /mr
