The University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue (UCLM) Baby Webmasters shocked the four-time defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles, 71-64, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Season 25 basketball tournament on Sunday, October 12, at the New Cebu Coliseum.
UCLM never looked back after sprinting to an early 15-6 lead, which it stretched to 11 points, 66-55, in the final six minutes on the way to grab the temporary lead in the juniors division with a 3-1 win-loss card.
Noe Lingoste paced UCLM with 12 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a steal.
Angel Edielon Cayobit produced a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Wade Adam Luche chipped in 10 points with four rebounds and two assists for the winning side.
Lian Kent Basa posted a game-high 19 points but to no avail as the Magis Eagles suffered their first loss after rousing a 2-0 start.
In the other high school matchup, Champ Davidson Brigoli dropped 20 points with two rebounds and two steals, while AJ Kyle de los Santos added 10 points as the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers improved to 3-2 after crushing the Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC)-Cebu Greywolves, 79-58.
In the collegiate category, the Benedicto College (BC) Cheetahs scored a bounce-back 64-56 win over the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu Fighting Maroons while the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars clobbered the USPF Panthers, 80-56.
Kenneth Babalcon showed the way for Benedicto College with 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Serge Gabines delivered a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds with six steals while Andrian Jay Tonacao contributed 10 points and six rebounds for the Cheetahs, who now hold a 4-1 slate.
On the other hand, Kyle Rueda sizzled with 18 points, six rebounds and two assists as the Jaguars evened their record at 2-2.
Christian Carl Sollano tossed in 10 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block while Alcher Obra tallied 10 markers, one rebound and two steals in the Jaguars back-to-back victories.
