A worker was killed when an improvised explosive device went off at a rubber plantation in Sumisip, Basilan yesterday.
John Roy Alvarez, 35, of the Mangal Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Development Cooperative died while being treated at the Basilan General Hospital in Isabela City.
Alvarez was tapping rubber latex at a farm located in Barangay Mangal when an explosion occurred at around 7:30 a.m., according to Sumisip police chief Capt. Jakaria Muin.
Meanwhile, a man was wounded after he was shot by the caretaker of another rubber plantation in Lamitan City.
Tahir Jadjuri, 58, was passing through the farm in Barangay Sengal when the suspect, identified as Manding Sumampil, engaged him in a spat.
Probers said that Sumampil, who was drunk, allegedly drew a gun and shot the victim before fleeing.
