Manila Water cuts water losses through quick leak repairs, efficiency

Manila Water maintained an average non-revenue water (NRW) level of 14.35 percent from January to September 2025, a figure comparable to standards in developed countries, the company said.

This performance reflects Manila Water’s consistent efforts in controlling water losses through proactive leak detection and swift response systems.

In September alone, the company delivered 44.32 million cubic meters of potable water to more than 1.2 million connections across its East Zone concession area.

During the same month, all 57 reported mainline pipe bursts (300mm and below) were repaired within 24 hours, surpassing the 95 percent target set by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System – Regulatory Office (MWSS-RO).

‘Our ability to keep NRW below 15% is a result of continuous investments in network monitoring and leak detection technologies, coupled with the dedication of our field teams who respond promptly to pipe bursts,’ said Dittie Galang, Corporate Communications Department Head at Manila Water.

Between 2022 and 2025, the company consistently maintained NRW levels close to or below its benchmark of 15 percent. NRW refers to water produced but not billed to customers due to leaks or illegal connections.

The firm noted that even a one-percent improvement in NRW can translate to savings of up to 14 million liters of water daily. It said the operational efficiency aligns with its broader objectives of water conservation, service reliability, and environmental stewardship.
