A storm surge warning was raised by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) in several areas in Palawan on Wednesday afternoon due to Typhoon Tino.
In its 2 p.m. advisory, Pagasa warned that a ‘minimal to moderate’ risk of storm surge may occur in the next 12 hours. An estimate of one to two meters of storm surge is possible in the low-lying coastal areas of the following:
Araceli
Busuanga
Coron
Culion
Dumaron
El Nido
Linapacan
Puerto Princesa City
Roxas
San Vicente
Taytay
Pagasa warned of ‘minimal to moderate damage’ to communities, coastal, and marine infrastructures and all marine-related activities.
With this, the agency advised residents to move to higher grounds and stay away from the coastal and storm surge-prone areas and cancel any marine-related activities.
‘The public and the disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and precautionary measures, and watch for the next storm surge information to be issued at 8:00 PM today,’ Pagasa noted.
According to the 2 p.m. bulletin, Pagasa said that Typhoon Tino was located 190 kilometers west of Coron, Palawan, as of 10 a.m. It slightly intensified as it was carrying a maximum wind speed of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 180 kph.
It was presently moving west-northwestward at 20 kph.
