Trade deficit up in first 9 months of year on annual basis

Cyprus’ trade deficit in January-September 2025 has recorded an increase compared to the corresponding period of 2024. According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the trade deficit was pound 5,884.2 mn in January-September 2025 compared to pound 4,787.0 mn in the corresponding period of 2024.

It adds that total imports of goods in September 2025 were pound 1,208.0 mn as compared to pound 986,3 mn in September 2024, recording an increase of 22.5%. Imports from other EU Member States were pound 612.5 mn and from third countries pound 595.5 mn, compared to pound 633.6 mn and pound 352.7 mn respectively in September 2024. Imports in September 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of pound 35.6 mn as compared to pound 30.4 mn in September 2024.

Total exports of goods in September 2025 were pound 497.4 mn as compared to pound 354.1 mn in September 2024, recording an increase of 40.5%. Exports to other EU Member States were pound 173.6 mn and to third countries pound 323,.8 mn, compared to pound 113.3 mn and pound 240.8 mn respectively in September 2024. Exports in September 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of pound 108.0 mn as compared to pound 42.2 mn in September 2024.

Total imports of goods in January-September 2025 amounted to pound 10,111.1 mn as compared to pound 8,768.0 mn in January-September 2024, recording an increase of 15.3%. Total exports of goods in January-September 2025 were pound 4,226.9 mn compared to pound 3,981.0 mn in January-September 2024, registering an increase of 6.2%.

The trade deficit was pound 5,884.2 mn in January-September 2025 compared to pound 4,787.0 mn in the corresponding period of 2024.

Meanwhile, total imports of goods amounted to pound 1,116.7 mn in August 2025 as compared to pound 981.8 mn in August 2024, recording an increase of 13.7%.

Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were pound 399.1 mn in August 2025 as compared to pound 193.9 mn in August 2024, recording an increase of 105.8%.

Domestic exports of industrial products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were pound 392.6 mn in August 2025 compared to pound 186.4 mn in August 2024. Domestic exports of agricultural products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were pound 5.8 mn in August 2025 compared to pound 6.8 mn in August 2024.

Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were pound 132.4 mn in August 2025 as compared to pound 96,9 mn in August 2024, recording an increase of 36.6%.

Main categories of exports of domestically produced goods for the period January-August 2025 (excl. stores and provisions for ships and aircraft), were mineral fuels and oils with value pound 1,667.6 mn, halloumi cheese with pound 262.9 mn and pharmaceutical products with pound 228.9 mn.
