The Geological Survey Department has announced that there is a gradual attenuation of the phenomenon concerning the seismic sequence in terms of the magnitudes of the earthquakes and their frequency of occurrence.
In a press release issued Friday, it adds that this does not exclude the occurrence of other large earthquakes, but the chances decrease over time.
The Department notes that a seismic sequence began in the wider area of Agia Marina Kelokedara, 20 kilometers northeast of the city of Paphos, on the morning November 12, 2025. Within the first five hours, two strong earthquakes measuring 5.2 and 5.3 on the Richter scale were recorded, which were strongly felt throughout Cyprus, especially in the districts of Paphos, Limassol and Nicosia, and were noticed on the coasts of the eastern Mediterranean.
The seismic sequence associated with these earthquakes was intense in terms of the number of earthquakes, with more than 200 recorded earthquakes from the same area within the last 48 hours, with dozens of felt earthquakes, of which 16 had magnitudes between 3.0 and 4.5, it says.
“Over the last 42 hours the sequence has been evolving smoothly and so far we observe a gradual attenuation of the phenomenon, in terms of the magnitudes of the earthquakes and their frequency of occurrence. This fact does not exclude the occurrence of other large earthquakes, but the chances of such a development decrease over time,” the Department adds.
