The court in Sembabule District has granted bail to Mr Mathias Nshemereire, who had been remanded on charges of stealing a cow.
Mr Nshemereire is the father of National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer for the Sembabule District Woman Member of Parliament seat, Nina-Roz Kankunda Sembabule Grade One Magistrate, Raymond Jagwe granted bail to Mzee Nshemereire after spending 11 days in jail.
Nshemerire and his colleague, John Nyamuhanga, pleaded not guilty to the charges last week before they were sent to Sembabule Prison. Prosecution alleges that the duo connived to steal a cow of a resident of Lutuunku in Lugusulu Sub-county in Sembabule District, where the Nshemereire also resides and allegedly hid it at Nyamuhanga’s home in the neighbouring Gomba District.
Mr Nshemereire was granted a cash bail of Shs1 million after his lawyer, Shamim Malende, asked the court to release him and presented substantial sureties.
The presiding magistrate adjourned the matter to December 2, 2025, when the case is expected to return to court after prosecution said investigations were still ongoing.
The musician turned politician told journalists that the case against her father is politically motivated, adding that by the time he was arrested on November 7, 2025, he was distributing her campaign materials, wondering how he would have been involved in stealing a cow.
‘We thank the magistrate who has granted him bail and got his freedom back, but we ask the court to act independently and try this case to the end so that the old man gets justice,’ she said,
