Shear line, amihan to drench Luzon on Saturday

Shear line and northeast monsoon, or amihan, will bring rains in parts of Luzon on Saturday, the state weather bureau said.

In its 5 a.m. weather forecast, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that the shear line, or the convergence of warm and cold winds, and amihan will prevail in the northern parts of Luzon.

Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina said that Cagayan, Kalinga, Apayao will experience high chances of rains due to the shear line. Meanwhile, the rest of Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, and parts of Ilocos Region will see light rains due to amihan.

Badrina also said that the rest of Luzon, particularly in Metro Manila, rest of Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) and Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan) and Bicol Region will experience localized thunderstorms in afternoon and evening. He added that for most parts of Luzon, generally fair weather will prevail in the morning until noon.

Meanwhile, high chances of rains are seen over Palawan due to the trough of Severe Tropical Storm Verbena (international name: Koto). Badrina noted that the tropical cyclone was last spotted 345 kilometers northwest of Pag-asa Island, Kalayaan, Palawan as of 3 a.m. carrying a maximum wind speed of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) and 115 kph.

Badrina also said that a huge part of Visayas will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms will also prevail over Mindanao.

While no gale warning is raised in any seaboards of the country, Badrina warned of moderate to rough sea conditions over Palawan and Northern Luzon.

He then shared that the possibility of formation of a tropical cyclone within two to three days is ‘less likely.’
