Residents of Nakasongola District are mourning the loss of two community leaders who were killed in a fatal hit-and-run crash on Tuesday.
The deceased have been identified as David Semanda, 35, a Gombolola Internal Security Officer (GISO), and Mande Robert, 60, the LC I Chairperson of Lwanga Village in Nakasongola Town Council. The two died on the spot after a vehicle rammed into their motorcycle on the Nakasongola Army Barracks Road in Molwe Village at 7PM.
According to the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the victims were riding a motorcycle, with Semanda as the rider and Mande as the passenger. They were heading towards Nakasongola Army Barracks when they were hit from behind by a speeding vehicle travelling in the same direction.
‘The impact was severe, and both victims died instantly. The driver did not stop to render assistance and fled the scene,’ ASP Twiineamazima said, adding that police are actively pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the suspect.
He further confirmed that a team of officers visited the scene and that investigations are ongoing. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Nakasongola HC IV Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow over what should have been a joyful festive season for the families of the victims and the wider Nakasongola Town Council community, where both men were respected leaders.
The crash adds to growing concerns over road safety during the festive season, a period often marked by increased traffic, night travel, and a rise in fatal road crashes.
Police statistics consistently indicate a spike in road carnage during the Christmas and New Year period, commonly attributed to speeding, drink-driving, and reckless road use.
Police in the Savannah Region have appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or have information about the suspect vehicle to come forward and assist investigations. Authorities have also reminded motorists to observe speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and exercise extra caution, especially at night.
‘As we celebrate the festive season, motorists are urged to prioritise safety over speed to prevent further loss of life,’ police said.
