The Guyana government has begun enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against mining operations that fail to meet statutory requirements.
The initiative, led by the Ministry of Natural Resources in collaboration with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Guyana Police Force, follows a directive from President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali to take decisive action against illegal mining activities.
Officials said the crackdown targets operations lacking the required licences and approvals from the GGMC Commissioner. Several mining operations have already been seized, minerals detained, and legal proceedings initiated against offenders found operating unlawfully.
The government said recent inspections revealed multiple small- and medium-scale gold mining operations functioning without the necessary statutory instruments.
Authorities indicated that the enforcement drive will be expanded nationwide as part of efforts to curb illegal and illicit activities within the mining sector and ensure sustainable management of Guyana’s natural resources.
‘We are committed to safeguarding our natural resources and ensuring that all mining operations adhere to the laws of the land,’ said Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat . ‘This zero-tolerance approach is essential for promoting a fair and sustainable mining industry in Guyana.’
The Ministry of Natural Resources has urged miners to comply with all legal and regulatory requirements, warning that failure to do so could result in severe penalties.
