Sanwo-Olu backs deputy Hamzat for Lagos top job

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday announced his endorsement of Obafemi Hamzat, his deputy, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election. The decision followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House in Marina, where Hamzat officially declared his intention to run for governor before members of the State Executive Council and prominent party leaders.

The meeting was attended by members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro, the former minister of state for defence, and Ganiyu Solomon. Sanwo-Olu told journalists that the endorsement reflects a consensus among the stakeholders present, adding that Hamzat is well-prepared and capable of leading Lagos State.

‘He is a man who has worked with me at the highest level of integrity, loyalty, commitment, support, and so I feel personally honoured and privileged that he has given me this honour to inform me,’ Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, whom he credited with the discovery of both himself and Hamzat, as well as their effective working relationship.
