Davao flood kills 1

One person was killed and close to 1,500 persons were affected by rampaging waters brought by heavy rains triggered by by the intertropical convergence zone, the police and the regional office of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council said.

The City Police Office identified the lone victim as Aaron James Pangaldine, 21, a resident of Manay, Davao Oriental, who was renting a house at New San Isidro, barangay Buhangin. He was electrocuted and then drowned at dawn Tuesday near his home.

The NDRRMC said flooded areas were mostly in Davao City and in Kiblawan, Davao del Sur. At least 1,437 residents were affected in the barangays of Matina Pangi, Matina Crossing, Buhangin, and Talomo in Davao City, and 32 in Kiblawan.

The heavy rainfall that lasted almost the entire night of Monday was aggravated by the rising sea waters which measured at 1.37 meters, or 4.49 feet by 6:53 pm of Monday.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the heavy downpour was caused by the intertropical convergence zone affecting Mindanao that brought cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms.

Most of floodwaters have subsided by dawn of Tuesday.
