Natural gas agreement with Egypt in line with international law and sovereign rights, sources in Nicosia tell CNA

Sources in Nicosia stress that the Republic of Cyprus is acting based on international law and its sovereign rights, commenting on reactions from the Turkish Cypriot side regarding the Cyprus-Egypt agreement in the field of natural gas. Cyprus and Greece are two states with geostrategic weight within the context of developments in the region, Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr Nicholas Ioannides, stressed on Saturday, addressing, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, a conference on ‘Geopolitical Dynamics of Greece-Cyprus: The Euro-Atlantic Dialogue in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East’, organised by AHEPA Cyprus.

Developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, Ioannides said, directly affect the region’s security architecture, energy policy, sea routes, migration, but also the general relationship between Europe and neighboring third countries.

A General Government surplus of pound 573.3 million or 1.5% of GDP was recorded in the preliminary fiscal results in the period of January-March 2026, which are prepared by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT) and were published on Monday. In comparison, during the same period of 2025 a surplus of pound 600.6 mn (1.6% of GDP) was recorded.

Cyprus among countries with low levels of discrimination against persons with disabilities, according to Eurostat

Cyprus is among the EU countries with the lowest rates of persons with disabilities reporting that they experienced discrimination when interacting with public services, according to data published by Eurostat on Monday. In particular, in 2024 the rate in Cyprus stood at 3.1%, the lowest in the European Union, tied with Italy. It is followed by Croatia (4.3%) and Hungary (4.5%). In contrast, the highest rates were recorded in Estonia (14.6%) and Spain (14.5%), while Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden also reported elevated levels, at 12.8%, 12.5% and 12.3% respectively.

Record number of candidates and parties for the Parliamentary Elections, CRO says

A record number of candidates and political parties have submitted their nomination on Wednesday for the 2026 Parliamentary Elections, according to Chief Returning Officer Elikkos Elia. Specifically, 753 candidacies and 19 parties have submitted their nominations. Hermes Airports: Aircraft load factors at 76% in April and rose to 80-85% after April 20

A 10.4% annual increase in registered unemployed recorded in April

The number of registered unemployed rose by 844 people, or 10.4%, at the end of April 2026, reaching 8,962 people, compared to April 2025, as announced on Wednesday by the Statistical Service, based on data maintained by the District Labour Offices. According to the Statistical Service, this increase is mainly attributed to to the sectors of accommodation and food service activities, administrative and support service activities, transportation and professional, scientific and technical activities.

Inflation up at 2.8% in April due to increases in fuel prices

Inflation went up in April, reaching 2.8%, according to the Statistical Service, mainly due to the increases recorded in the price of fuel. The Consumer Price Index in April 2026 increased by 1.73 points, reaching 102.80 units compared to 101.07 units in March 2026. According to CYSTAT, the largest increases compared with April 2025 were recorded in the economic categories Petroleum Products (18.3%) and Agricultural Goods (9.6%), while the largest decrease was observed in Electricity and Water (-7.9%).

Cyprus records highest prison overcrowding rate in the EU, according to Eurostat

Cyprus recorded the highest prison overcrowding rate in the European Union in 2024, according to data published by Eurostat on Thursday. More specifically, the prison occupancy rate in Cyprus reached 227.6 in 2024, the highest among all EU member states. Slovenia followed with 134.2 and France with 129.3. The lowest occupancy levels were recorded in Estonia at 49.9, Lithuania at 67.0 and Luxembourg at 67.4.

Cyprus records 6.1% annual increase in retail trade, according to Eurostat

Cyprus recorded a 0.5% increase in retail sales volume in March 2026 compared with February 2026, according to the first estimates published on Thursday by Eurostat on developments in retail trade in the European Union. On an annual basis, in March 2026 compared with March 2025, Cyprus registered a 6.1% increase in the calendar-adjusted retail sales index, marking one of the strongest performances among the EU Member States for which data are available.

Positive performance for Eurobank in the first quarter of 2026

Eurobarometer reflects economic pessimism, low trust in institutions in Cyprus

Economic pessimism, low trust in institutions, growing concern over developments in the Middle East and clear opposition to military support for Ukraine are reflected in the Eurobarometer survey published on Friday ahead of Europe Day. The Spring 2026 Eurobarometer survey was conducted between March 12 and April 1, 2026 and is based on 506 interviews in Cyprus, as part of an EU-wide sample of 26,415 citizens. Foot and mouth disease cases in two more units detected

Construction Materials Price Index up by 1.38% in April y/o/y

The Price Index of Construction Materials for April 2026 reached 120.67 units (base year 2021=100), recording an increase of 1.38%, compared to the same month of the previous year, according to data published on Monday, by the Statistical Service. By main commodity category, increases were observed in electromechanical products (2.29%), metallic products (1.81%), products of wood, insulation materials, chemicals and plastics (1.76%), minerals (1.59%) and mineral products (0.06%).

The Index of Consumer Prices recorded an annual and monthly increase in April. According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) rose by 3.0% between April 2025 and April 2026 and increased by 2.2% between March and April 2026. Cyprus registered 33,640 beehives on agricultural holdings in 2023, compared with 38,130 in 2020, according to data published by Eurostat on Wednesday. Cyprus recorded a fiscal surplus of pound 593.4 million in the first four months of 2026, down slightly from a surplus of pound 614.0 million in the corresponding period of 2025, as higher government spending outpaced revenue growth, according to preliminary data released by the Statistical Service on Friday. Cyprus’ Council of Ministers has approved the country’s first National Anti-Fraud Strategy for the Protection of the Financial Interests of the European Union for the 2026-2031 period, together with a five-year Action Plan aimed at strengthening sound financial management, transparency and the protection of EU and public funds. According to a press release issued on Friday by the Treasury of the Republic and Cyprus’ Anti-Fraud Coordination Service (AFCOS), the strategy seeks to establish a unified and coherent national framework for the prevention, detection, investigation, recovery and monitoring of fraud and irregularities affecting the EU’s financial interests.

Shift towards renewables and electricity in Cypriot industry, according to Eurostat

Cyprus recorded total energy consumption of 10,334.447 terajoules (TJ) in the industrial sector in 2024, compared with 9,442.880 TJ in 2014, according to data published by Eurostat on Friday. According to Eurostat, consumption of petroleum products in Cyprus decreased to 3,729 TJ in 2024 from 6,937.236 TJ in 2014. In contrast, an increase was recorded in renewable energy sources and biofuels, which rose to 1,499.608 TJ from 430 TJ, as well as in electricity, which reached 2,227.176 TJ from 1,666.800 TJ. Non-renewable waste also increased, reaching 2,347.187 TJ from 316 TJ, as did solid fossil fuels, which rose to 531.476 TJ from 92.844 TJ.

President Christodoulides to pay official visit to Kazakhstan

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides will pay Kazakhstan an official visit on the 3rd of June, the first official visit of a President of the Republic of Cyprus to the country. According to a written statement by Deputy Government Spokesman, Yiannis Antoniou, President Christodoulides will be accompanied by members of the Council of Ministers and a business delegation.
