UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, will hold on Friday afternoon a second meeting with President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides.
According to CNA sources, Holguin will also meet with Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman on the next day.
Her meetings with the two leaders will be a continuation of the first meetings she had with them the day on Monday, the same sources said.
It is recalled that on Tuesday, Holguin held separate meetings with the two negotiators of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides.
No new meeting with the negotiators has been set, nor did they discuss the possibility of a joint meeting before the new separate meetings with the leaders.
CNA has also learnt that during her meetings with the negotiators, Holguin continued the discussion on the preparation of an informal meeting in late July – early August.
The discussions focus “only on substance” and not on the Confidence Building Measures, according to the same sources.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
In 2025 the Secretary-General hosted two informal meetings on Cyprus, in March in Geneva and in July in New York, while a tripartite meeting with the Cyprus leaders was also held in late September, at the end of the UN General Assembly High Level Week. An informal meeting in broader format that was expected to take place before the end of 2025, is yet to be announced. María Angela Holguín, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is tasked to engage with the parties.
