The importance of parliamentary cooperation between the European Union and the USA was underlined by Yiorgos Karoullas, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, during his address at the 91st Meeting of the Transatlantic Legislators’ Dialogue.
According to a press release issued by the House of Representatives, Karoullas also referred to Cyprus-US relations, expressing satisfaction over their continued strengthening, while highlighting Cyprus’ role as a pillar of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
He noted that the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union is focused on enhancing the Union’s strategic autonomy, competitiveness, security and resilience, while also strengthening its international presence through partnerships such as the transatlantic relationship.
Referring to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, Karoullas said Cyprus is making use of its geographical position and strong relations with neighbouring countries to promote dialogue and regional cooperation.
On the Cyprus issue, Karoullas reiterated the Greek Cypriot side’s commitment to the resumption of meaningful negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive, just and sustainable settlement, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions and the principles and values of the European Union.
He also expressed hope for continued support from the EU and international partners in advancing efforts towards a solution to the Cyprus problem.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
