Jonathan Van Lange’s meteoric rise in West Indies cricket has just hit another gear.
The 19-year-old prodigy, already named in the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) lineup for the 2026 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL), will now make his franchise debut even sooner after being drafted into the Warriors’ squad for the 2026 ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL). Van Lange replaces wicketkeeper/batsman Amir Jangoo, who earned a call-up to the West Indies Test squad, opening the door for the young all-rounder to strut his stuff on home soil from July 23 to August 1, as GAW look to defend their GSL title.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a GSL event just hours after the news broke on Thursday, a visibly pumped Van Lange couldn’t hide his excitement.
‘First, I just want to thank God for allowing me to be selected for GSL. It’s something that I’ve obviously been working towards; getting picked for CPL first up was very exciting for me,’ said the West Indies Under-19 standout. ‘GSL is just another stepping stone in my career, looking to learn both off and on the field from some of the best players in the world. So, it’s pretty exciting for me.’
It has been a dream year for the Guyanese sensation. Earlier in 2026, Van Lange announced himself on the senior stage with a century on his four-day debut for the Guyana Harpy Eagles against the West Indies Academy, before backing it up with a crucial half-century in the West Indies Championships final against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force.
While the runs have flowed, the teenager is far from complacent. He admits that the transition to the highest level requires constant evolution.
‘Yeah, definitely so far it’s been a dream year. I’m just looking to be the best player that I can be, just to keep performing at the highest level,’ Van Lange stated. ‘Off the field, definitely, fitness is something that I wouldn’t say I’m struggling with; I’d say getting better every year. In terms of cricket per se, there are different shot selections that I guess will come over time with experience and facing different bowling attacks at different stages.’
As he braces for his first taste of franchise cricket, the young all-rounder is relishing the prospect of performing in front of the passionate Guyanese faithful and soaking up knowledge from the senior pros in the dressing room.
‘I guess the first thing would be getting acquainted with playing in front of big crowds, especially. We know how the crowds in Guyana get the support we get. So, that’s just a major thing for me to learn from, and again, just learn from the Hetmyers and the Shepherds around the cricket that have been playing and performing at their best at the highest level as well,’ he expressed.
Van Lange is also a talented table tennis player, and with cricket commitments becoming increasingly year-round, he acknowledged that balancing the two sports will now come down to sharp time management.
‘It’s a bit more difficult, as cricket is always now more year-round. The more tournaments you get picked for, the farther away you are from the sport of table tennis. And table tennis is a sport you need to keep practising to become better. So, I wouldn’t say it’s getting more difficult, just that I have to manage my time better,’ he explained.
