The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has uncovered expired and unfit medical laboratory materials during a series of special raids on private hospitals and medical laboratories across the country, raising concerns over compliance with health and consumer protection standards.
The authority said it carried out 52 inspections covering all districts as part of a nationwide enforcement operation aimed at protecting consumer health and safety.
According to the CAA, inspections revealed serious non-compliance at several institutions, including the storage and use of expired laboratory materials alongside items currently in use.
Among the materials found to be unfit for use were blood glucose testing kits, dengue diagnostic test kits, laboratory chemicals, gels used for cardiac patients, dye solutions and other laboratory consumables used in medical examinations.
“The seized materials have been taken into the custody of investigating officers, while further investigations are underway,” the CAA said.
The authority said legal action would be instituted against the relevant institutions under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
It also said similar island wide inspections would continue as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and consumer safety.
