Sri Lanka Men qualify but Women knocked out of Asian Games Rugby Sevens 2026

Sri Lanka’s men’s rugby sevens team has officially qualified for the Rugby Sevens competition at the 20th Asian Games, which will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from 1 to 3 October 2026. Sadly, the women’s team did not secure their berth in the eight-team event.

Sri Lanka’s men are among the 12 nations to secure qualification through the Asia Rugby pathway, joining regional heavyweights Hong Kong China, Japan, China, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, the Philippines, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Qualification is a significant achievement for Sri Lanka as they continue to strengthen their standing in Asian rugby.

However, there was disappointment for the Sri Lanka women’s team, who narrowly missed out on qualification after failing to finish among the top eight teams. The women’s competition will feature Japan, China, Thailand, Hong Kong China, Kazakhstan, India, Singapore and Malaysia.

The Asian Games Rugby Sevens tournament is expected to showcase the continent’s finest teams in one of Asia’s premier multi-sport events.
