NUC approves AI-Integrated postgraduate programmes for American Open University

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of three postgraduate programmes at American Open University Nigeria (A-Global), paving the way for the institution to admit its first cohort of master’s degree students in the 2026/2027 academic session.

The approval, contained in a letter from the Office of the Executive Secretary of the Commission dated June 19, 2026, authorises the university to commence full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Information Technology (MIT), and Master of Public Administration (MPA) programmes.

According to the university, the approval followed a comprehensive resource verification exercise conducted by a panel of experts appointed by the NUC.

The panel assessed the institution’s academic staff, facilities, governance structure, and other human and material resources before recommending the programmes for approval.

Reacting to the development, Founder and President of American Open University, Prof. David S. Akanbi, described the approval as a significant milestone that reflects the institution’s commitment to quality higher education.

He said the approval was the outcome of a rigorous and independent assessment of the university’s faculty, infrastructure, systems, and academic governance, expressing appreciation to the National Universities Commission for its thorough evaluation process and confidence in the institution.

A major feature of the newly approved postgraduate programmes is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the curriculum.

Rather than treating AI as an optional subject, the university said the technology has been embedded into every course to prepare graduates for emerging realities in business, technology, governance, and public administration.

Prof. Akanbi noted that AI is transforming the way organisations make decisions, deliver services, govern institutions, and compete globally, adding that the programmes were specifically designed to equip students with practical knowledge and leadership skills required in an AI-driven world.

Under the approved programmes, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) will offer specialisations in Technology Entrepreneurship, Human Capital Development, and Strategic Educational Design.

The Master of Information Technology (MIT) will feature AI Engineering and Deployment, Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics, and Intelligent Learning Systems, while the Master of Public Administration (MPA) will focus on Digital Governance and Security, Public Health Policy and System Governance, and Strategic Public Sector Leadership.

The university explained that all three programmes are built around its proprietary EDGE Framework-Educate, Develop, Grow and Empower-and will be delivered through a HyFlex learning model that allows students to study fully online, entirely on campus, or through a flexible combination of both modes.

Prof. Akanbi expressed confidence that the programmes would produce graduates capable of leading innovation and transformation across both public and private sectors.

He stated that the university’s vision is to produce global leaders equipped with strategic thinking, technical competence, professional networks, and applied research capabilities to respond effectively to the rapidly changing demands of the global economy.

The institution also announced that applications for admission into the 2026/2027 academic session have commenced, with prospective candidates advised to obtain details on admission requirements, programme structures, and application procedures through the Office of the Registrar.

American Open University, operating under the brand name A-Global, is a private university licensed by the National Universities Commission. With its global campus in Ibadan, Oyo State, the institution says it is committed to expanding access to career-focused higher education by combining academic excellence with industry-relevant learning through its EDGE educational framework.
