NLEX coach Jimmy Alapag on Sunday met San Miguel Beer’s Marcio Lassiter for the first time since the latter broke his record for most career three-pointers in PBA history.
The Road Warriors’ 110-96 win over the Beermen in the PBA Governors’ Cup at Smart Araneta Coliseum allowed Alapag to personally congratulate Lassiter, who set the record on Sept. 15, 2024.
‘Aside from playing a team that has really dominated the PBA for a long time, I was really looking forward to getting a chance to see Marcio,’ Alapag said.
Alapag and Lassiter got their chance before tipoff, with the two even posing for a photo together.
Lassiter has now made 1,397 combined threes and fours, and counting, way ahead of Alapag’s 1,250.
Since the four-pointer was introduced in 2024, PBA record books include the longest arc on the list.
‘I didn’t get a chance to congratulate him personally for being a three-point record holder,’ Alapag said. ‘It’s a testament to him as a player. It’s a testament to his work ethic, his consistency.
‘To be able to congratulate him personally, I was really looking forward to that. He’s absolutely well deserving of it.’
And in solidifying his support, Alapag urged Lassiter to stretch the record to as many as he could.
‘I even told him after the game, keep going,’ he said. ‘Try to stretch that record out so far to where nobody else breaks it.’
