The Fire Service made an appeal to the public in a statement issued on Tuesday to exercise particular caution and to completely avoid any actions or activities that could cause a fire, given that current conditions significantly increase the risk of fires breaking out and spreading.
As stated, anyone who notices smoke, a fire or actions that could potentially cause a fire is asked to immediately notify the Fire Service on 112 or the Department of Forests on 1407, whilst at the same time the public is being urged to report immediately to the relevant authorities any suspicious activity or behaviour that could be linked to the starting of a fire.
It is noted that lighting fires, for any reason, in the countryside and in forests is strictly prohibited, as are actions such as the use of tools or agricultural machinery that produce sparks, heat or flames, such as grinders, oxy-acetylene welding and electric welding, as well as the disposal of lit cigarette ends or the lighting of fires, which can easily cause fires with devastating consequences for the environment, property and human lives.
Cooperation and a sense of responsibility on everyone’s part are essential to prevent such unfortunate events, the statement concludes.
