Ex-Justice Baba Gana Ashigar dies, buried in Maiduguri

A retired judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Justice Baba Gana Ashigar, is dead.

He died in the late hours of Friday, July 25, 2026, in Maiduguri, Borno State, after a brief illness.

The late jurist was laid to rest on Saturday, July 26, 2026, in accordance with Islamic rites.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Information of the Federal High Court, Dr Catherine Oby Christopher, the Court described the late jurist as a distinguished and dedicated judicial officer.

The statement stated that ‘Hon. Justice Baba Gana Ashigar, Rtd, was a distinguished jurist who served with diligence, dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the administration of justice.

‘His substantial contributions to the Bench and the legal profession will be fondly remembered by his colleagues, members of the outer Bar, Court Staff, and all who had the privilege of working with him.

‘The Chief Judge, Judges, Management and Staff of the Federal High Court extended heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, praying that Almighty God grants them the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

‘May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.’
